Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I'd like II applaud the educational efforts of the Liberal MLA IV Calgary-Buffalo, Kent Hehr. He might be wheelchair bound but he has courage & determination. He & I were having a phone chat on how II increase nutrition levels in Calgary-Buffalo school cafeterias & Province wide as a whole. Once we finished our chat he told me he was off to Okotoks II meet with teachers & hear their concerns about where they feel education standards can be improved.

Dear David:

These Surgery 101 Podcasts of the University Of Alberta's Dr. Jonathan White seeem quite smart & erudite. Having frank & open medical discussions in layman's terms are a smart idea. Since the good Dr. is doing all of the editing, he is ensuring quality control & that his students & any listeners are getting the very best of medical information & the very best that medicine has II offer. In this step by step guide format, Dr. White & his medical guests are making the Dr's of the future better now because the chats are done in real time. In this way if an emergency arises & a textbook is unavailable, Dr. White's audio database can be accessed from any computer on Earth.

An interesting start II the federal writ. I am certainly intrigued by Liberal Leader Dr. Mike Ignatieff's educational proposal. Get students interested in one of Edmonton's, or indeed any Daycamp in the Province this summer. Daycamps offer kids a summer retreat where they can burn off extra calories & energy, but still be home at night with their family's. They also offer many field trips & adventures which expand kids minds. Not to mention the great friendships the kids can develop. Plus they are affordable, well supervised, practical, & just filled with constant excitement & adventure which of course can only serve II make their attendees lives better.

Dear David:

As with my first blog today, I must point out again how helpful EPL Staff are in internet issues & searches. There is a Pakistani-Canadian young lady here who along with her mother is quite nervous about how to use the computer as the mother's English is not so good. So I said II the daughter to bring an EPL Staff Member over here & they will help her search Punjabi websites. Everyone should feel comfortable in the library no matter what their first language is & no matter what area they are choosing to study in.

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I find it really amazing just how great the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) Staff here & at other branches are. I am looking up some factoids on United States President's James Madison & James Monroe IV both personal & raw election data. I am having difficulty "negotiating contact" with the appropriate websites & historical patterns that the II men filed as paperwork IV the XVI (16) years they consecutively held the Presidency as IVth & Vth President's from MDCCCIX-MDCCCXXV (1809-1825.)

Not only have the Lois Hole Staff helped me narrow my search patterns down II the documents I needed at the correct sites, one of the lady staffers has found me a book on James Madison as an accompanying educational research tool. Records during those years are not as full as they could be. There is much more information on President Monroe what with the "Monroe Doctrine" being such a great historical document.

March XXVIIth, MMXI

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

When children throw their cafeteria or other related garbage on the ground, or outside on the playgrounds we all lose out. Kids in school need II learn that in order IV the environment II be preserved IV future generations, they need to put their garbage & other waste materials sterictly inII garbage receptacles. If they have a recycleable material such as a carbonated beverage can, they should put it in a recycle bin, or bring it into the school if their are only indoor recycling bins. To make the planet better stuidents, put your waste materials properly away. Also, alert school staff if a garbage receptacle is overflowing so that a fresh bag can be put in place & the garbage hauled away IV safe disposal.

Dear David:

Kids need II learn to keep themselves heart healthy. Heart disease such as coronary blockages, episodes, & full on heart attacks are not limited II old people & those with heart troubles. They can strike even school aged children, anytime & anywhere. Tips to help in this mater include:

I. Look IV healthy lower sodium choices.

II. Choose a salad instead of fries & use a low fat dressing.

III. Portions in restaurants can be made quite large, this is to entice you II eat more & come back again II the restaurant. Just eat what you can so you are not overfilled & take the leftovers home.

IV. Rather than fried meat, choose to eat meat/fish/chicken thats roasted, grilled, boiled, or baked IV a lower overall fat intake.

V. Drink juices, water, or low fat milk rather than say a carbonated soda.

VI. Ask your server II see "Heart-Healthy" menu choices or point out which are the healthiest meals on the menu if there is no indicator.

VII. Order sauces on the side so that you do not consume too much of them on your meal. This can dramatically reduce your overall caloric intake.

Have A Heart,

Edmonton, Alberta
March XXVIth, MMXI

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

In his usual excellent thrice weekly opinion piece, the Edmonton Journal's Graham Thomson writes that we are lucky II live in a democracy. a democracy where we are free II choose our leaders by vote, free from manipulation & discord. As well as free from tyranny & the risk of dying or getting maimed by voting. This is why its so sad that so few Canadians choose II participate, fewer & fewer all the time.

That it why its Graham's belief & mine as well that we need II get folks engaged so that voting levels go up. I feel that democracy delayed is democracy denied. So get out there David, tell all of your colleagues & friend's, starting with Mrs. Principal Janet Hancock to encourage students II follow election issues & general local, provincial, national, as well as world issued to stay informed. Also encourage them to vote once they turn XVIII (18) & have gained the right to do so. The more young people stay electorally engaged when they first vote, the more they'll want to vote all of their lives. Plus they'll then pass that love of democracy down II future generations!

Dear David:

Students need II understand that the now sadly departed Triple Academy Award (TM) Winner & Dame Commander of the British Empire Elizabeth Taylor was a superb human. Sure she had many marriages & made human mistakes like anyone else by stealing other people's spouses. I don't excuse these acts or condone them. The point is Elizabeth was not just a drive by night actress no, she could do what many so called stars of today can't do, & thats ACT.

But she was more than that. No throughout her trial & tribulations with her health, she made time to help the poor & those with the terrible scourge of HIV & those with full blown AIDS. She raised millions for these causes & students must respect this because it shows she had great compassion & refused II judge people with disability's. So get out there students & be like Elizabeth Taylor, live a full life & be the best that you can be.

Dear David:

After LXX (70) plus years of battling, the Women's Suffragette Movement got females the right to vote in MCMX (1910) in Washington State, the Vth State in the Union II allow IV female voting and these suffragettes paved the way IV their Eastern counterparts & the eventual passing of the XIXth (19th) Amendment to pass. This vote in MCMXX (1920) enfranchised women with the right to vote nationally.
David we have to instill in male students that female students & women should always be considered equal. Even up here in Canada women at one point were treated like dirt, at points only considered 3/5th's of a person & treated more like property than human beings. The women (& men) of Washington State elected females to the United States House of Representatives. This politically savvy set of ladies set the stage IV total voting equality by chitchatting their male counterparts IV a decade to influence them on legislative fairness II women.

In representative & parliamentary democracies, we need women to be C% (100%) equal II men. Just because it was men who gave women the right II vote, doesn't make it the right way IV it to have happened. On July IVth, MDCCLXXVI (1776) women should have been given the right to vote on a equal basis with men in the U.S. Constitution. If these same women were good enough to give birth to all of the Fathers of Confederation, then they were good enough II have immediate equal voting rights.

Dear David:

If you ever get a midday break from the Legislature, drive over or hop on the bus/lrt over to the cafeteria & dining area at NAIT. This fine school has definitely brought the fine art of cooking nutritionally & affordably back. Classses are available in several schools Alberta schools in after school cooking. Cooking IIgether & eating as a family unit makes kids more aware of their nutritional needs & more bonded II their family as a unit. This will make them less likely to be dysfunctional upon growing up & thereIV wanting II cook nutritional meals on a regular basis IV when they have family's of their own. As a former NAIT student, I can attest II the extremely high quality of the NAIT cafeteria & dining room food. I have already done so in this blog in previous entries & this is why I still eat at NAIT VI or VII times a year.

The Apple Schools Project under the direction of Marg Schwartz sounds like a wonderful initiative & I support the fact that it is expanding. Getting students of all ages to think about protein, energy, & good fats as opposed to trans fats & fatty foods now will make them more likely to eat healthy as they continue on their life path. That is, both before, during & after their chosen educational experiences, including those at NAIT &/or other post-secondary institution.

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

In these hard economic times, students must be budget concious. Here are some helpful tips:

I. Always make a list of what you need beIV you shop.

II. Walk & bike to & from school & carpool whenever ou can. This will save on gasoline costs. Further II this, always look around IV the best price on gasoline. Ie: How much off per litre, gift card/gift certificate savings.

III. Carry a water bottle of metallic nature with you so you never have to pay IV refills. Plus you can put other beverage types in it IV taste variety & the sealed metal container will keep that beverage fresh no matter what it is.

IV. Use coupons & student discounts when & wherever possible? Ie.: Some movie theatres have student pricing.

V. Look out IV free promotions. Ie.: Tim Horton's gives away free breakfast meals with high protein eggs every VI months.

VI. Cook your own meals, save the leftovers & bring a bag or box lunch II school. Always carry around healthy snacks as well like protein bars.

VII. Make your own coffee & carry it in a thermos/travel mug. World spot market coffee bean prices are rising fast & restaurant served coffee is getting terribly expensive.

Budgetary Restraint,

Want a boarding school where the Hancock kids or any kids IV that matter will be treated with respect & where an Alberta school education is not working out? Sure parents face anxieties about sending their kids II live away from home, but the Brentwood College School off Vancouver Island (in palatial British Columbia) is a place where parents/guardians can send their loved ones. They'll be comforted in the fact that kids will have their talents nurtured & get a leg up on a post-secondary career. Its a Grades IX-XII focused school, so the kids will have roommates of similar thought processess, ages, & ideas IV them II get along with. Kids go II school here on VI day a week basis this is great IV them as it nurtures & hones their academic ability's. What's really great is many of the teachers live on campus with their students nearby, this is excellent as it gives the students adult role model II admire with their parents not being around. These role models will teach them II respect their family's & the great choice they made in sending their kids for a Brentwood education.

Dear David:

I'd like II praise your newly minted Cabinet Colleague, MLA IV Lethbridge West, the Hon. Greg Weadick who as the new Advanced Education & Technology Minister took an excellent question set in the Alberta Legislature Oral Question Period on the need IV Post-Secondary institutions in more rural areas. Yes I totally agree with Greg & the MLA IV Red Deer South, Mr. Cal Dallas about the need IV transparency & live teacher/student in class sessions at a reasonable rate in both urban settuings such as here in Edmonton & say a rural setting of say the farmland surrounding where MLA & the Hon. Ed Stelmach farms, the Premier & Member IV Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville.

Online schools are great, as I of course can totally attest. But even I must confess having II physically get out of bed & learn in a full on classroom environment has no substitute. So of course if I wanted II learn about agricultural sustainability, or say the environment for instance: of course a rural Post-Secondary would be more appropriate IV me or any other prospective student.

Dear David:

When children get injured on the school grounds, or even at home, its important that those injuries are x-rayed, analyzed, & then assessed by a massage or therapy clinic asap. If you need an outstanding clinic that can heal the injuries of our school kids faster & properly, then you could do no worse than to check out Leading Edge Physiotherapy in at the Royal Glenora Club here in Edmonton & the Sturgeon Valley Athletic Club in St. Albert. Thnere are many great physio centres, but this centre is superb at ensuring students of all ages get back inII shape IV their educational needs. A healthy body of course leads to a healthy mind & vice versa.

Dear David:

You've got II like this. People are using the Twitter II commentate on Public School education & education matters in general. This is definitely something I approve of. The more people raise awareness of Public School issues & benefits, as well as problems, the more people will want II enter their kids inII the public setting & help fix the problems. They can do this by paying attention II the welfare of their child(ren) in the school & will thereIV want II make sure that school (& the children that comprise its student body) are successful. Participate in Twestival, its a group & event that raises funds for kids in impoverished neighborhoods that are entering Kindergarten.

Tweet IV Prosperity,

Dear David:

Girl Guides from across the city are getting food IV the Edmonton Food Bank this Saturday. Truly a noble cause II be sure considering how many of our family's and their kids are starving, thus leaving kids malnourished & unable II fully think IV themselves & explore their full brainwave patterns & then garner talents IV use in society from their educational experience. Donations can be dropped off at Rosslyn Community League, Mill Woods Town Centre, Oscar Romero High School, & McClure United Church.

Its not just Guides that are involved, but their affiliated girl troupes of Sparks, Brownies, & Pathfinders. Lets help The Edmonton Food Bank & these lovely & caring young ladies on their quest II put food into the bellies of Edmontonians of all ages. Every person should have the right to a decent meal III x per day, its just better IV society & I am honoured that these girls are taking the initiative to help their fellow students & their family's maintain stronger cohesive bonding units.

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

Very adept manoeuvre by the Federal Member of Parliament IV Edmonton-St. Albert, Mr. Brent Rathgeber, QC. He's has brought forward a Private Member's Bill called Bregg's Law, named after an Edmonton Transit System Driver Tom Bregg who was beaten by a passenger & lost the use of one of his eyes as a result, forcing him to retire prematurely. Transit drivers drive our students, teachers, the elderly, & the infirm around. They also drive on private coach buses from destinations across this great Province & from points II & fro around the world. These fine folks who operate yellow school, transit, lrt, & private buses deserve only the best in protection as they have many charges in their care who ride their buses.

Brent's bill is beyond excellent as an idea. These drivers deserve the best protection from an attack &/or the possibility of an attack. The perpetrators of these vicious crimes deserve II be locked up IV long timeframes or even as "dangeous offenders" to ensure the safety & well being of any other drivers whom they may wish to attack upon their release from incarceration.

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

Excellent idea by the MLA for Edmonton-Calder, Mr. Douglas Elniski. His PC Calder Association is sponsoring a Safe Community Initiatives IV the citizens of Edmonton-Calder & anyone who wants II come IInight at the Calder Seniors Drop-In Centre, 7pm-9pm at 12963-120 Street. I most certainly applaud his initiative & his Board's smartness in setting this event up. We need more Law & Order on the streets & citizens looking out IV one another, in particular those who are disadvantaged such as seniors & the handicapped. The public looking out IV one another, especially the students of Edmonton-Calder & across the Province can only make lives better overall & safer IV the citizenry of this great Province as a whole. Plus he has the esteemed Solicitor General Frank Oberle, Progressive Conservative, Peace River as a special guest, the man in charge of safety IV the Province. An excellent idea.

Dear David:

I see that the XLIVth (44th) President Of The United States, Barack H. Obama (Democrat, Illinois) & his lovely bride, First Lady Michelle Obama (Democrat, Illinois) were leaving a parent/teacher interview at their daughter Sasha's school last week. I am truly glad II see that no matter how busy he is in his dual capacity's as Head Of Government & State, & Military Commander-In-Chief Of United States Armed Forces, the President takes time out II attend these meetings with Mrs. Obama b/c he sees the value in education. This shows that not only is he is a good father in looking after Sasha's needs, he truly cares IV all of America's children & wants II make their educational system better. Whether they attend Private Schools as Sasha & older sister Malia do, Public Schools, Charter Schools, or forms of schooling such as the Homeschool/Correspondence &/or Online School models.

Dear David:

Thanks II you first & foremost IV waving & tacitly acknowledging my presence upon seeing me sitting in the Member's Gallery after Question Period. That shows respect & I appreciate that. Congrats are II be handed out David II the Member IV Leduc-Beaumont-Devon, a Mr. George Rogers. His thoughtful line of questioning on the shortage of school space allotments IV the Town of Beaumont was excellent. As was your response in mentioning that you are leasing space "perhaps not the best space" as you stated, but at least you are trying. Which of course is all you can do in this emergency situation, along with providing "modular" buildings in tandem, I know that the Education Ministry is trying its best to meet the diverse needs of the Beaumont student population & its family's.
