Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA,
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

It was XXIII (23) years ago tonight that we saw a stellar example of leadership in action, a real educational treat. The late & respected Mayor Laurence Decore got us thru one of the worst crisis sitations we ever had. Awake around the clock for days, Laurence coordinated with Heather Airth of Emergency Relief Services an excellent response on July XXXIst, MCMLXXXVII (July 31st, 1987) to the deadly tornado that killed XXVII (27) of our fellow citizens.

The tragedy ripped us apart. But Laurence Decore brought us back. He had ground troops & volunteers working 24/7 to rescue citizens, clean up disaster debris & find food and shelter IV the homeless and displaced. Historical records will show Alberta kids that he kept this City together. The kids of Edmonton need II know our past & how great Laurence Decore was. Then if they decide to run IV Mayor or Council, they can learn from his example.

Enjoy Your Civic Holiday Weekend David,

Rory

Dear David:

An unbelievable level of congratulations must be metred out to Todd Babiak, his wife Gina Loewen & their II little rock stars, daughters Avia & Esme. What the Babiak/Loewen clan have done in taking their daughters II France & through Europe is stellar. Not only are the girls happy, healthy & well adjusted after a year, they are excited about being with Nana & Grandpa and starting new adventures in Canada.

Avia & Esme did a great job in looking out IV their mom & dad in the last year. Becoming bilingual, going II school in France & touring thru France and learning about another culture. There really is no substitute IV it, Its called the education of life. Hopefully the Babiak girls will always treasure this experience.

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

I strongly encourage students of all ages to go to Www.Epl.Ca & look at the Library Guide. Or even pick one up in person. You cannot believe how many fun activity's there are for people here and at all of the other locations. At the Riverbend & Londonderry Branches, they have the excellent organization of Toastmasters holding summer classes IV adults that might not be totally confident in their oratorical ability's.

Not only does Toastmasters give you confidence in being in front of people and making comments in front of them, it allows adults who are comfortable to socialize, network and make friends. These friendships and acquaintances might then be able II help them get ahead socially in the future &/or help them explore & land a great career opportunity/ies that they might not have thought of.

Dear David:

I just received a fascinating tipoff here at Lois Hole Branch EPL. The staffers here recommended that if I wanted to find some books and magazines related to kids issues that I look at garage sales David. I am looking for some historical picture books on trains in regards to the building of Canada's original railway that are no longer in print. One of my nephews is really into train lore, especially Thomas the Tank Engine and such. I have taken him II train museums & Thomas the Tank Engine Kids Shows that are live & interactive in malls.

Now I want to have some real fun and take him into the past. Showing him and my other nephews and cousins how trains are built. Things such as architectural plans & blueprints and schematics. If he understands the technical schematics and the engine parts/components, maybe he will himself become an engineer one day. In his best interest, I am going to hunt down my videotape copy of "The National Dream" by Pierre Berton that was broadcast on CBC Television. I am sure he will be riveted by the tales of the construction & watching the engines chug along. When he is older, I will let him read the original tales of how the railway was built in Mr. Berton's original "The National Dream" & "The Last Spike" books. I bet you he will get the same charge I did in reading them.

July XXIXth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I strongly urge you Janet & the kids to attend the XXVth (35th) annual Heritage Festival in William Hawrelak Park this weekend. It is a multicultural delight what with stage shows & areas for the kids to play and explore such as "kidzworld." Not II mention the culinary & ethnic delights of the food booths from different nations. I will of course being proud of my Dutch heritage and hitting up the Dutch booth, as well as many others.

Yes July XXXIst-August IInd, MMX will be an exciting adventure, just as it has been its previous XXXIV (34) incarnations. The dancing and singing are just stellar. What really is great IV the kids is the ethnic flair. This will truly inspire them II explore other cultures.

Dear David:

I cannot believe that in the great Province of British Columbia that father of III, Kenneth Klassen only got XI (11) years in jail. He had sex with and outright raped at least VIII (8) little girls. Then, he's stupid enough II tape his activity's (& ship them openly to himself) and then thinks because the offences occurred in Cambodia that he was only a sex tourist. So the little girls were just child hookers and he was just a customer. Frankly David, this man should be chemically castrated and be put in lockdown for life as a British Columbia "dangerous offender." I mean what the heck David, its one less criminal on the street. What's even worse, the lady he lived with openly endorsed his activity's by editing his child porn DVD's IV a fee. Thats just nuts!

Sadly,

July XXVIIIth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Sitting here in the Lois Hole EPL Branch I am shocked II discover that again there are no mousepads under the mouse's attached II the mainframe computers. Arguably, having a mousepad under each mouse will teach Alberta students & library patrons in general the value of respect IV EPL property in terms of not scarfing or scratching up the furniture/computer station housed underneath.

The cost of having to repair with a new top &/or refinish/replace each of these workstations can be quite astronomical. I as a furniture contractor/supplier to wholesalers and resalers can get EPL a corporate rate on new or even used desks. But why should EPL have to spend money on new workstations if a simple mousepad at each workstation will prevent them from getting wrecked in the first place? We need to teach common sense and a bulk purchase of say City of Edmonton made or even blank mousepads will save a fortune in the end and allow students to work on the computers with a quiet dignity. Glue them down if you are worried about theft.

Graciously,

Rory

XXVIII (28) Stories II Death

July XXVIIIth, MMX

Dear David:

Truly sad David II hear of the IX (9) year old boy plunging II his death off a XXVIIIth (28th) story balcony apartment ledge in the great City of Calgary. How awful IV his mom that ashe was nearby and stlll couldn't do anything & IV his father arriving home II the tragic scene. No parent should have to face the death of their child, but sadly, it happens each & every day.

Kids have II be taught safety factors when on balcony's David. Things like, do no step on bicyles or skateboards II have a look over the edge. If they want to see a little bit over the railing or barrier, then a parent/guardian should be there to aid & make sure the are safe.

Pray IV This Family David,

Dear David:

You definitely must check out the coverage on this United Church sponsored school in Managua, Nicaragua. The Rodolfo Rodriguez Alvarado Preventitive Centre offers not just a decent education, but nutricious meals and snacks as well. Plus crisis counselling such as how II stay off drugs, sexual disease awareness, first-aid training, crime awareness programs and Bible study tied in with vacation retreats II recharge body, mind, & soul.

The United Church Of Canada has sponsored this school IV many years & offers hope II its students by teaching from a Christian perspective. Dear David:

I was at a dance studio this afternoon in the south side and the kids were learning ballet from a retired Russian ballet dancer. She told me had danced with the Bolshoi in Moscow & St. Petersburg. I was truly impressed at the level of instruction & how none of the kids spoke Russian, but they had memorized her commands. The two boys and six girls are not just learning another language; no they are learning how to be in great shape by the exercise of dance. Which of course is very stimulating IV the mind, body, & soul. I strongly encourage their continued participation in this & other forms of dance!

July XXVIth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

I strongly encourage parents II bring their kids up to age III here on Thursdays during the summer David. At 10:15AM, EPL offeres a singing, signing & learning class. Especially helpful IV kids with learning and auditory disabilities. As well as their parents &/or guardians. If a child cannot communicate orally at all times, then giving them the option of signing their needs, such as in the case with a deaf child or a child who is a low functioning autistic is very smart.

Maybe the kids will be able II speak English & be only unilingual & maybe they will not. My deaf Uncle Gary & his wife Janice taught their kids II sign at a young age. The kids who can both hear normally are 100% bilingual in sign language. So I would encourage all kids and their family's to start out with these courses, with the evntual goal of the kids being able II take more advanced sign language courses at say the Alberta School IV The Deaf or some other facility. Its a handy thing II be able II do.

Signing Off,

July XXVIth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Here at the Woodcroft Branch of the EPL, they have a great section called the teens community. Books on teen issues such as smoking & drug use and how to prevent it. As well as mystery novels like The Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew to develop the thinking skills of the pre-teens, teens, young adults, and the parents of those teens that read the books with their children. Two young men here on the computers next to me are brothers and they love this section as its IV them alone in focus. But they also like the fact that their dad (a single father) reads to them for a half hour every night. Then whats really exciting is the boys bond with their father by taking over the reading on alternating weekends. So this is a family who is not just bonding, but by reading II eachother they are honing their literary skills. As well as diction & overall vocabulary skills.

Of course we know that breathing is the very essential thing needed IV life & NAIT Respiratory Instructor Ian Pappin has done something amazing. He has created an automated test lung. The stronger the tecnology we have IV saving lives, the more lives that will be saved. As a Pre-Technlogy/Pre-Business graduate myself at NAIT, I find people like Mr.Pappin II be an absolute inspiration. He's making the students and the life saving machine the course focus & not himself.

Dear David:

What a truly inspiring man this Edmonton Eskimo, Mr. Graeme Bell is. Here he is minding his own business at a bar just relaxing with friends on May XIIth, MMVII when he was viciously attacked by some ruffians with a baseball bat in the great city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He was hit in the head and had brain and internal neurological injuries. Told he would never fully recover, gain his cognitive function back & even ever play football again, he had surgery & wound up returning to the grid iron just three months later.

He did a lot of reading II be able II gain his cognitive and thinking ability's back. So now that he can think straight again and operate fully as a football player with his athletic prowess back at full strength, he has volunteered himself as an educational promoter IV the Eskimos. Showing students that even he can as a brain injured person can come back stronger than ever will certainly serve the purpose of keeping many Edmontonian students II stay strong in mind by completing their education. Perhaps even going on to technical &/or post-secondary institutions.

Dear David:

I realize that this is more the purvue of the Federal Aboriginal Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl, but according to the Edmonton Sun, aboriginal people will take XXVIII (28) to catch up to the standardized educational systems off reserves. This is not only racist and wrong, its quite frankly inhumane. Your work in the Northland District #LXI (#61) has been excellent, just as an aside.

Please see what you can do in tandem with Chuck and your colleagues across the country who hold aboriginal affairs & educational cabinet slots. These people have been treated disgracefully IV just II long. They are not by any means stupider or less intelligent because they are native. They just need a little extra push so they can given at least an equal opportunity II expand their educational horizons.

The red tape they face from Ottawa and the aboriginal affairs bureacracy is sickening. Scrap the Indian Act. Bring in rules so that aboriginal people's feel they are being treated the same & not like the underclass. Its time IV accountability & aboriginal transparency in learning David. Dear David:

Here in the Abbotsfield Mall EPL Branch, their Summer Reading Club is today and for the II months encouraging patrons to learn World Languages, dialects and cultures. Just sitting here I have run inII a Russian gentleman & his boy, a German lady and several Canadians, including some aboriginal people and their fine family's.

It has been my extreme pleasure to here snippets of German, Russian, Italian, Cree & French. These little bits of dialect should encourage Edmontonian & Albertan students II be bilingual &/or multilingual. I think its absolutely outstanding that the EPL chain is encouraging patrons II share little bits of other languages with eachother, especially with one another's kids. These oral supplementals greatly enhance the language textbooks that are located here in the branch. Right now, I am exploring a Dutch to English text.

There needs to be an increased focus on the needs of Special Education students in this Province David. I see your educational rejigging includes increased support systems, but not increased monetary expenditures. Perhaps cutting back on administration such as paring back the number of trustees in each division, or cutting back in Lorne Parker's & Edgar Schmidt's cash allowances IV staff would free up dollars IV ground troops that could teach &/or mentor kids with Special Needs. Kids such as mentally handicapped kids and low functioning autistics. These kids are not any less important just because they may have a lower intelligencia David. Library Importance

July XXIst, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

The Edmonton Public Library Access II The Internet Use Policy is great. Its fair, everyone gets an hour. So no one is treated differently just because they are rich or poor. But why is it that there are no extra stations set up at the Stanley A. Milner Branch Library? I mean stations with City owned laptops that also have the one hour time limit enforced. These laptops would of course have II be chained down David. But I argue that the EPL and its staffers need II add these laptops badly at the main branch, especially on Sundays when Milner is the only branch open in the city from Victoria Day II Labour Day.

There are summer students and folks of all ages who need year round access and in summers Milner has a huge increase in humanoid levels entering its doors. These folks need library computer time desperately & have II compete with the homeless, intransigents, business owner/operators & downtown residents who arguably occupy the branch more frequently on a year round basis.

Adding laptops would be a lower cost alternative to regular terminals and they can also be programmed so that students and/or EPL users can still print their documents for $0.10 each on library printers and plug in their floppy diskettes, cd & dvd roms, as well as memory sticks IV storage capacity to save their work (that may be partially completed or needing a final edit.) Whether of course their next visit to a EPL Library Branch is II the Milner or a satellite branch on a Monday-Saturday basis.

We must always stress the value of public service II Alberta students. I can think of no better example then Edmonton City Councillor Ron Hayter. XXXIII (33) years on City Council when he stands down in XC (90) days and VI (6) years on the National Parole Board. Plus many years on the Boxing & Baseball Commissions. L (50) plus in all. What a guy, more consecutive days in office then anyone else on City Council, living or dead, even beating out the masters, Terry Cavanaugh & the late Ed Leger.

The way he is leaving is the way he came in. With grace, respect & honour. Never wanted II be Mayor because he knew a Councillor (& Alderman beIV that) still also had 1 of 13 votes. He knew that he could do more then a Mayor by running a great ground game & just focusing on the citizens of Ward 2. Students should definitely look to him as a man of class! I know I do!

Dear David:

Well this sounds exciting. A training session for indigenous youth & their workers is being held in the great city of St. Albert from July XXVIth (26th) to XXXth (30th) at the Nechi Institute. From what I can understand about Nechi, it offers great programs and support networks IV aboriginal peoples.

Not only does it teach kids to be excited about their own historical culture, but how to relate that culture to today's modern times. This of course can help with employment opportunities. It also teaches the kids to be positive and really get to understand their own identity's and that they are unique personages unto themselves.

Dear David:

As I sit here on the computer waiting for my turn as an invited guest today to read a few passages to some kids here at the Lois Hole Library, I am struck at how good these games kids are playing on the internet stations. None of the games outright promote gambling. The young lad and his mom sitting next II me are playing a dice game, which teaches him numbers and basic mathematic algorithms. He is low functioning autistic so being able II stimulate his mind in a II dimensional format with bright colours and graphics is quite stimulating.

The twin sisters playing across from me are playing a game which teaches them how to grow crops. All the way from planting right to harvesting wherein they sell their crops for a profit. Then they can use those profits to start the process over with the next game and grow different crops. Plus they are taught that cows, horses, pigs and other farm animals must be well looked after. So its teaching respect IV life.

This branch tracks by paper and computer how many books each kid has read. But it doesn't degrade kids who may have read less books because there are kids in the club who read longer books or do research as a hobby and look at things like historical puicture books on the founding of Upper & Lower Canada. I certainly encourage the strong continuation of these games II kerep kids minds on an even tempo and instilled with good values.

What an absolutely great idea the University Of Alberta Green & Gold Garden is, located at the South Campus Farm. To have the students raise money IV the prevention of rape & genocide of Rwandan women & children with the profits from the garden's vegetables (which are organic) is very smart. Plus quite frankly, its the humanitarian thing II do.

Personally, I cannot think of a more noble cause then students, teachers, and general volunteers working hard to not just provide healthy nutrition IV people here;but divesting their profits to get food inII the bellies in Rwanda who have the toughest of lives. Having II live day II day with the fear of hunger, rape, torture & even death. I applaud the efforts of Sarah Bowen the garden's creator and her great spirit in raising these funds.

Rory

I am amazed at the stellar basketball record of Dale-Marie Cumberbatch. Dear David:

Yes there is a dire shortage of daycare spaces in smaller urban & rural centres David. But Yvonne Fritz's call II shut the Stony Plain Daycare was 100% right effective July XXIVth (24th.) Its my personal belief that if even one kid in daycare is being affected negatively, then that can have a negative effect on every other kid in their charge. Not II mention the many parents & guardians & extended family members who might have concerns.

It might make sense David IV your colleague Yvonne at Children's Services bring in say non based, grandparent guardians act as volunteer dayhome overseers. Just feed them a hot meal IV their time. Since seniors are retired, this activity will make them feel useful again. They can offer up suggestions and track daily activity's. Making sure that the kids are being fed, loved & nurtured properly by the adult providers. Once the problems are ironed out, they can then be sent inII other daycares.

I cannot think of a finer tandem David. Students helping family's in trouble. Dear David:

The Fraser Institute's stating why do we not have universal rules about feeding and clothing kids when we fully fund education. The argument by its representative, Mr. Peter Cowley is stupid and arrogant. We do not have rules about feeding kids b/c different kids like different things. And there of course students with certain allergens to different food types. So not all foods can be doled out in the same fashion to every child.

We need universal funding IV education II give each kid at every socioeconomic level a chance at going onto to trade, college or perhaps even university. Just go into any Edmonton school cafeteria. There are different menus every day. Foods for kids with allergy's and even days when special ethnic menus with safe food items are served to kids. Ie: Kosher food IV Jewish students and those who want II try these delicacies.

I was in the NAIT cafeteria in March and there were some junior high school kids walking through. They were touring some of the trades programs and were checking II see if there was any Ukranian food on the menu as their friend who was sick was Ukranian & they wanted II try what he liked. I pointed out to their adult guardian & tour guide the perogies, cabbage rolls and goulash. As a NAIT Alumni I know good cooking when I see it. And kids of all ages need II be fed different foods not just IV nutritional needs, but II give them a taste and understanding of other ethnic foods and groups & how they eat, are nurtured and grow.

Alberta students should be inspired by what is going on in the sovereign State of North Carolina. Mrs. Nancy Murray is respectful of people's ideas and makes sure that the renos are performed II exacting standards. Thus the Builders of Hope NC began. Some of the folks getting a new home had to live in crappy, run down trailers or apartments. Now they have yards in which they can relax in and raise family's. Let me be unequivocable, I do fully endorse gay marriages in both civil ceremony's & in church denominations (ie.: The United Church of Canada) that will accept them. What Murray Glen Smith did if not "rape" is definitely "sexual assault." Just because the student is XXIII (23) & of legal consenting age doesn't give Mr. Smith the right to "bugger" him or "sexually stimulate" him in any way. What Mr. Smith did was break a relationship of trust between teacher and student. He should have woken up the student and given him the choice II participate. Or, he could have arranged IV the student II be moved II an adjacent room or moved II alternate accomodations himself. Its a hard lesson to learn for both Mr. Smith, but especially IV his victim. Dear David:

Not many people remember this now, but President Lyndon B. Johnson, Democrat-Texas was by trade a teacher. He taught folks a lot of good things in his Presidency, such as how II take over as XXXVIth (36th) President when XXXVth President John F. Kennedy, Democrat-Massachusetts was killed. He also fought hard for and got the Civil Rights Act of MCMLXIV (1964) act passed. Not to mention the Voting Rights Act of MCMLXV (1965.) The late President should be respected for these successes.

In March MMVII, President George W. Bush, Republican-Texas signed the Legislation into law and officially on September XVIIth, MMVII the Education Department building was renamed IV the late President. Out of respect IV his teaching credentials. The Johnson family was of course very greatful to President Bush a Republican from Texas. Especially as their father was a Democrat from Texas.

Of corse David student need to be aware that President Johnson did a lot of good. But his handling of the Vietnam War and Asian combat theatres was appalling. Particularly when he creates a fake attack on Americans in the Gulf of Tonkin when no Americans were killed and then arbitrarily extends out tours IV soldiers when he runs short of troops. Thus causing thousands of them to die. Teach David that war is terrible and we should only resort to it in emergency's.

Recently, some Tennessee students were given XII (12) free books apiece, their choice as II the topics they chose. Although an American founding father, Thomas Paine believed in dignity, forbearance and a decent life for every American. These are quality's that every student should be taught and the only way II do this is to read the lines in an oral format II the students live. Dear David:

Just like the problems you had in Northland District LXI (#61), there seems to be a terrible oversight problem in Washington, D.C. Public Schools and an increase in demand by parents/guardians for Charter Schools (which have higher test scores) II really motivate kids in the District of Columbia. Its very weird, the worse a school is down there, the more of a subsidy its gets from the XLIVth (44th) President, Barack Hussein Obama (Democrat-Illinois) and his Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan (Democrat-Illinois.)

I think Secretary Duncan should demand greater accountability since he is shelling out $17,000.00 of federal funds IV each kid, each year with very poor results. Washington is a federal District so its the Secretary that controls its cash flow, and not the sovereign States of Maryland and Virginia.

There needs II be an increased awareness of pool safety by students and their parents. There has been a staggering increase in the number of people drowning in pools across the nation this year. This is why we need II emphasize to Alberta parents II try and never have their kids more than "an arms length" away as much as possible. Dear David:

I cannot understand why the neighbours of Kristjan Bullock would object II him keeping a small beehive around. Alberta students must know the value of bees to nature in keeping things pollinated. Pollination is key in sustaining life and starting afresh again. Not to mention the billions of dollars of economic spinoffs the bee products made bring to our forestry and agriculture sectors.

There has been a worldwide drop of 40% (and greater in some areas) of bees. I would think a young man trying to bring them back and "be"e one with nature would be considered a positive environmental development. In my mind what Kristjan is doing makes remarkable sense. He could (if allowed) give guided tours of his hive which would encourage students to become bee farmers &/or involved in the agricultural sector themselves. A truly noble trade.

Dear David:

Here's a positive development at the University Of Alberta. The Bookstore Espresso Press machine. I cannot express how important the written word is, even in ths age of raw data and computerization, books & other written forms are clearly more superior. Giving publishers a chance II publish their own works at a cheaper rate can do nothing but instill confidence in them, as well giving them a shot at reaching a wider audience. Whats sad is the Orange Alumni Magazine is going strictly online. I would argue there are many alumni who would say print the magazine for them on the press and save money. Certainly the school would reach a smaller audience, but the alumni would be proud to have a document printed on school machines. Plus not all alumni are computer literate.
