An Illegal U-Turn

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin., #203, 8912-156 Street, Edmonton, Alberta T5R 5Z2

October XXXIst, MMXII

Hon. Jeff Johnson, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Athabasca-Sturgeon-RedH2O

Dear Jeff:

I cannot believe that con artists like multi-billionaire Daryl Katz, the Edmonton Oilers owner are trying to fleece taxpayers out of mega bucks & openly buy provincial election writs. I mean Jeff if I am going to buy an election, I am going to have my friends write seperate cheques. Its pure amateur hour at the Alberta legislature these days.

Meanwhile, post-secondary students who are trying II get ahead honestly with their academic endeavours/pursuits are going II be asked to shell out $30.00 more a year up to $170.00 a semester, IV a transit U-Pass. With tight student budgets, this doesn't seem quite fair.

I Am Not Pleased,

Progressive Conservative, Athabasca-Sturgeon-RedH2O

Dear Jeff:

As the Edmonton Eskimos Football Club ends the season with its regular season with its last game of that regular seaon, they & Canadian Tire Incorporated deserve a lot of credit. Canadian Tire buys XXV (25) tickets a game so that disadvantaged youth (including students of lesser means) can attend Commonwealth Stadium & enjoy some good ol' grid iron Canadian Football League (CFL) action. This is certainly a great idea, getting students excited by football young will make them fans IV life. It will also encourage them to stay healthy & take part in athletics programs at their schools.

Dear Jeff;

I never thought I would like this film "Pitch Perfect" as its skewed towards a more teen-twentysomething audience. It has a very high quality young cast who practiced each & every song many times before, during, & after filming each musical sequence. Musical students & teachers will appreciate this film as it portrays collegiate singing in an "a cappella", which means singing in "the manner of the church/chapel" & w/o any instrumental accompaniment. In other words, singing with just their voices, either solo, or as part of a group. This little film has the song stylings of the day, & also different styles such as jazz, pop, rock, rap, & great dance moves to boot.

Hon. Jeff Johnson, MLA
Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Athabasca-Sturgeon-RedH2O

Dear Jeff:

Meterological students need II be made aware of the potential for a tsunami, or tidal wave affect each & every time there is a coastal earthquake. This is especially true since a VII.VII (7.7) earthquake on the Richter Scale just hit the beautiful British Columbia Queen Charlotte Islands coastline. These warnings were later downgraded II "less likely to happen" once the earthquake aftershocks were finished. Its good IV students to be on alert here b/c they will be the ones issuing the warnings of any future weather events once they get jobs with Environment Canada & other meterological services/service based company's.

Hon. Jeff Johnson, MLA

Dear Jeff:

Let me begin by saying that I am impressed with the way that you have handled this minivan school crash situation in St. Paul as Education Minister. Its been thoughtful, strong, & very dignified. That being said, society says we should not blame the man who was driving because he has a metal plate in his head & suffers seizures. He suffers seizures, not only do I blame this retard IV not having the sense to send his own children to school in buses, car pools, or taxis; I blame the god damn judicial system IV ever letting him back on the open road! So he took a beating & I feel sorry IV him on that point.

Those III (3) poor girls didn't asked to be injured for shit sake! I am livid, that young sweetheart who died at age XI (11) & was just in Grade VI (6) didn't asked to be snuffed out! What the hell Jeff, what the hell? I cannot help but feel absolute sadness IV the family's who chil.dren's lives are ever affected & hatred IV their killer, however unintentional his actions were. He will now be in hospitals &/or jails for many years to come b/c of his stupidity. Plus, he will now be depriving his own kids, students he had just dropped off at school of a father.

If there is I can do to help you or Her Majesty's Education Department on this matter on a volunter basis please let me know! Stay strong IV those family's!

Prayers,

Rory

Hon. Jeff Johnson, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Athabasca-Sturgeon-RedH2O

Dear Jeff:

So the "WE Day" youth conference initiative was held yesterday in palatial Calgary at the Calgary Saddledome. From friends who were there, many talented & positive speakers/role models came to speak at the event. Quality people like luminary & broadcasting legend Larry King. I had friends who even got to meet, chat, & have their picture with Larry. Its great to see the "King Of Talk" being ever so gracious & positive in his message towards youth, especially as he is an octogenarian.

WE Day inspires elementary & secondary students to make the world a better place for us all. Not just us now, but IV future generations as well. This greatly impresses me as these youth have the energy & enthusiasm that is not as strong in older generations. Students bring fresh ideas, & thereIV fresh perspectives & the entire WE Day conference is to be truly admired as its a format that makes the students want II get II work right away. Pay special attention II the amazing "Free The Children" intiative on this amazing webpage!

October XXIVth, MMXII

Hon. Jeff Johnson, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative-Athabasca-Sturgeon-RedH2O

Dear Jeff:

Some schools have compulsory uniforms IV their students. Whether a private, public, charter, or some other school the uniform crosses all boundaries. Rather than be upset at having to wear them, students should excited as uniforms encourage them to be happy about their particular school, & their learning environment as well. This of course can only be conducive to better cognitive functions in their brains & the fact they will take in more of their courses. Plus they'll be happy II be learning in a team environment.

Its also encouraging Jeff that the students get excellent quality IV their money when their family's fork over the money IV their uniform needs. Those students of less fortunate means should also not be made fun of if they cannot afford the entire uniform fee, but instead go to their school administration to see about payment plans & discounts.

A really high quality firm that sells all manner of uniforms is "The Children's Place" out of Secaucus, New Jersey, USA. They a reputation IV fair pricing, excellent quality, & folks can get Air Miles (TM) on every purchase, which they can in turn donate to their school's Air Miles (TM) account. I strongly suggest folks check out their amazing website!

Dear Jeff:

If you were say a school psychologist, the following might be topics you'd want II be kept up on so as to ensure the best education IV students as possible (listed alphabetically):

A. Academic achievement.
A2. Aspergers syndrome.
B. Behavior.
B2. Bipolar disorder.
C. Celiac disease.
C2. Conflict resolution.

This list can go on & on. Plus, it goes all the way from A-Z. So the best thing to do is be aware that students will need helpn psychologically at different junctures in their educational lives. As the professional, you just have to be prepared to react appropriately as needs arise.

Dear Jeff:

Last week Tueday from Long Island, New York, Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Republican & United States President Barack Obama, an Illinois Democrat held their IInd debate. It was done in a town hall or "in the round" style where questions could be asked & is also a style that is more freewheeling.

65 million plus viewers watched it in the United States alone. I am sure that among the many viewers were political science & history students across Alberta in post-secondary schools. Not to mention the social studies students in elementary, junior high, & high school who are watching the debates to understand how politics work. Its great to see the issues of the day talked about in real time on a stage. These debates let voters decide who is the best candidate for the toughest political office on the planet. They also get future voters excited about voting when they reach voting age. As well as maybe thinking of running IV political office themselves &/or helping on other campaigns.

Dear Jeff:

"Here Comes The Boom" is an inspiring movie just released in theatres yesterday. In the film, Kevin James plays a biology teacher named Scott Voss who will stop at nothing to help his school (which is facing huge deficit problems) from keeping its extracurricular activities. He is great friends with the school's music teacher played by Henry Winkler & doesn't want him to lose his job. So he winds up fighting in mixed martial arts contests, all the way the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the professional league for martial arts specialists. Talk about literally going "to the mat" for the kids.

He is helped by trainers & boxers, as well as a great supporting cast including Winkler, who sees his fellow teacher as a hero that is trying to inspire, rather gain any glory for himself. Salma Hayek is fantastic as the school nurse/romantic interest who helps James recover from his injuries. The actors playing the students are also great because they encourage their teacher & tell him how much they respect him IV trying to save their school's programs.

There are also great subplots with James's character teaching people in a citizenship class, as well as his trainers teaching him how to fight. His students also teach James's trainer some of the citizenship course content as a thank you to him for helping their teacher stay in shape. So everyone learns from eachother.

Quality,

Hon. Jeff Johnson, MLA

Dear Jeff:

The benefits to students in drinking chai tea are enormous.

A. It has much less caffeine than coffee, and also provides more relaxed and better cognition. As a result of this it can calm the minds of students under mental stress. Eg.: Students studying and taking exams, or getting together a group project thats really tough.

B. The cinnamon in the tea increases vitality and overall awareness, thereby knocking back a student's fatigue factor by quite a bit.

C. Cardamom puts the student drinker in a relaxed mood and gets the heart, lungs, and kidneys pumping and operating at a normal rate.

D. The cloves in chai tea help with arthritis and other joint pains. This can be especially great if a student's hands are sore after writing, or other joints are sore after school physical activities.

E. Black pepper in the tea can help students regain better metabolism, not to mention ward off colds and flu-like symptoms, and make active colds go away much quicker.

There are many other benefits to this lovely beverage IV students & people on the whole. Consult with your medical practioner, and check with your friends who also have children to see how chai tea has benefits their family's.

Dear Jeff:

The Monopoly Sweepstakes Contest is now on until November IIIrd at participating McDonald's (TM) Restaurants. The object of the game is II win as much territory as possible as well as make as much money as possible on your real estate with which II knock out your competitors. Students interested in getting inII the real estate market can learn valuable lessons in this game, as well as with the online & classic board game versions. The game will get them excited about the real estate market.

Upon receiving their realtor licenses/accreditations, these new real estate agents must do the best that they can IV their clients. Whether they be rich or poor, or somewhere in between, every person has the right II a decent place II call home. Its just called human dignity, decency, & respect. Giving people normalcy in their lives will help these new student realtors to get their name established in the feeding frenzy that is real estate.

Plus, these realtors can help volunteer their time & resources to getting say homeless shelters built so that folks of a lesser means can be safe in their shelter/home (especially important with the Dominion Of Canada's bitter winters.) Also, take lessons from realtors who have been in the market a few years. These older realtors survive in the real estate game as they know what they are doing. They have established sound working/personal relationships &/or bonds with their client base!

Dear Jeff:

Now that about to be ex-Principal Ron Bradley of Ross Sheppard High School has been given an administrative post & a huge raise for firing (knifing) Lynden Dorval, the former physics teacher, a few points must be made.

A. The board could have kept Mr. Dorval in place at his job at Shep b/c with Prin. Bradley gone, the two of them would no longer be fighting.

B. Prin. Bradley obviously knew in advance that the Edmonton Public School Board would give him this huge payoff in doing their dirty work for them. So why didn't the board just let him leave on August XXXIst quietly & have him start his new position September Ist. In this way, there would have been no need to have the hearing & subsequent notice of Mr. Dorval's firing.

C. Maybe Mr. Dorval, the board, & even Prin. Bradley are all a little bit at fault here, but Mr. Dorval could have stayed & w/o his enemy there to spite him, the discipline & administrative issues could have been solved quietly by Mr. Dorval & Prin. Bradley's successor.

Canadian Versus American Thanksgiving

Hon. Jeff Johnson, MLA

Progressive Conservative, Athabasca-Sturgeon-RedH2O

Dear Jeff:

Here are some interesting factoids regarding Thanksgiving. Students may want to research history to learn more.

A. Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated each year on the second Monday in October, this is because we are further north than the United States, as a result our winters generally come earlier & can be quite a bit colder.

B. When Canadian Thanksgiving was initially held in November, it was held the same week as Rememberance Day on November XIth. Coincidentally, my birthday as well, don't forget my present Jeff. When Rememberance Day was a Monday in the calendar, this would force it to be on the same day as Canadian Thanksgiving. As a result, the government of the day in Ottawa moved the holiday to the second Monday in October so their would be II unique & distinct holidays (as there should be.)

C. Most National Football League (NFL) games are held on American Thanksgiving, which is the IIIrd Thursday in November. This is because many people have that Thursday off, however traditionally, NFL games are mostly held on Sunday. Although sometimes they are held on Thursdays during the regular NFL season. There is also Saturday night NFL Football on the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) Television Network & the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) Television Network, as well as the NBC exclusive Sunday night NFL Football game. The Entertainment & Sports Programming Network (ESPN) hosts the Monday night NFL Football telecast, which used II be on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) Television Network.

D. The First (Ist) President Of The United States, George Washington (Independent-Virginia) declared the first American Thanksgiving on November XXVIth, MDCCLXXXIX (26th, 1789.)

I am quite pleased to hear the above comment in my title. It was stated by none other than His Royal Highness Andrew Windsor, The Duke Of York. The Duke stated this when he opened a new school this past week called JCB Academy in Staffordshire, Central England.

The school caters II students ages XIV-XIX (14-19) who are interested in engineeering & business, it cost XXII (22) million quid to build & will give students absolutely state-of-the-art facilty's. HRH also encouraged students II "make the most" of job opportunities/options given to them in life. Dear Jeff:

Teachers Helping Teachers & other websites which feature lesson plans designed by teachers IV other teachers is a great idea. Who else but a fellow teacher could understand the educational game on the ground in getting our youth educated better? By giving the lesson plans out, teachers can then work with them & adapt them in their own way II sort out what points of the plans can help them in their particular classroom setting.

Dear Jeff:

I just saw a rather stirring movie last night called "Won't Back Down." It stars Maggie Gylenhaal & Viola Davis as II working mom's who want to seize (John) Adams Public School & turn it inII a private charter school. They will stop at nothing b/c they realize that with both of their children barely able II read, the Pennsylvania Public School system is badly failing their kids. Shot on location in Pittsburgh, the film had a strong sense of grittiness & realism in it. Sure there are many great teachers, but there are many teachers who are in the school just marking time & "babysitting the kids" as they put it b/c they have a guaranteed job with tenure IV life. So all they are in it IV is II collect a paycheque.

Gylenhaal & Davis get parents organized, get teachers II back them who risk losing their tenured jobs if the proposal fails. They also get the media involved & fight the school board administration red tape, as well as having II deal with the tough minded & mean Pennsylvania Teachers Union, which is headed by Academy Award (TM) Winner Holly Hunter in an amazing job in a supporting role. I would highly recommend anyone interested in education & II see how far America has fallen in failing its students get the best one possible to watch this film.

II Thumbs Up,

Rory
