Dear David:
As stated yesterday & many other times in this blog, art & the making of it is good. Today I will be taking part in a drawing class at a local community hall. Later, the seniors in this centre I know have invited other seniors and their family's to come over & learn how II make candles. Since I have never done this beIV, its a new thing to learn.

Dear David:
Watching Turner Classic Movies with Hosts Robert Osbourne & Ben Mankiewicz is like gettiing inII the science of watching movies. The quality level of the old classic movies from golden eras of moviemaking in Hollywood, California & worldwide is second II none. Plus the introductions & commentaries by the hosts, guests, & guest programmers is amazing. Students of art & film really get to know the artisans & crews quite up close. They learn not just the good about films, but about all of the pratfalls & deals/compromises that must be made to get a film(s) II market.
Exuding Class,

This sounds like an exciting show. The Shaw Conference Centre is hosting student works of art in its pedway. Now patrons of this fine establishment can see the rich pool of talent we have IV art in this fine city. Knowing then that Edmonton has many generations of artisans ready to flourish & make this a great artistic Capital of the Province. paRTnership Gallery is a great business model example!

Her granddaughter is in Playschool over in China & is thriving. Grandma or "Nana" is as an ex-teacher (University of Alberta 1968, B. Ed.) thrilled beyond anything IV her. I applaud the tenacity & forebearance of your Her Majesty's Government of Alberta in bringing in tough fines IV distracted driving starting September Ist, MMXI. These positive initiatives to ban things like cell phone calls, texting, reading & other distractions started with a fine rate of $172.00. This is both fair & justified, I personally think that with these new laws, folks will pay more attention to their driving in school zones. This of course will increase the safety of the students overall & thus decrease the worry of students, parents, teachers about children's ability to safely negotiate contact with the ground in areas where drivers may cross with walkers. Eg.: Crosswalks at school zones.

I am glad to see the postal strike is ending. I for one favour making posties "essential workers", as I feel the mail must go through. I am most greatful II my Member of Parliament, Laurie Hawn & the rest of Steve Harper's Conservative Majority ramming this back to work bill through. Canada Post employees are paid much better than ther counterparts in private courier company's. They need an education in the fact that the world isn't just Monday-Friday anymore & should be happy with their pay rates.
Students of business need to learn that the imposed settlement (although less than what Canada Post was offering) was fair & very much in line with other collective bargaining agreements. Unions should still have th right to exist & bargain, but I am glad the Government has broken the back of this CUPW union. They waste so much of their members dues on socialist, almost communistic pinko causes & their inflated salary's, its ludicrous!

I am assuming that the University of Calgary, the oil industry, the Calgary Flames Hockey Club & his family are in mourning. After a valiant battle with prostrate cancer, Harley Hotchkiss died recently at the age of LXXXIII (83.) That is why my hockey style of introductory title is appropriate. Mr. Hotchkiss was a generous patron II the University of Calgary's Hotchkiss Brain Institute, & many other fine charitable endeavours. He led the Calgary Flames through tough times as an owner & was instrumental in bringing the team over from Atlanta & its Stanley Cup victory. He stuck with it through thick & thin, even saving it from bankruptcy. Mr. Hotchkiss has been loyal to the University of Calgary as well. His cash raising & donating efforts have let many scienific experiements & analysis be done II improve neurological functioning & aid in helping in the recovery of brain-injured persons.

Last night I was babysitting my niece & we were colouring with "Crayola" crayons. I heard of a satellite radio report of a child dying after choking on a crayon in Auckland, New Zealand a few months ago & this I guess has happened beIV. As we know, colouring & play is part of a child's normal development. But we must also keep in mind safety factors & ensure the child(ren) is/are aided as quick as possible if its found they have swallowed a crayon product. Or marker, pen, pencil or any substance. The faster they are treated, the less likely they are II suffer from ink &/or led poisoning.

Got to see former Major League Baseball Star Jose Canseco at the Edmonton Capitals Game last night. Playing & managing the Yuma Scorpions& he looks less bulky, but is still in great shape. It sure is great II see a former steroid user free & clear of "the juice" & any other poisons. Jose is now speaking out against drug use & is playing IV "the love of the game." Hey he made it to the Major Leagues, he has nothing II prove.
Seems odd that a drug user & giver to others is trying to reshape himself inII a role model & reformed man in order to influence students of the game & young players. Its a good message that Jose is sending out II kids & I IV on applaud him IV trying. The Capitals are a very good family team, Capitals Owner Mr. Daryl Katz in letting the kids run around the bases after the gamemakes them feel as if they are truly part of the game experience. If students of all ages & their family members want II have fun this summer, as well as a healthy physical activity, they should sign up IV fencing. Edmonton's west end features the En Garde Fencing Club on CLXVIIIth (168th) Street. In days of yore & in fairy tales with knights, dragons, & princesses, the concept of swordsmanship, honour, & fair play in these battles, a gentleman's game if you will was very important.
Well David, these values are taught & brought to the forefront at the En Garde Fencing Club. Quality instructors, the finest in foils & sabres, & only the "best of the best" in terms of safety & protective equipment. Thus ensuring that students & members of any age have no chance of an injury while in combator in one of their practice (or tournament) duels! Remember the best offense is a good defense (& vice versa.)

Dear David:
On this the Summer Solstice & my brother's XXXIVth birthday, I find myself agreeing most vociferously with Mindelle Jacobs. It seems II me ludicrous that we spend only ten thousand a year per child on Early Child Head Start Programs & yet at the same time we spend C (100) thousand a year to incarcerate maximum security federal prisoners. If we paid $14.75 x 4 Canadian Funds, we could get four needles for Clifford Olson, Paul Bernardo, Russell Williams & Robert Pickton to each have a permanent nap. That would immediately free up CCCC (400) thousand for Head Start Programs.
Running for Public School Board here in Edmonton's north side last year, I met several students who were learning disabled, including aboriginal kids. Seems II me that if Head Start Programs were increased exponentially, we'd be able II have a better chance at getting these kids out of the cycle of violence, drugs, alcohol, & poverty at a higher rate. The faster we get II these unfortunate youngsters, the better off a chance we will have in giving them a solid educational foundation & therefore the better a chance they will turn into productive members of society!

On June XIth, a Mr. Leo Blass of Redmond, Washington aged XCIX (99) proved the adage that "you are never to old to learn." He graduated with an Associates or Bachelor's Degree in General Studies from Eastern Oregon University. In the horrid era of the Depression, Leo was forced in MCMXXXII (1932) II take a logging job for about $150.00 a month from a relative because he just couldn't make it for himself & his family economically on the $80.00 a month he was earning. As a result, he dropped out, but the school contacted him & he took a few classes & had then just enough credits to earn his Degree. Turning C (100) on August IIIrd, Leo will not enter inII any new career opportunities his Degree status now prooffers him. Dear David:
Chuck Adler is right on education. He shows just how great folks from Winnipeg are. He's right in expressing concern about students & other rioters causing horrible damage & bodily injuries last night in the great city of Vancouver, British Columbia. Students & others who did not participate may now get the idea that its okay to destroy & maim others & their property's because they see it live, on television, & all over the internet. Well its not, what if folks (say even a student) had been killed. Think of how badly those rioters would have felt. As for Police Chief Jim Chu & Mayor Gregor Robertson, those II ought to be forced out of office immediately. Showing students that when elected II & appointed to public offices you do nothing, then why are Vancouver taxpayers paying you? As IV the Boston Bruins & their fans, they outplayed, outgunned, outmatched, & outmanouvered the Vancouver Canucks at every turn. They (including their student fans) showed that they knew the values of sportsmanship & deserved the Stanley Cup more. Note: NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman didn't deserve the horrible treatment he received from fans in the arena. It lacked dignity & respect, Gary was just doing his legally required job in congratulating the winning team.
Chuck is right again in assessing the Globe & Mail's Margaret Wente column on the lack of academia time in American post-secondary institutions. The tacit agreements wherein Professors give the students very little to do. Chuck says that students only study about XII (12) hours a week (or less) with some only hitting the books for V hours a week or less & only XXX (30) hours a week of classroom time. That is quite horrid.
When I went to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) for my Marketing Certificate in MCMXIV-MCMXV (1994-95), then transferred II Grant MacEwan College (now University) towards getting a full Business Diploma from MCMXV-MCMXVII (1995-97), I had to study a lot more hours per week. Plus when I completed the trifecta of studying & got a Bachelor of Administration Degree (Honours) from Athabasca University in December MCMXCIX (1999), I still had to study & put in many hours. This despite the fact that it was a correspondence University & was self-paced. I still had to talk by email & phone with my Professors twice a week, I was also required II attend the Edmonton Campus of the school twice a month to see advisors that kept me on the right track. I also took all of my exams there in person, & had to attend my in class courses there. In person, not by remote control where I could just "phone in" my academic performance. I had II work to earn every credit, I had to study & be in class well over XL (40) hours a week combined. Plus I held down a part time job.
When I decided II go & become the first person in Alberta history II get a second C (100) High School Credits & therefore also the first to be granted a second Regular High School Diploma, I had II earn every credit honestly. Studying, without cheating, & with a full on effort. Hence my Public School Board run slogan: "CC Credits, II Diplomas, I'll Work Twice As Hard IV You." Having my learning disability of Aspberger's Syndrome or high functioning autism makes the challenges I faced in learning even harder. But I will not cheat, I will not give Convocation Lectures like certain University of Alberta Professor's & not give proper source accreditation. Chuck Adler got II be the broadcaster he is with hard work, honesty, & integrity. I can truly say I got my academic credentials the exact same way!
I'd Like II Give A Shout Out II Bill Good & CKNW Radio Vancouver For Their Excellent Riot Coverage & Its Horrid Aftermath,
Rory

Yesterday I was delighted II be invited by my opponent & victor in Ward A, Trustee Cheryl Johner II share in the celebrations of National Aboriginal Day at the Edmonton Public School Board meeting. Both with a delightful meal of bannock & other aboriginal delicacies, as well as a display of music, tribal dances & costumes, as well as prayer blessings in several aboriginal tongues.
Topping it all off was a welcome from the Board II the elcers & aboriginal audience members at the meeting itself. As well as the singing of Oh Canada in Cree (this translates II Ta Kanata.) The oration by the female singer was beautiful. The inflection & pitch was just right. Cree I must say is a hauntingly beautiful language.
Then there was remarks by Board members, & aboriginal staff & students in regards II the inclusivity of aboriginal education. Trustees then exchanged gifts with some of the students & teachers, then a lovely piece of aboriginal artwork was presented II Superintendent Edgar Schmidt. I must say that it was truly an honour to drink all of this in. We have a Board that is on the right track IV minority awareness & cultural understanding!

The quality of Her Majesty's Government of Alberta's Royal Alberta Museum never ceases II amaze me. A fun summer exhibition IV students who enjoy year round learning is "Creatures of the Abyss." It runs from June XIth-September XIth, & features immaculate & detailed displays of our precious ecosystem that is under the world's oceans, seas, & other tributaries. Its amazing, we humanoids have gone all the way II the moon & back & yet we do not know nearly anything about what lies beneath the depths of our own bodies of water. Believe me David, if you take Mrs. Principal Janet Hancock & your kids there, you'll be blown away at how much there is II learn!

Dear David:
My fantastic former Chemistry & Biology Teacher Mr. Derk Vaneerden at Edmonton Christian High School would definitely agree with this. Around my mother's & my apartment building, they are spraying the trees, shrubs, & other plant & flora life with pesticides today to prevent insect invasions. While these chemicals are definitely needed to ensure decent looking lawns & plants that grow well, they can be quite harmful II the environment. We were given notice last night of this spray being performed with the contracted company so we ensured all of our windows & doors were shut tightly. We also made sure II shut off our air conditioners so that chemical pesticide laden air would not enter our suite. Not only is this good IV my safety as I have weak lungs, but it ensures my feline son James Redwing & my mother June (the cat's grandmother) also do not get sick.
Be sure & take a lesson from the esteemed Mr. Vaneerden, play it smart & play it safe around chemicals. If you must be around them (say in a classroom setting) handle them with extreme caution. Be up to date on the latest hazards & safety data sheets so you know of the risks. Also wear the best of the best in terms of safety equipment to ensure your body & brain are protected strongly!

By even entertaining the idea of moving J.H. Picard Elementary-High School in the Edmonton Catholic Schools system over II the confines of Silverberry & suburbia, Catholic adminisrators are cutting their own Franco-Albertan throats. IV the francais language to survive & even thrive in Edmonton, we need J.H. Picard to stay where it is, across the riviere from downtown. Still however centralized enough IV francais etudiants II be able II get II it from across Edmonton.
While I am certainment that Silverberry needs its own ecole, taking J.H. Picard away from XCIXth Street will lessen the impact IV the Catholic system II turn out fine bilingual Albertans. Dear David:
Social Studies students & post-secondary students of history will note the fantastic news that His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, The Duke Of Edinburgh & spouse of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The IInd turned XC (90) this past Friday. The Duke has been a loyal spouse of Her Majesty since MCMXLVII (1947) when he married her & she was still just a Princess under the great stewardship of her father, the valiant World War II King George The VIth. He has performed his royal duties ably & while advising his good wife, he has never sought the spotlight. He loves her & respects her. He has shown his great intelligencia off by serving in the British Royal Navy & many different military capacity's. He has also served the Crown through his many chosen charitable endeavours & has now earned a retirement of glory & dignity. So perhaps it is fitting with his great naval skills that his wife granted him the title of Lord High Admiral, or Head of the Navy. Certainly a XCth birthday gift that the Duke appreciates, as will students & connoiseurs of British & Commonwealth Naval History. Way II go You Royal Highness!

Dear David:
My feline son James Redwing Cat Koopmans likes to of course nip & bite a little. This is of course part of his hunter instinct. He nipped at my feet & legs a bit too hard & so I changed him on veterinary advice from a Vet over the phone II a diet with a little bit less protein. I've also gotten a special new dietary cat food in dry format II make him less agressive. Veterinary students will tell you David that changing up his food intake under careful instruction & medical guidance will make things better for not just your pet. But IV the folks he has agreed II let live with him, namely his "Nana" or grandmother & myself. We don't want James to hurt himself, or be tempted to hurt others. I & many other pet owners just want II make life better IV him as he makes life better fur us.
I am also going II head to the Doctor IV a checkup as I have been feeling under the weather lately. The less healthy I am, the less able I will be able to take care of my feline son & make sure he is growing up strong & purroud. Get medical treatment if you are bitten hard by a cat, including bandages all the way through rabies & other shots if necessary. Students growing up with pets in their home need II be aware that the better they look after them as kids, the smarter & better they will be able II manage human children in adult relationships of their own later in life.

Students & the Ross Shepherd Students Union must be given a salute. Last week they raised $3,400.00 IV cancer research at the Cross Cancer Institute. Teachers agreed II be put in dunk tanks & have their mustaches & heads shaved off IV cancer. They might even get more than the $8,500.00 they made last year. I am proud of Students Union President Trisha Chow. Cancer crosses all age groups & all boundaries. Its a horribly ravishing disease. All the way fron little kids II seniors get it, even students do. So as a result, I cannot think of anything more appropriate than having students setting up & having a successful fundraiser II fight it, fight it hard!

Here at the Castledowns Branch EPL is another rather unique initiative. As part of their Castledowns Book Club, seniors, parents, students & anyone who is interested can listen II Audio books in one of the side rooms. This is a great idea as family's can sit together. Students with reading problems, folks who have temporarily lost cognitive function due II say an accident or fighting a disease can relax in comfort & still have their minds educated by listening to the narration of another human voice. Library patrons have told me that grandkids & kids of school age like II bring in their parents/grandparents/guardians with them so they can show them how well they can read on their own. As you can imagine, the adult doing the listening takes extreme pride in this.
By having the folks in side rooms with the literacy difficulty's, they can hear the speaker (either on tape or live) & then practice enunciating & gaining basic diction back. They can take their time, be in a relaxed atmosphere & be surrounded by family & friends. Learning languages can be difficult, but having to relearn them & pronunciations that after a lifetime of speaking have been lost is even worse. I say bravissimo to the Castledowns EPL & other EPL staffs IV this most excellent initiative!

Being at the Change-In-Command & Swearing In of Edmonton's new Police Chief was quite a great educational experience. As an outside hire, Rod Knecht will bring new ways of making positive command decisions that he learned from his time in the prestigious Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) & their fantastic Red Serge Uniforms. I certainly wish Rod much success.
I also must insist upon giving Mayor Stephen Mandel a shout out. His highlighting of Rod's daughters knowing the importance of education. Steve mentioned in his remarks that one daughter was attending University & the other was just finishing off her Grade X in Ontario IV the year her father had transferred there.
I was personally ecstatic to talk II these lovely ladies afterwards at the reception in the north foyer of City Hall. I learned that the older daughter went to the esteemed Carleton University IV a year & has now successfully transferred her credits II the University of Alberta IV Year II of her studies. Her younger sister is excited about attending Grade XI back here in Alberta. Its sure nice II know what great people Rod & Mrs. Chief Rod Knecht are & that they are committed II working hard IV Edmonton's citizens & that their daughter's receive the best education possible!

I cannot believe how awesome a radio station 96.3 Capital FM is. Their Wednesday, June VIIIth Radiothon from 5:30am-7pm on the Santa Moretti Ship at West Edmonton Mall (WEM) IV the Northern Alberta Make-A-Wish Foundation is stellar. Giving sick & disadvantaged kids some hope IV the future is truly a noble goal. Anything that helps makes kids lives better an only be great. The medium of radio is much more intimate & so much more conducive II giving. It makes (potential) donors think more about the charity they are giving II & how great it is. We need a strong focus group on exercise like they have in Saskatchewan. The Saskatchewan Physical Educational Association (SPEA) promotes healthy body's & healthy minds. The more students, staff, teachers & their family's eat nutrionally, tied in with regular doses of exercise/physical activity, the healthier they will be. Dear David:
I believe the Senate Page, um a Miss Brigette DePape I believe (& a University student to wit) had every right II protest The Right Honourable Gentleman IV Calgary-Southwest's agenda & that of his Tory government. But for her II break the sanctity of the Senate & interrupt Her Majesty's Representative, The Right Honourable His Excellency David Johnston in the Senate Chamber as he read the Throne Speech on behalf of the Queen & her democratically elected Prime Minister was intolerable.
Maybe if she had resigned her post first, then gone outside on the hill or in the public foyer with the sign, that would have been more than acceptable, even the Prime Minister would & could not stand against the right of peaceful protest. I applaud Miss DePape IV exercising her rights & profiling her work as both a page & as a student. I respect her right II protest, & would gladly have engaged in a debate against her in which I would defend the PM & his governing party.
Mr. Harper won a Majority Government on Monday, May IInd, which gives him the right to be in power until May IInd, MMXVI. I for one strongly approve of this Conservative Majority & believe Miss DePape needs to be reminded that every governing party has "an agenda" as she so qualifies it. If the PM really had a secret "hidden agenda" he would have enacted it by now Miss DePape. If you were truly a student of history & knew your raw politics cold as I do, you'd know that this Tory team has been in office since February VIth, MMVI, they have no hidden agenda.
Miss DePape, you might have decided to chuck your job as you were gone in III weeks from it & your student position anyway. But your lucky I am not the Speaker of the Senate, I would have put you in jail as a security risk.
There Is A Time & A Place IV Everything,
Rory
