Dear David:
Kudos II a Mr. Garth D. Izzard who writes II the Edmonton Journal on Saturday, May XVth, MMX about being accosted in the downtown Library. What a truly brave person. Obviously Police and Library Security weren't around II help him so he bought people who threatened him food and beverages in the Second Cup at Stanley A. Milner Branch Library, plus gave his hour of computer time one day in order to preserve himself.
Its a situation Mr. Izzard shouldn't have had II face. That no one should have to face. Mr. Izzard's point about opening branch library's year round from 1-5pm makes sense. It makes sense as it will protect students of all ages from being accosted downtown as there will be less personages studying in the downtown branch if suburbian & satellite branches open year round on Sundays. Less customer traffic means less arrests and therefore a more quieter & conducive place to learn (& gain knowledge) downtown on Sundays for patrons who are law abiding.
Regards,
Rory

Dear David:
In Cherry Brook, Nova Scotia: there has been an extreme injustice done. Principal Ken Fells was unjustly removed from his job & transferred because he has honour, integrity & guts! He should be reinstated instantly. The evil male student had obtained inappropriate pictures of a fellow student who happened II be female. Well bully IV the Princpal for putting his arm and back into the problem. People who say he shouldn't have used force in this matter can go stand in the corner IV a XX minute timeout. They can go to hell IV all I care.
This man, Mr. Fells stopped pornography, in point of fact: child pornography in its tracks and clearly should be fully instated, given a reward & have a town parade and day in his honour. While the student should go to jail & or receive any other punishment(s) that a Nova Scotia court sees fit!
Hurrah to the RCMP IV not laying charges against Mr. Wells! The male student however deserves real punishment.
Happy Soldier's Memorial Day David,
Rory

Dear David:
I must extend my congratulations to the students, teachers, staff & administration of Bev Facey High School IV allowing the XIII (13) Science & Biology students to watch the introspective & interactive autopsy video. Furthermore, the reportage skills of Mrs. Thandiwe Vela & the Edmonton Journal were once again outstanding in this matter. My recommendation is that this video since Bev Facey has it be made province wide for use of all students in the Biology, Science & in particular the Forensic Science courses offered at many High Schools already, such as St. Gabriel Storefront Cybernetics Catholic School in St. Albert or the Alberta Distance Learning Centre in Barrhead.
The video should be available as a classroom instructional tool & of course IV students who must be home schooled due to learning difficulties &/or difficulties. There should never be any barriers II education. I am sure arrangements can be made IV this video to be distributed by getting in contact with the Centre of Science & Industry in Columbus, Ohio.
Until CSI: Crime Scene Investigation came out (set in the Las Vegas, Nevada operations theatre), I was always afraid of dead bodies and decay. This program with its educational & formulatic autopsy scenes helped me raise my scientific awareness instead (that & a severe crush on Marg Helgenberger who plays CSI Level III: Catherine Willows. I like her because shes just as smart as any of the male CSI's & her feminine side gives them fresh perspective in handling cases.) Thus proving that both males and females can be great scientists & that female and male science students should be given fully equal opportunities to succeed in their chosen scientific field of endeavour.

Dear David:
There is all this focus on the Muslim Community Federation trying to a fully viable and operational Islamic school up and running in the Lessard area of Edmonton. With neighbours being bitterly opposed. Well with all this talk about Catholic & Public schools needing to merge to save space, why not have say Public & Jewish schools merge. Or Catholic & Jewish. Even Jewish & Muslim.
If two different & diametrically opposed religions can come together & forget their strife in order to save costs and promote peace, maybe they could be a harbinger for peace in say the Middle East. There are Jewish & Muslim outreach programs through B'nai Brith & others. Egypt & Israel get along better then Lebanon & Egypt, two Muslim nations.
If we could somehow get two or even three groups in one school, say Catholic, Public & Jewish each using 1/3 of the space, think of the cost factors that could be saved. Thus giving the boards of all groups more infrastructure cash to meet other pressing needs!
Shalom,
Rory

Dear David:
III cheers IV Father Mike "Catfish" Mireau & his loyal buddy, the pooch Nemo. His Christian/Catholic outreach performed in a modern, esoteric style is certainly reminiscent of a young Father Michael Troy. Adapting modern themes and having himself and his dog Nemo dress up like superheroes sure influences, relaxes and calms troubled students.
My congrats to Mrs. Hanneke Brooymans & her reportage team at the Edmonton Journal. I like that the Catholics had the guts to appoint Fthr. Mireau as Disrict Chaplain. An ordained priest in the role who can say lines from science fiction films, in an inspired manner. What a truly unique choice. I sure wish the church & the good Father best of luck in his future ministerial endeavours and entreaties of youth, Catholic & non-Catholic alike.

May XXVIth, MMX
Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud
Dear David:
I. I must say the piece on B1 & B4 in the May XXVth, MMX Edmonton Journal by Mrs. Sarah O'Donnell & media guru/programmer Mr. Mack Male was very informative. I had been wondering myself for years the exact demographic pattern of where kids live in Edmonton. But I would strongly criticize their exclusion of Charter students however, especially as there are Charter schools attached to Edmonton Public & Edmonton Catholic. Ie: Edmonton Public's Aurora School. That is in addition to the private ones. Also why is Mrs. O'Donnell & Mr. Male not including online students, paper correspondence students, special needs students and home schooled students. Plus you must consider as Trustee George Rice said in last night's Public School Board Meeting, there are Edmonton Public & Catholic students online throughout the Province. My credits in the end were from St. Gabriel Storefront Cybernetics School in St. Albert. But I have also taken Edmonton Public courses, why was I not included as say a home schooled student, a glaring set of errors, thus the demographic focus is quite off.
II. I believe it was quite magnanimous of me II offer my cat's services to Trustee Board Chairman Don Fleming when I got up to speak. He said he had to fix a mouse problem at a school. I offered up James Redwing Cat Koopmans's services IV free in order II keep school administration costs down. Provided my cat was allowed II keep any mice he caught as compensation.
III. I truly thank the Board IV allowing me II show off my incredible feat of having 200 High School credits, 2 Regular High School Diplomas. I also showed off my Athabasca University Bachelor of Administration Degree to add to the dramatics. Kept my oral presentation to under II minutes but had to of course pan all III items around the room IV maximum effect. I am so very proud of being "the best of the best" in Alberta. Everyone in the room could see that I believe in zero barriers to education!
IV. I really enjoyed the oral presentation on World Multiculturalism Day (June XXVIIth, MMX) by II sisters, their father & their teacher. The ladies were of Muslim faith & were here in Canada less than XIX months. There phonetic structure of sentences & pauses to emphasize punctuation & their points were amazing. They will be an amazing addition to Canada's rich cultural mosaic. Let me put it this way, these young ladies speak much better English then I do Arabic.
V. Trustee David Colburn has got II be my favourite Trustee. The enthusiasm he showed when talking about being at a World Aboriginal Day of Games in his Ward was very refreshing. You can truly see he takes pride in his aboriginal students & their family's. As well as children of other minority & disadvantaged groups.
VI. Thanks again II the board IV its discussion in terms of budgetary needs IV Edmonton Public for special needs students, the board is doing wonders especially when the Alberta Government is royally screwing them over & constantly shorting them on promised allotted educational dollars. It should be once gain pointed out that if Ed Stelmach & Dave Hancock gave 1/2 the taxing power back II Trustees and worked on educational concerns tangentially with them, they'd win what another IV or V terms of office as they'd lock in the educational & teachers union votes!
Forbearing,
Rory

Dear David:
Who would have thought that once again, "Law & Order": Year XX, Episode 456 on NBC Universal Television would do me one last honour with its final episode. Because: "In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by II separate yet equally important groups. The police who investigate crimes & the district attorney's who prosecute the offenders. These are there stories...boom, boom!"
The cops, all the way up to their sqaud commander, Lt. Anita Van Buren & further up the chain to District Attorney Jack McCoy banded together hard to track down a rogue teacher who was plotting on the internet to blow up a Manhattan District School in the City of New York proper. Their hard edged investigative skills and panache at getting extra information from informants and uncooperative witnesses led II the successful capture of the suspect & the safe detonation of the bombs. 15 mililon plus viewers a week in its 20th year, makes you wonder who the genius at NBC it was who cancelled the show.
School safety from threats both real & perceived both real & fictional as in this episode of tv show that Law & Order can still pack one hell of a punch. It also shows that there are still many stories left to tell. Alberta students, nay all students must be given the best of protection, no matter what the cost. Farewell Law & Order gang, you will be missed! And thanks one last time!

Dear David:
As I see this royal scandal develop wherein His Royal Highness Prince Andrew is having his good name destroyed by his ex-wife, Sarah:The Duchess of York, it makes me all the more pleased that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the IInd is holding power at all costs. We must teach students to be more like her & her good sons Andrew & Charles who give away millions to charitable groups. They are always doing good, unlike Sarah who would sell her own daughters to make money. That's just sad & if students don't believe me, just ask the girls dad Prince Andrew He gave her several million quid and part ownership in his home after their divorce out of respect for her as the kids mother. He also gave her years of free rent when she was in financial straights and has also paid off her debtors.
Students should see that Sarah is not all bad, no. She has done wonders for charity groups. But she took Weight Watchers for millions and then did not show up at agreed upon public appearances. We need II keep in mind how great Liz is as we celebrate this Victoria Day. Students should be thankful that Sarah Ferguson could never take command of the throne & perhaps bring down the monarchy.

School service should not just be for school chosen charity's. In my recent service IV Religious XV-XXXV from St. Gabriel Storefront School of Cybernetics in St. Albert, I was allowed to coordinate my III Christian Service Projects. So I drove cancer patients around and started up prayer groups of multiple faiths for students to pray IV peace in homes IIgether.
I also drove around a couple and spend 25 hours doing paperwork IV them, for which I was successful in getting them a rent subsidy. My other assignment was to drive my mother around II diabetic appointments. Which became neccessary when her car was in the mechanic shop & IV promised rides through Alberta Health Services never showed up. which was annoying as she had free coverage for the rides through Blue Cross.
Helping folks is fun, it feels good. Encourage students II do community projects through their own faith, in tandem with others, or just volunteer on their own. My cat James Redwing and I like going into hospices and seniors residences IV pet therapy. Stroking & loving up the little fellow makes folks feel good. Especially sick kids. They feed him treats and his purring calms them down.

That Elwood Brinton is my new hero. In tandem with the cops who had their sirens blaring, this gave Elwood just enough reaction time II get his daughter yanked back & himself out of the way. His fortitude, bearing & class in this matter in protecting his child make him aces in my book. No child should have II go through being possibly killed in her school yard or on the sidewalk near it.
I mean the behaviour dsplayed by these thieves was beyond atrocious. Stealing is wrong but if you have any common sense as a thief you go through industrial areas and core streets. If there was ever a case where the cops, the City of Edmonton & Edmonton Catholic should dole out a reward IV being heroic and a civilian crime fighting buddy, its to Elwood Brinton & his brave little girl!

Dear David:
There seems to be a lack of accountability towards Alberta's great train & rail line past. In particular, our prominence with Father Albert Lacombe and the North West Territorial stature we used to have. David, we need to encourage students II visit the Alberta & Edmonton Railway Museum in Northeastern Edmonton. As well as railway structures throughout Calgary & Alberta.
These old trains are being allowed to rot and thats a shame. Students should be educated in all aspects of our mechanical past. In particular those who are interested in welding, industrial arts & the like, such as automotives. The kids today should be allowed to fix the trains in exchange IV school credits & their meals & transport costs from the facility being provided. Without trains, this nation would not be built. This Province wouldn't have accepted great immigrants such as my father & his family.
So in order II chart a course to our future, we need II have the Alberta students of today fix up our trains from the past. Too bad Pierre Berton wasn't still around, he'd back me up on this strongly.

Rory

Dear David:
Why is the audio cassette going the way of the dinosaur? Unlike Video Cassette Tapes, old school audiotapes do not break down as fast & many titles at library's are disappearing from the shelves. Including here at this branch in your home riding. Librarians have told me that blind & physically & mentally disabled kids have an easier time loading the audio cartridges/cassettes into tape players. Wheras CD's, CD Rom's & DVD's are in packages that are not nearly as easy to open or just outright access.
They keep asking for increased funding through the Edmonton Public Library system & different governmental departments. I agree with the librarians, this is almost a case of student/child/kid human rights discrimination, especially if the kids (&/or their parents/guardians) are more comfortable with the old audio format, rather then the new digital format. I think there should be sections just for audiotapes, in particular ones that have braille accompanying access for visually impaired personages.
Let me point out David, VHS tapes are still produced by educational groups in mass quantities such as Public Broadcasting System Kids TV Division & British Broadcasting Corporation Child Friendly Initiative programs.
Copiously,
Rory

Dear David:
Why is it that at school barbecues I have attended in the past few years, propane tanks are used in the majority of cases? I would conjecture that as schools already have natural gas(oline) hookups for their heat conduction, it would be cheaper to buy all schools in the Province each 1 or say 2 natural gas(oline) barbecues. This would eliminate the running out of propane or butane fuel at events. It would also completely allay any & all chances of an explosion(s) that could cause students, staff, parents, administators, guests to be injured &/or maimed in some capacity.
Unabashed,
Rory

Rigged Process
Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin., Capilano Public Library Terminal #XV, Edmonton, Alberta
May XVIIth, MMX
Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud
Dear David:
Looking at my liner notes IV the closure meetings of February & March, the whole process seemed rigged. The Trustees, with the exception of Board Chairman Fleming were ordered II shut up & were completed controlled & manipulated by Edmonton Public School Board Administration. Except for asking questions in the discussion groups, they never orated their own thoughts in reverse (probably to keep their reelection writ chances alive, minus the 3 who have announced they are standing down.)
Crosscheck this to today's Edmonton Journal's Letters Page. And this lady writer is right. The LRT process, like the school closure process is rigged. Al Mauer & the City officials & subcontract firms speak II you, but there is no Q&A. There is no educational background or chance IV the public II actually have input. Steve Mandel & the City Council have the votes pre juryrigged, just like the school closure meetings were held, but the closures were going II happen regardless. The meetings are just being held IV semantics and because they are legally required II do so.
Checking Page 814 of my 991 pages of context file notes, I noticed that the EPSB Administration were afraid II take oral questions from the floor & were shouted down 26 times IV not really doing so. They just answered pre written & written questions from the audience there by grouping the questions & then rigging the answers the way they wanted them to come out. So the closure process would go ahead, but then the Trustees get the blame. When clearly it is former Premier Ralph Klein's & former Minister of Education Halvar C. Johnson's fault IV seizing the taxing power from Trustees in MCMXCIV (1994) & then not providing proper infrastructure and educational dollars back II keep up with expenses in the 1st place.
What I want to see are the donation levels II Trustee Candidates & Trustees by land developers, consultants & speculators. Then we'd know why the burbs are getting so many new schools when the inner city has plenty of servicable schools that could be reconfigured & readapted!
Quintessential,
Rory

As I am not a Trustee candidate, I went as a member of the general public to listen, chat, learn & cojutate. It was rather enightenng. It was held at the Woodcroft Community League from 7-9pm on Saturday night.
Ben Henderson of City Council was there, Ray Martin gave a few remarks on good governance. Trusees Huff & Ripley were also there. As was Weslyn Mather & Lynn Odynski. I learned a lot & met some great folks. As I am not running at this pont in time, I really enjoyed hearing other viewpoints. Mr. Hudjik has a great group. He cares, they care. I love that!

What a brave little boy Tahir Asif is. VIII years old and he's already a winner in my mind (and heart.) A double lung transplant & he pulls through. I mean this little boy has gone through more in VIII years then most folks go through in a lifetime! Let us hope other kids who are in similar circumstances are just as brave. Kudos II Elise Stolte & her reportage department at The Edmonton Journal IV bringing this story to light! Also my thanks II the Stollery Kids Hospital for giving this boy a fighting chance! Kids shouldn't die at VIII. They should grow up to be big and strong, and have lives of their own.
Please encourage young & old kids alike II sign donor cards & raise money IV sick kids. Do this in Alberta schools David. Get parents &/or guardians on this initiative as well. If their kid is dying or dead & can't be saved, then tell them II give the organs II other kids who need a little boost in their own fights! I tell you David, when I picked up the Edmonton Journal this AM, I shed a few tears. I mean how could any human not? I mean VII kindergarten kids and their II superviors hacked to death with a hatchet. What an awful way II go. Kindergarten yet, kids who haven't even started their lives. Some of them if not all are their parents only child under the 1 child per family child policy. I can't imagine their heartache. Whats worse is this is not the first incident there of violence against young students. 25 plus dead and injured this year already! My brother has a little sweetheart of a daughter attending Chinese playschool now. I just pray IV her safety even more now each day!
Perhaps David panic buttons should be installed under every teachers and students desk in the Province right away!

Dear David:
It seem II me that this special tax levy plebicite of 20 million per year for 3 years by Trustee Catherine Ripley of Edmonton Public should go ahead. It got voted down, too bad Lyle Oberg made it only allowable during Trustee election years. If the new Vice-Chair of the Board had real courage, she'd propose a joint ad buy/plebicite proposal with Edmonton Catholic. Yes this would cut each boards take (if passed) to 10 million per year. But at the same time, they'd only be out of pocket 1/2 as much in terms of revenue & promoting the fact that there should be a plebicite on the ballot in October MMX.
The Catholic & Public Boards hold combined meetings & do joint activities year round already. So why not expand on this unprecendented cooperation in these times of economic austerity & uncertainty? When you have an administrative building where the letters of the building title are falling off the facade & not being replaced: its time to start taking pride again, try new ideas & learn to cut costs.
Regards,
Rory

Well what can be said about Normie Kwong? Chinese Canadian, great businessman, Grey Cup champion, philanthropist & Lieutenant Governor of this Province. From poverty right to the top of the heap. Gosh I wish him a glorious retirement with his gorgeous bride Mary & all students should be encouraged to learn about our illustrious XVIth Head of Regal Authority & thank him IV his service. I mean what a juggernaut. 79 years old and stepping in just when we had our hearts broken with Lois Hole's early & tragic death.
We need to encourage students in the school of Alberta's XXIst Century of the importance of the office that Normie is leaving & that Lt. Col. Don Ethell is taking over. We need to have a seperation between Head of Her Majesty's Government & the Representative of the Queen. Remember, the Lt. Governor forms the governments & dissolves them. It is the Lt. Governor who invites politicos to try & take over our 13 elected Premierships and the Governor General who aides any potential Prime Ministers.
Tell students we must keep up this Vice-Regal tradition. Without proper command & control systems in place, Premier Ed Stelmach & his potential succssors might become too dictatorial. Thus seizing too much power and destroying the monarchial checks and balances that are created by British Pariamentary laws and traditions. So thank you Normie & many years of a blessed retirement. Dear David:
The matter of the Lessard School/Mosque problem could be solved quite amicably. Get the Muslim Council of Canada to agree to hand over their building in a straight exchange for one of the empty closed down inner city schools. A straight exchange & a win win for all.
Edmonton Public gains a smaller sized streetfront administration building. While the Muslims gain a school property with infrastructure in place. Say Eastwood School. Each building needs about 12 million Canadian Funds in repairs. So no side loses anything. And the Muslims by controlling such a huge property can knock down the rotting old gym and readapt the old & sturdy infrastructure into a School/Mosque.
The south side of the building has a parking lot in place., This can be expanded further south. Thus alleviating any worries for neighbouring residents when the Muslim worshippers come for daily prayers and to pick up their children.

Dear David:
I would think putting in a communications link between the Public & Catholic schools from Elementary to Senior High across the province to NAIT, SAIT & other Post-Secondary institutions cafeterias would be a great idea. Students in these programs are trained II be superb chefs in Edmonton & provincewide. I am sure they would be happy to pass on their knowledge about food safety & food handling, as well as other quality control issues to the chefs of the future.
Yes a direct culinary link between these institutions and non Post-Secondary institutions would make great sense. The better the food is prepared, the less the chance there will be with a culinary overseer of food poisoning incidents and the like. Plus, the Post-Secondary students could then work in tandem with the younger kids to create "student thought out" hot meals for the hot lunch programs located in Edmonton's inner city, as well as inner city's of say Calgary, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, etc.

Rory

Jennifer Martin Jefferson Humphyries And Kindergarten Paid Extra Access

May VIIth, MMX
Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud
Dear David:
There will be a broadcast on Access TV tonight, "Alberta Primetime" with Jennifer Martin. I guess that the Province does not pay IV full day Kindergarten. It seems that there might be exceptions II this. I IV one believe in as much freedom of education as possible. But at the same time, I think its discrimination to give funds to some & the extra full day hours II parents of richer kids. The parents should pay the entire differential if they can afford II do so.
Also, giving some kids more Kindergarten hours then others gives them a tactical advantage socially & extra beginning academic skills. This is rotten as all Kindergarten kids should be treated the same.
Regards & I Hope Your Bride Janet Gets A Great Mother's Day Brunch,

Dear David:
I am not sure if you saw the Edmonton Journal of yesterday or May Vth, MMX. But just look at the front page. A young man came back to beat his cancer, leukemia in fact & successfully graduated NAIT one year late. Elise Stolte should be proud of herself, this is journalism at its best. This young man believes as I do, there should be no barriers to education, not even cancer!
Rock On,
Rory

Dear David:
Once again its Victory In Europe, Plus LXV. As a man of Dutch Heritage myself and with The Netherlands the birthplace of my father Johannes (which proudly is my 2nd name as well) I strongly encourage Alberta Social Studies students continually be taught about the great relationship between Canada & Holland.
My father & our family are dual citizens of Holland and I adore the country so much, I consider it a second home. So please David encourage students to read books on the European Theatre & the great bond that we as Canadians or as the Dutch say "Canadese" have developed since MCMXL (1940.) I encourage Albertan students of Dutch heritage & other ethnic backgrounds to travel to the Netherlands and visit tourist sites and historic monuments, battlefields, and graveyards.

Dear David:
I got my 200 credits through an online institution. So my feeling is that all online high schools should be forced II accept upgrading or returning students of all ages. This not only prevents possible human rights complaints/lawsuits, the extra revenues IV course fees generated brings in extra profits which can be used to hire more teachers &/or develop new programs.
Hope The Convention Gave You Good Policies In Terms Of A Framework,
Rory

Dear David:
It seems II me that if the Forensics XXV & XXXV courses were expanded out II allow students to watch trials on tv or in person, they would be a lot more relevant II students as they could assess their course materials in real time. Thus increasing the excitement level of their learning & stimulating to a greater degree their olifactory senses.
David, if this were done, Alberta Distance Learning Centre could increase the number of Forensics course offerings & thereIV their overall profits.
Regards,
Rory

Dear David:
It does seem II me that if all of the math & science tests were converted back II partially written format, the students would be less able II cheat or be tempted II cheat. By throwing the students curveballs & making them have II think partly in analytical written format, they'll have II think like a student & a professor simultaneously. Which will make the tests overall harder II pass. So then the students will have II study harder as they will have a harder time bringing in cheat notes IV muliple choice, numercal response, as well as long form essay response.
I Hope The PC Policy Convention Was Productive & Enlightening,
Rory

Way II Catch The Cheaters

Dear David:
I want to say kudos II Alberta Education officials for their diligence in nailing down this cheating scandal. I also applaud Sarah O'Donnell & Keith Gerein of The Edmonton Journal in their investigative ability. As someone who wrote (by exam challenge) VI exams fairly & honestly at Jasper Place High School in January MMX myself, I am horrified by the actions of these students.
It seems II me that since I earned all 200 of my credits in High School honestly, and a University Degree (to boot), these kids should be forced to as well. There should be no more online access of old or new High School exams. And there should be no more proctoring by non teachers or home residence tests. If a student is sick, then let him/her write in a hospital or say a hospice.
Bravo IV getting these kids caught. Their delay in moving onto post-secondary institutions will teach them a lesson & make them stronger & more forthright in life. They'll know the path to virtue is by being totally transparent and hard working in both mental & physical function.
Have A Great Policy Convention David,
Rory
