Alarmed At Assinine Attitudes At Telus

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

To me it doesn't seem logical David. I am sitting here waiting to head over II a meeting with a north side City Council candidate & this young man from Grade VI is working on his Social Studies report with his mother. The computer terminals are all full & so they are using the older, manual White Pages in a paper format to look up addresses for a couple of folks who were giving the boy source material.

I asked the woman what her frustration was. She said that she & her son are upset there are no postal codes in the back of the paper copies here at Woodcroft Westmount EPL Branch. I told her I agreed & that IV less computer literate persons that this was a complete abomination. Of course I am going II step aside from my terminal in about XII (12) minutes to allow this mother & son to get complete address information for their sources at Www.WhitePages.Ca. Its annoying II be yet again inconvenienced, but nonetheless I am willing to do so II help a student learn. Telus should bring back the postal codes. Its called service!

Aggravated,

Rory

Dear David:

When children are playing computer games here at the library, they need to put their headphones on so that any noise associated game comes from the terminal & is not broadcast throughout the library. A teenage girl is fighting right now with the branch staff. She needs to listen & wear the headphones and play her game quietly. Quiet, exciting mental stimulation IV her own pleasure & not being men & disrespectful II other patrons & library staff.

Dear David:

I strongly encourage people II take part in the process of reading. "The Flat Stanley Project" to help kids with parents overseas keep up on their reading skills is important. We need to ensure that the youngsters of our armed forces personnel who are missing a parent &/or relative are being raised right & being allowed II develop proper cognitive function. Children are encouraged to colour & write about "Flat Stanley" as his character was flattened by a mailbox. So he travels through the mail.

Kids then write about "Flat Stanley" & colour pictures of him to send with their departing family member, or mail to that armed forces member already serving in either a peacekeeping, diplomatic, &/or combat theatre of operation. Participate & send books to armed forces youngsters & the same books to the serving members. In this way, they can take time to read & learn from eachother through internet conversations. This is great as it gives them back some parent/child time that they lose by the forced (although necessary IV our National Security) seperation.

A fascinating piece in the Edmonton Journal on health today. Wherein kids do not have a shut off switch to tell them when to stop eating. Buy a "Find Your Fun Card" here at the EPL or thru Www.FindYourFun.Ca. A single pass for a student is just $39.00 & a family pass is just $99.00. A truly economical way IV a family to enjoy time together with eachother &/or their friends. Students then learn the basic premisis, of love, friendship, respect, as well as honour. I think The City Of Edmonton is absolutely right to highlight these great packages & the fun is: they are good IV all City facility's. So kids and their family's can constantly enjoy meeting new people & having new experiences each & every time they enter a facility. Not just a facility for fun, play, & exercise. No: also a facility IV bonding & learning about respect & things such as water & aquamarine safety. Plus kids can pick up role models in their guardians & outside role models such as lifeguards!

Well David, while she is studying some courses by correspondence through the Alberta Distance Learning Centre II make her life better by finishing her High School Diploma as an adult; she has no worries here as her two boys are off enjoying themselves in the child's study area. The self-checkout customer hold area here at the this branch & at every EPL branch is stellar. What a great invention from out friends in Deutschland. This German company has built a two-wheel, all wooden bicycle with no pedals and safe rubber tires. That way, kids pedal by balancing exclusively with their legs. They then learn how II properly balance and do have II suffer the stigma of using a tricycle. Its affordable, durable & comes ready to go, or disassembled from Germany directly so that family's that may be on the move can assemble it on their own schedule. Vending, Spending, Earning, Learning

September XXIIIrd, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

What a great idea this vending machine at Century Park LRT Station is. EPL is quite frankly very smart at putting this machine there. There are kids & students of all ages who are on the go, 24/7 around the clock who do not have the time II physically enter a library branch & enjoy the library experience. This vending machine lets them extend that experience out II their own above &/or alternate study locale.

There are of course students with learning disability's/auditory dysfunctions who are afraid II enter a library branch &/or be around II many people. This vending machine will let them take out & return materials at their own leisurely pace. Thus of course gradually socializing them & making them want II try out actually library branch locations when they have some free time. This of course can only be great news IV the library & for the citizens of Edmonton proper overall, as we'll have a more educated & more learned population across all city sector grids. This will of then result in way more community-minded & socially aware members of the citizenry!

Bravo EPL,

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

What happened II the NorQuest College students who were promised (& won openly) the grant money IV educational purposes & living expenses is quite appalling. Hell, its actually disgusting. These people who are obviously at the end of their rope & are trying II improve their lives by getting a decent quality of education should not have II rely on cheques.

You'd think in this society, your colleague Minister Tommy Lukaszuk over at Employment & Immigration would help these disadvantaged, yet superb Albertans set up automatic bank accounts and establish a credit rating. This would eliminate any need IV manual paper cheques II be mailed out. It would also save Tommy a fortune in postage costs, and I know Finance Minister Theodore (Teddy) Morton is looking IV ways II save on administrative costs.

I am clearly not saying racism is involved here. But a lot of these students are of aboriginal &/or other minority status. If they have earned the money & have been legally promised it in writing from governments &/or private corporations, then the payments should be on time, every time each month, no excuses, no second chances! In fact, the payments should be autodeposited at least one day earlier each month to allow the students to properly line up their monthly bill payments & then set up expense charts that outline the needs of themselves IV their education. Not to mention the needs of any family members such as dependent children who are relying on them.

Dear David:

I announced unofficially on my website in May that I was a Ward A Edmonton Public School Trustee Candidate & officially less than two days after Mrs. Cheryl Johner. And more than what two months before my other opponent, Mr. Kevan Warner. Now while I agree Responsive Trustee is a great group on a lot of things in educational terms, they couldn't be any more biased and into manipulating the elections then if they actually were openly, rather then tacitly doing so.

I gave Responsive Trustee Head, Mr. Dale Hudjik six voicemails where I left him my phone number. As well as over fifty of my blog entries and thirty email entries which all include my home phone number. He says he couldn't contact me as I never left him my number. This is of course total bunk as he just didn't want to put my name up there. He put Mr. Warner's name up in July when he announced. I gave Dale Hudjik three email press releases and he couldn't put me up as a candidate until Writ Drop Day this past Monday at City Hall. This proves Responsive Trustee only puts up the names of candidates it wants to, not every name as it should so the public is properly informed as to whom is running.

Dear David:

A great column in the Edmonton Journal this week on lockers. The more things change, the more they say the same. When I was a proud student at Edmonton Christian High School from 1989-92, I had pictures of Sir John A. Macdonald & my dad in my locker. Two of my greatest heroes. As we had wooden lockers, I also screwed in a shelf of my own with a drill borrowed from (& returned to) Industrial Arts where I could stick my candy bars and other snacks. Kids from every generation "personalize" their lockers and thats a good thing.

Dear David:

I applaud the verdict of the Morinville jurors in the Michael Dubas case. Here is a man who was quite literally destroyed for the sake of a prank. He'll probably never teach again & if he does he'll always be seen in a darker light. Despite the fact that what was done to him was a total hatchet job. I hope those kids go to jail IV their actions. We need quality educators like Mr. Dubas, now many will quit in frustration at seeing what he went through. While sexual misconduct is a serious allegation, Mr. Dubas was found "guilty" in the public eye beIV he was found "not guilty" in court.

I applaud the efforts of Principal Phyllis Cardinal at the Enoch Reserve School to make kids lives better & increase their educational opportunities. The Kitaskinaw School seems quite improved under her direction & stable hand. But the Enoch Cree Nation needs to no just give Casino money to the school, but also a portion of its hotel & its entertaiment room profits. These First Nation's kids deserve a lot better.

Dear David:

I agree in certain circumstances, gambling is an evil addiction like alcohol, drugs, & tobacco. But IV the chief Archbishop in Edmonton II ban the use of bingo fundraising revenue IV the good of Edmonton Catholic students is quite frankly an affront to democracy. I seem to remember Captain Father John Patrick Francis Mulcahy of the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M*A*S*H?) 4077th in the 1950's Korean battlefield running Catholic endorsed bingos with 100% of the profits going to the Korean family's and orphans who were sick, injured, & displaced by the horrible realty of what is both stupid & retarded, war. If Father Mulcahy & the Catholic Church knew the gambling profits were going to help kids, just as they are now in Edmonton Catholic Schools towards general revenues, they would want to expand gambling revenues and opportunities. Not retract them as the Archbishop has done.

Dear David:

Looking at the Edmonton Journal the last few days, I can see the band councils IV native bands are not really contributing to the proper education of aboriginal kids. You need a proper aboriginal overseer who can get increased tax revenue from the Federal Government & Indian Affairs Departments IV tax revenue & health & overall educational revenue.

You need some1 who can manipulate the system & really work hard for the kids. Might I suggest Dennis Anderson, a stellar arm twister from the Ralph Klein years in his cabinet. Or perhaps a native person such as the lovely Colleen Klein or the extremely adept former cabinet Minister Mike Cardinal. These folks have the networks & groups that can make sure any extra monies IV the kids and the reserve schools is spent appropriately & not wasted by the bands & their unethical portions of their administrative wings.

Dear David:

Of course its respectful IV students of all ages to be sensitive with their noise levels in library's. Especially in consideration of those who are older &/or who have auditory difficulties. I IV one agree with folks who tell kids to keep their voice at a moderate level (as it states on the sign here in this EPL branch & at every branch.)

Seniors & hearing disabled folks should learn though that they have to give kids some leeway though. Kids yell & scream a tad, and shout out when they are excited. This is only natural & it gives them the extra feeling of excitement of discoverinfg anew. I ask those older students with noise complaints II gently tell the library staff &/or the students themselves. In this way, the problem can be corrected immediately & a more peaceful & tranqiuil library will remain.

There was a youth group here today & a senior complained. It got really nasty in tone but all sides calmed down after the library staff settled things.

Graciously,

Dear David:

I ran inII some students here today at Jasper Place Branch EPL they were talking about how a teacher had taken them to a curling club last week. I guess it was IV their their Physical Education Credit component. Two of the young lady's said that the teacher & his aide knew that one of the children had diabetes but did not remind the child to bring along his insulin supply, or at least some sugary snacks or an epinephrine/adrenaline booster shot. This child had been in the school for IV years already & had the same teacher for some classes last year as he was in a split grade.

The teacher had the student on field trips beIV & I realize that no 1 is perfect, but really that does not excuse her & the aide IV forgetting. Arguably the child has some responsibility but with diabetes arguably doesn't have as strong as cognizant ability as he should. So there needs I argue to be an increased level of command responsibility on behalf of teachers/administrators & other adults in this situation & other similar ones. I argue vociferously that the teacher should have been much better prepared IV this contingency. Luckily I have been informed the diabetic boy had no attack at the curling facility.

Dear David:

Students here at this Kensington Branch have their own corner where it states "Swing Into School." I guess this sign is up at all branches in the EPL chain now & the librarians here tell me that it makes kids who are extra nervous about academic studies & those who are new students much less apprehensive about a school situation knowing they have a safe backup place to go such as their local branch library. Especially helpful if they want a little bit of a quieter area II go with less kids around & thus less of a chance IV them II break their study concentration.

While the Edmonton Eskimos & their President Rick Lelacheur may think they have the right man in their new General Manager, Eric Tillman, I believe what he did was abhorrent. However incapacitated he was, Mr. Tillman is not an acceptable choice. It doesn't matter if he proved successfully (& he did) that he had diminished capacity in a Saskatchewan Court of Law. The point is he inappropriately made sexual advances against an under aged teenage babysitter. However terrible the Edmonton Eskimos are, they are not setting a good example as a Community Football Operation by hiring an admitted sexual deviant.

Who is to say that GM Tillman might not try & harm or advance upon another female student or students? Do you folks ever get the feeling that besides Coach Richie Hall & the entire offensive line, the Edmonton Eskimos should first & foremost fire Rick LeLacheur?

Watercolours located here in this branch & all through the EPL Branch chain by local artisans make them only better David. They show (along with the local art in schools by artists, theit teachers, & the students themselves) that we can create an artistic wonderment of excitement in Edmonton. Maybe not on the same line as say the Guggenheim in New York City, New York or the Louvre in Paris, France. Not any better or worse, just a totally unique Edmonton stamp. I agree with Councillors Leibovici & Henderson. For female students II feel empowered and want to run IV a greater portion of public offices when they older, they need to feel empowered. Women are half the population (actually slightly over that benchmark) & so should hold half of the elected positions on Earth. Dear David:

An interesting case on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) News: "The National With Peter Mansbridge" last night. In Toronto an all black or African-Canadian school is now in its second year of operation. While I support minority & ethnic rights, I do not feel comfortable starting a reverse of the United States desegregation of schools. African-Canadians want tolerance & undertanding, but here the school board screwed up. XXXIVth (34th) United States President Harry S. Truman, XXXVth (35th) US President John F. Kennedy, & XXXVIth (36th) US President Lyndon B. Johnson (a teacher by trade) all signed Executive Orders desegregating schools & Johnson brought in the Civil Rights Act that Kennedy was assassinated over making African-Americans equal.

In a time when we are supposed to be going forward with racial equality & desegregation & the stopping of bigotry, why are we letting minority groups introduce these racist policy's to favour the African Canadian race over any other skin tone? Its not the MCMXL's (1940's), MCML's (1950's), or MCMLX's (1960's) anymore!

Many of the computer consoles let you use headphones in library's. But not all of them. Folks are encouraged to bring in their own. But I have just had III students here in this branch they find it gross that there are no cleaners or disposable earpieces IV the library branch headphones themselves. So I am assuming they of course mean the felt covers which sit over top of the plastic earpieces themselves.

This idea has a lot of merit IV students & library patrons in general as there can be germ II germ transfer from ear to ear of wax & other foreign substances from user II user. Especially if they do not wash &/or sanitize their hands with branch sanitizer & also if they do not wipe the perspiration off of the earpieces of the headphones after they turn them back inII the library checkout counter upon their exit.
