Dear David:
I am currently watching Academy Award (TM) Winner Jane Wyman (ex-wife of the late Former President Ronald Reagan) in her Oscar (TM) winning performance as a deaf mute in the period drama "Johnny Belinda." This film was set in rural northern Nova Scotia & has quite a nice rural Canadian feel to it. It was released in MCMXLVIII (1948) but it is still relevant today. It shows that just because a person is deaf &/or dumb, they are not any less intelligent than fulling hearing abled folks. I have an uncle who is quite deaf, as his his good wife, but he is quite a capable man & holds down a full time job.
This movie applies to modern times because it promotes the good works of learning facility's such as The Alberta School IV The Deaf. Many hearing impaired students & their family members have taken sign language & literacy courses there. This place is quite a godsend as it helps deaf & learning disabled folks gain enough written & sign skills to be able to fully function there. It also highlights just how awful rape & sexual abuse is. Especially when the victim is a woman who cannot speak &/or even cry out IV help.
We must help these students who may not be able to hear physically. If they are nurtured & respected in society, they'll be able to contribute greatly in their own quiet way.
Silent Night,
Rory

Dear David:
Having just seen "Captain America: The First Avenger" (C. MMXI Marvel Entertainment Group (TM) & Marvel Comics Enterprises (TM)) I was blown away at the quality of the film. Yes the Captain is essentially a World War II propoganda figure, but students can learn a lot about the Captain & other heroes by not just reading comics, but by getting inII designing & shaping them. Say as perhaps writers, editors, illustrators, & graphic design artists. Comics actually have some great stories & riveting scripts. Think of the indellible "Classics Illustrated" comics, or the graphic images of shock & horror upon the "Death of Superman."
Comics challenge & stimulate the brain, they along with their freewheeling & iconic images have a way of making students & people in general in reading other forms of literature. Then the next challenge is to turn these images into film in order to showcase the differences between bad & good. Remember the stirring performances of Triple Academy Award (TM) Winner Jack Nicholson & Academy Award (TM) Winner, the late Heath Ledger. Both Oscar (TM) winners, both playing "The Joker", & Heath winning his role posthumously IV that very role.
Its students of film, from the Executive Producer right on down to the lowest writers & illustrators who put these stories together. So a career doing graphic design, both of stills & videos might be an exciting one for students interested in pursuing it to the full.

The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) system must be beaming with pride today. Its delivery driver who was working near the Riverbend Branch ran after & caught a real sicko, this jagoff who sexually assaulted a X (10) year old boy. I cannot understand why any child, any impressionable young student has II live through such a tragedy. Yet it continues II happen world wide every day. "Kim" the delivery driver deserves our respect and admiration. The boy deserves laudits IV his courage under pressure & havi ng the strength II find an adult helper. The assaulter, well lets just say should have the"book" thrown at him. I am sure EPL staff would agree that this phrasology is correct considering it was their employee who brought this loser down!

Dear David:
Once again this weekend its the fantastic Heritage Festival. This is a multicultural bonanza that takes place in William Hawrelak Park. Its the XXXVIth (36th) year of the festival & it gets bigger every year. This is an ideal place to take students who are interested in studying different cultures & ethnocentric backgrounds of people. Many M's (1000's) will explore the pavillions, play games, see cultural ceremonies, & sample superb ethnic delicacies. My father Johannes & his ladyfriend being Dutch-Canadian immigrants will be manning the food booth at the Netherlands Booth. This goes to show you that there will be students of all ages at this event & its always an exciting atmosphere IV the still learning & still exploring young set of minds.

Dear David:
Students who study the field of multiculturalism have II realize that political enemies of Prime Minister Steve Harper are harping over nothing to gain an advantage against him. They say Steve hasn't got enough minority talent. And yet:
I. He has Peter Penashue of Labrador as Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs & Leona Aglukkaq as Minister of Health. These two fine Ministers are of First Nations descent and are quite talented.
II. Steve has Steven Fletcher of Manitoba as his Minister of State (Transport). Mr. Fletcher is paralyzed from the neck down & yet he is a brilliant MP & Cabinet Minister.
III. The Prime Minister has Timothy Uppal as his Minister of State (Democratic Reform). Timothy is a fine member of the Sikh community & adds many talented ideas II the cabinet table.
So remember David, IV people to attack the Prime Minister about not having enough ethnicity in his cabinet & then passing that information down to students is ludicrous. I think Steve Harper has named a fully diverse & multicultural & multitalented cabinet!

Dear David:
Medical students in the Domnion of Canada need II be aware of just how brave a man The Honourable Leader of the Opposition & Leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada is. What Jack Layton is doing as the Member of Parliament IV Toronto-Danforth in raising awareness of cancer is astounding. Jack's father was a distinguished cabinet minister in the Brian Mulroney Progressive Conservative Government who died of cancer. Jack has already beaten prostate cancer. Let us hope that Smilin' Jack beats this cancer II.
By putting a public face on cancer, he & his good wife Olivia Chow-Layton, the MP IV Trinity Spadina are encouraging other Canadians who might also be susceptible II it to be tested as well. Students who are becoming doctors, nurses, as well as other health professionals should consider going inII say medical research. When political science students & students studying social sciences feel the chips are down, they should write &/or type a letter to their local Member of Parliament (MP) &/or Senator. Sometimes a personal leeter rather than an email will let that politician may give a more personal response. They can then potentially solve the problem at hand faster & thereIV have happier constituents.
Mailing letters to MP's, Senators, & the Governor General of Canada is postage free as long as you write MP, Senator &/or Governor General on your outgoing envelopes. Dear David:
I have been looking inII booze related stats IV Canada & the United States. A frightening stat was the fact that LXXX% (80%) of kids in school on average will try alcohol &/or some form of other stimulant while in school. As much as possible we need II try & keep kids off of booze. Seeing their parent/guardian drink copiously at home or even say just once a day having a shot or sip of booze can definitely influence kids to drink. We have II nip this problem in the bud & encourage kids to stay away from drinking.
Alcohol can lead to distorted coordination, hearing, visual problems, & motor skills. It can also lead to a change in mood in behaviour & many diseases of the body such as kidney & liver failure. Without proper thinking ability's & control of their bodies, kids will not do as well in school & will not be able to adapt as well to life.
Cheers II Good Health & Moderation,

Having just worked a swing labor shift at the bindery of Quad Graphics here in Edmonton from 3:30PM-11:30PM, I just want to stress how important manufacturing & labor jobs are. I met an employee who has worked there XXIV years, she loves her job. From the top management, all the way down to the janitorial staff, Quad Graphics is an absolutely outstanding organization in the printing sector & an amazing safety reputation. The manufacturing & labor jobs they provide are absolutely vital II the economy of the Dominion of Canada.
If students are not geared to a professional or business focus, I highly recommend they take courses at trade schools & in the labour force thru the Alberta Apprenticeship Program. Many folks are geared to work with their hands and body first, rather than their minds. These students & future labourers need II realize that there is no shame in that. Many careers are labor focused & without labor workers, professionals & managers would not be able II get a lot of things done.

Dan Holinda is right in his opinion piece about getting rid of smoking around children in automobiles. In an enclosed space, how are children's lungs & other organs supposed to grow and get stronger if they are constantly breathing in second hand smoke from which they cannot escape? If children are getting sick from the toxins & carcinogens in auto smoke, then how are they expected to start &/or continue the learning process upon starting up of playschool? I would also like II praise The Edmonton Journal & David Evans for giving this piece such a prominently displayed slot. Another point Mr. Holinda might not have considered, if the children in these vehicles cannot breathe, this would greatly reduce their ability to participate in Physical Education Component courses of their respective school. It will also make them lethargic & unable II want II even burn off energy at recess.

Students taking the Tourism Courses in High School & those working IV the summer in hotels definitely ought II know the value of making sure that their hotels & other places of residences need II be safe IV the weary traveller. The rooms have been clean, the staff most courteous & gracious upon check-in & check-out. The housekeep;ing staff has been beyond excellent & each hotel has found us a successor hotel II stay at upon the next day when they became fully occupied with tourists. I highly suggest to High School Students that they take the Tourism Courses, in particular the ones on the Travel & Accomodation Sector, either through the Alberta Distance Learning Centre, or any other school that offers ADLC courses or a similiar course. Students must learn II realize that tourists are very vital II our economic well-being, as are folks who through no fault of their own have been displaced, &/or business travellers. J.R. in particular feels that the chuckwagon races need to be less of a pressure cooker IV the horses so that they can gallop at a more relaxed pace, with more space between wagons as they round turns so that there is less likely to be injuries &/or deaths to these equine delights.
Horses & other animals have a soul to, they should allow students & young people interested in animals to make suggestions that will improve the quality of life IV these fine athletic creatures who provide so much entertainment & happiness. What's tragic is there are horse deaths every year at the Stampede, there just doesn't need II be.
Horseplay,
Rory

Dear David:
The justice system in Florida sure treated Casey Anthony more fairly than I would have. I would like II feed her II the Florida alligators. I do not care that she was found "not guilty" of murdering her daughter. She may not have done so, but to have not reported to police about the missing child IV XXXI(31) days is ludicrous. I mean what kind of mother does that? She might have been innocent of murder, but she is covering up who did it. That little sweetheart of a II year old daughter will now never get II grow up & be a student & have the fun of experiencing life, how is this fair?

Dear David:
When "News Of The World" British Tabloid Owner & Billionaire Rupert Murdoch calls his own paper's actions despicable & repugnant, you know that they are in serious trouble. Journalism students need II learn how wrong it was IV "News" II have hacked inII the voicemail records of a missing XIII (13) year old British student & even erase her messages. Falsely giving hope & reporting grisly details giving her parents false hope that she was still alive. This is especially awful when you consider the poor lady was eventually found butchered II death!
I don't mind that this garbage scow of an organization is going out of business. These so called "journalists' do not deserve II be in the business. We need ethical journalists like Editor Colin Smith of The Edmonton Senior & Elise Stolte of The Edmonton Journal, or Naomi Lakritz of The Calgary Herald. These are real journalists with standards of integrity & excellence. THey would never hack inII private phone records, they would have the class II inform proper legal authority's to preserve a family('s) dignity.

Dear David:
I have always liked KISS Guitarist Gene Simmons. Sure he's unconventional, but he's a family man with two kids, a beautiful common-law Playboy Playmate Wife in Shannon Tweed who he is faithful to, & he doesn't smoke, drink, or do drugs! Here he is now donating two autographed guitars for the Global Edmonton TV News Kids IV Cancer Motorcycle Charity Ride. This will of course raise M's (1000's) of extra dollars IV the charity.
Thanks Gene,
Rory

While I certainly have made no commitments to any of the VI candidates running to replace Edward Michael Stelmach as Progressive Conservative (PC) Leader & Tory Premier, I am truly impressed with what Douglas Horner did yesterday. Making his announcement of why he should be PC Leader on the steps of the Alberta Legislature, & then focusing the main thrust of his remarks on education was smart & erudite, as well as thoughtful. It shows he still has his old portfolio of Advanced Education in him. While I agree the economic situation is very important IV Albertans right now, Douglas's statement on Education being very important & that it should be highlighted more makes great sense.
Kudos Douglas,
Rory

Dear David:
I have been reading about some horrid attacks on students & others by bed bugs & other Insecticions such as batbugs & mites. The home is definitely the first place where a line of defense needs II be established. These creatures will feed on blood by gorging themselves on yours, your kids, whomever. Whatever source of Energon they can obtain. Survival at all costs. Plus they can live IV months on end on in sealed containers w/o oxygen as they expend very little. So just when you think your kids, your family, & you are safe, be aware b/c the bugs could still be alive. Kids need their blood, these bugs can cause horrible rashes & make folks feel tired. For the safety of family's, stop them quickly b/c kids can say carry them II & from school, then their other classmates might get latched upon & bring the bugs home II their own houses.

Dear David:
I had a really good time yesterday at The Yardbird Suite on Tommy Banks Way. There were not only many jazz & musical students in the audience IV the free concert as part of the Edmonton Jazz Music Festival, there were students from Grades IX-XII playing & jamming with other jazz fanatics. The festival runs from June XXIVth to the end of today. It was sublime, esoteric, relaxing, & just amazing as these kids had only been playing as a group IV the festival for about V days. So they just bonded amazingly well. The students were awesome & several solos were featured on organ, bass, trumpet, trombone, & the good old jazz master: the saxophone, as well as many other instruments.
Its so much fun II see these students swing & be so precise in the building that gave Senator Tommy Banks his start. Tommy would have been most proud II have been there yesterday. I went with a couple of friends & they also enjoyed the brilliant musique.

Dear David:
The lack of cleanliness factors of computer keyboards at Edmonton library's & at other public terminal stations is quite frightening. I wipe down any public computer I use with sanitizer & a paper towel both beIV & after I use them, just as I do with my own computers at home. The importance of this to student usage is paramount. The amount of germs on computer terminals is staggering. Disease can be transmitted easily & students wanting to use open stations do not know if the previous occupant(s) of their respective terminal washed their hands beIV say coming back from the washroom II resume their computer time. Be safe, clean your keyboards, carry sanitizer & wipes with you or ask an on duty librarian IV assistance.
Cleanliness,
Rory

Dear David:
A good way IV students to explore Canada is to actually travel through it during the summer. Parents can encourage their children to learn about the nation as its quite a great place. If the parents cannot afford II send their kids out of Province from say Edmonton, send their kids to friends or relatives houses in say Calgary, or a surrounding agricultural community around our city. Or send them to their local library so they can learn about our great Dominion online & through books. Enroll them in a summer camp. There are so many fascinating things II learn about Canada plus its always evolving.
Good II Have You Here William & Catherine,
Rory
