Dear Jeff:
Although this particular phrase was never actually uttered by Sergeant Joe Friday of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), its attributed to him. Yes indeed IV a slogan it is a very accurate part of police work as cops have II deal with folks like myself who has Aspergers Syndrome or "high functioning autism." I talk II much at certain points & admit its a mechanical difficulty of which I have no real control over. As a result, it is very hard IV me at times II come to a point, although I have excellent observational skills IV details & such. Sometimes that detail, every little bit of minutiae & minor points can be helpful to cops in an investigation. Today, Sgt. Friday has to calm a young teenage boy down named Robert who he & Officer Frank Smith know has been selling drugs II teens at schools to keep them high & incapacitated while he & his gangster buddies take over the schools & steal their assets IV sale so they can use the cash from their sale to buy more drugs, booze, guns & other items IV launching a full on gang war against the LAPD & its cache of weapons. The drugged up students then cease II be a threat & with more weapons, the cops including the Sarge have a better chance of losing with an equalization in their enemies weapons totals. As the Sarge pulled Robert off the street quickly so as to not lose the advantage, he has to forcefully & succinctly try to get as much information out of the boy (whose understandably agitated being under arrest) as possible. Sgt. Friday has to glean the facts IV his reports & his bosses from Robert so that LAPD executives, chiefs, & patrol officers can come up with & institute counter measures to ensure that law & order is maintained on the streets & in the schools of Los Angeles.
"We've got the names of everybody in your gang, we know the whole set-up. Now you go ahead with your idea & your going II buy a lot of trouble Bob!"

Rory

With an MO like that, Bob probably went on to become a corporate CEO.
