Hon. Demetrios Nicolaides, B. A., M. P. S., Ph. D., ECA, MLA, Minister of Education, United Conservative, Calgary-Bow
Dear Demetrios:
Some of my fondest memories in terms of voting remind me of my very good mother, Mrs. June C. Koopmans, B. Ed., who of course taught as a student then regular teacher in Clandonald, Alberta. As well as at Afton & Rio Terrace Elementary Schools here in Edmonchuk! The last time I took her to a voting station was at Meadowlark Elementary School. Mom always wanted to go for a nutritious hot meal afterwards & always insisted on paying, now how could I refuse such charming company as I reminisce on this Good Friday?! What I really loved was mom's focus on school hot breakfast & lunch programs. This lack of nutrition for children & their families concerned mom long after she retired from teaching. It was a good focus for her what with her diabetes, mom wanted students of all ages to be safe in school & have good food. Whether they brought it from home &/or ate in a school food situation such as a school cafeteria. Slowing down the last few years, mom eventually preferred to fill out "mail-in" ballots & we'd cook at her house or bring a "takeout" meal after filled them out & I mailed them. Mom was the person that introduced me to "mail-in" ballot options. Gosh she was really into democracy from her unique educational perspective!
June C. Koopmans,
Rory
