Dear Dave:

I am more than willing to give The Hon. Jason Kenney, PC, MLA, United Conservative Party, Calgary-Lougheed every chance to restore civil political discourse to the Alberta Legislature. But alas as I sit there in the observer galleries year after year, decade after decade things only get worse. I go because there is the added attraction that there are no repeat "episodes", every spring & fall there are all new questions & answers as well as debates on many topics. I mean who better than I to analyze this as I have been in more Question Periods alone than most of the current MLAs combined?

Dear Dave:

I knew Tommy Banks through occasional hot dogs with him in the stands & Edmonton Prospects Baseball Club games. He also produced the first two records for the Joyful Noise Childrens Choir, of which I was lucky enough to sing on as an alumni for the second album. When in the choir, normally it is 4 years maximum for any of the singers. My voice went too deep or base in tone after 3 years. Tommy suggested to Conductor Rein Selles that I be put on doing a little percussion instead & turning pages for organists/pianists. This was great as it extended me out to 6 years. Once I got to sit in the CFRN-TV Studios at night to watch a live performance of his late night jazz television broadcast. When I heard it was leukemia that killed the Senator I was so upset as it killed his good friend Barbara Frum who interviewed Tommy about music during her radio days before CBC News: "The Journal." Gosh what a terrible thing for this city & province & Dominion we call Canada!

Tommy also allowed Ward 4 Edmonton City Council Candidate Wade Izzard to use II of his jazz standards for his website last September/October during the last Civic Election & even picked them out for Wade. Such a kind man to do this for his fellow Liberal!

Of course I saw quite a few Tommy Banks Edmonton Symphony Orchestra concerts, as well as those at The Yardbird Suite jazz club with P. J. Perry & others. He really led a great life & was taken too soon.

My oh my California is a strange State. Over in Perris just east of Los Angeles we find a house full of XIII (13) children living in chains & bonds with padlocks on them to prevent their escape (& they would have still been in this condition had not one of the children escaped this house of horrors that unspeakable.) Emaciated & malnourished, covered in filth & urine all done by their own parents. Now Dave, correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the XVIth (16th) U. S. President, the Republican of Illinois, a Mr. A. Lincoln not ban slavery in MDCCCLXV (1865?)

It was truly great to be an invited guest to the campaign launch of Alberta Party Leader Candidate Stephen Mandel. Ever so nice to Steve, Lynn, & their family members & once again express my deepest sympathies on the passing of his very classy daughter Rachel. This to me for the Mandels is a campaign of healing & its exactly what Rachel Mandel would want them to do, keep going & living life to the fullest in her honour, & for that of her son Chase & future generations! Plus 5 NDP MLAs will cross to the Alberta Party including 1 cabinet minister according to Yash Sharma. This would then potentially trigger a minority government situation as it would drop your caucus colleague Premier Rachel Notley to 49 & maybe more will then move sensing a left to centre seismic political shift. Thus forcing the ouster of Speaker Robert Wanner to be replaced by either Dr. Swann or Dr. Starke to ensure neutrality.

Here for two consecutive Sundays for lunch, I must say that as it enters Year LXXVI (76), The Commodore Restaurant has a great atmosphere which is only getting greater! Family run for several generations, this cash only, old school restaurant teaches students about economizing & keeping food costs at a reasonable price. It is a superb place for socializing in palatial downtown Edmonton. the owners & staff are very gracious & the MCMXL's (1940's) atmosphere really is relaxing & interesting as it has such a rich history of serving Edmontonians food needs in the downtown core!

Dear Dave:

You can always rely on your fellow New Democratic supporter, Former Edmonton Mayor Jan Reimer in a crisis. In the December XXIIIrd, MMXVII All New Executive Dissertations post "Water Piped In", I reminded students & families to leave windows closed to prevent water pipes from freezing. So over the holiday break, water pipes burst at Minchau School in Millwoods. So I congratulate the board & officials for getting together to place students at Jan Reimer School in Ellerslie named after Jan so quickly & efficiently. In this way, Jan's namesake ensures that these poor students at Minchau face absolutely zero interruption in their school year for the X-XII weeks that crews need to affect repairs. Jan Reimer with her stellar work at the Alberta Council Of Womens Shelters has a way of bringing people together with her command abilities as a former II term civic Chief Executive. Plus look at all the networking opportunities for the students & their families when placed together & the friendships that will develop! Note: This is a great move that "the greatest one of them all", my mother the late Mrs. June C. Koopmans, B. Ed. would have strongly approved of in keeping kids safe!

Dear Dave:

Former Mayor & Alderman/Councillor Terry Cavanaugh was a stand-up guy. XCI (91) is a glorious run. When I was in Elementary & Junior High School, Terry stopped various attempts by previous City Councils to expand the Jasper Place Bus Terminal over the east end of 100A Avenue, which would have killed off my parents furniture store, Koopmans' Furniture as we were on 100A Avenue, 1 block south of Stony Plain Road. Even then, Edmonton City Council was very anti-business.

I liked Terry because he would break into song "June is bustin' out all over" (from the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical "Carousel") whenever he saw my mom & his wife together as they were both named June. That was quite special. I also liked him because he was the Council Member who spoke up in helping my dad with dealing with red tape at City Hall & how to break through it & yet he never represented us as a Ward Councillor but did more for us than many of our reps, (I remember the absolutely useless Lyall Roper.) Terry was also one of two Council members who told me & my dad that Karen Leibovici had voted against him twice for a slot on the Edmonton Police Commission, the other being ex-police chief LeRoy Chahley.
