Hon. Gordon Dirks, B. Ed., M. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Calgary-Elbow
Dear Gordon:
An Editor's Note: As stated when this blog did XVIIIth President Ulysses S. Grant, Republican-Illinois, the "S" in President Harry Truman's name (just like Grant's) didn't actually stand for anything. It was a "stand alone" initial as Harry had one grandpa with the last name that started with "S" & another with the Ist name that also started with "S." Thus both grandpas could claim Harry was partly named after them.
As the man from Independence, President Harry S. Truman wasn't allowed to play a lot of rough outdoor sports with other kids. His mother sheltered Harry quite a bit as she wanted him II read & learn. The President instills his mother's & his belief in books & a proper literary foundation in life. This was wise as he had to take over at the tag end in the emergency of WWII & the sudden death of XXXIInd President Franklin Roosevelt, Democratic-New York.
"Upon books the collective education of the race depends; they are the sole instruments of registering, perpetuating & transmitting thought."
