Dear David:

Educational columnist Linda White has it right. Teachers & students need to set boundaries. They can be friendly, but a sense of decorum should be maintained. So a student should call his teacher/instructor "Professor or Mrs. Hancock" for instance. If students are adults, then the instructor should respond by saying, "Mr. or Ms. Jackson" for example. By having some formality in the classroom setting, the teachers & students will then learn to respect eachother more in the classroom, & in any future classes they ma have together.
