Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

Federal Health Minister Leona Alukkaq, PC, MP deserves a lot of support & backing IV her new initiative II toughen regulations in terms of led content in toys. Toys are where (in conjunction with playing) a child's mind first begins to get stimulted. Causing him/her to want II learn & then enter the eduational system. So putting increased "parts per million (ppm)" on the toys regulative numbers makes sense for their proper physical & cognitive welfare on the start of their eduational journeys.

Venturing Into Kidhood And/Or Young Adulthood

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin., Lois Hole Public Library Terminal #XI, Edmonton, Alberta

November XXVIIIth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Check out the Kids Section David if your ever here in the Lois Hole Branch EPL. The kids are playing tag now, but confined to an area with mats & supervision. But the administrators are geniuses here. To prevent the kids from running around the entire branch crazily & disturbing folks with a need IV study silence areas, they make a game of it & the kids who run around w/o making any noise gets points towards free extra days that are fine free towards reading their books.

They also get points each & every time they tag another person & say "your it." Next they get a point IV each lap they run around in the assigned play area. The kids keep track counting their own & eachother's points. The more points they get, the more free EPL stuff they get in terms of prizes. In this way the games are still fun, but the kids are taught to be quiet & mathematical skills of counting & literary skills of writing those computations &/or figures out on paper. Plus the folks in Quiet Study areas really appreciate that the kids can be kids & still learn, while at the same time, they can be adults who learn. They also learn to appreciate the sublime adult supervision that the Lois Hole Branch EPL provides. Superb adult role models IV kids.

Rory

Dear David:

I say congrats II the Greater Los Angeles Unified School District in Los Angeles, California IV having the initiative through their superintendent & facilty administrative staff for telling their overlords to essentially "f**k off." By accepting monies that were offered from NBC Television School Initiative Broadcasts, they improved schools that literally had no infrastructure replacement in L-LXXV (50-75 years) (or even more.) Working IV the kids of the streets of Los Angeles instead of putting cash in the pockets of corrupt bureaucrats & politicos. Quite frankly, its the right thing to do & I am proud of them.

Important slogans to be sure: "We're bigger than our buildings." Meaning of course the wealth of knowledge & friendliness towards learning inside.

"We share stories." Meaning of course that there is a team effort by all staff & customers in the library branch to learn as a group & individually & garner wisdom & knowledge towards becoming a great citizen later on. Ie: Choosing to be a full time parent, or darting out on the right career path.

A "Fine"ly Instituted Idea

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin., Lois Hole Public Library Terminal #XI, Edmonton, Alberta

November XXVIIth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Get anyone you know, all family's with students of ages down here to this EPL Branch, or any of the branches in the EPL chain. Until 6:00:01PM MST today, library branches citywide are accepting donations to the Edmonton Food Bank. Just bring in one non-perishable foodstuff (or item) & the library will knock $25.00 off any fine balance you have. This is a novel & great concept. Giving say a can of delicious tuna for a poor family has got II be a lot cheaper than having to pay off any fines owed.

Personally, I am really proud of the EPL Branch Library & T. Gavigan, head administrator of the EPL system IV instituting this program. Food Banks are constantly overrun what with the economy & the busy time of the holiday season. It can be a great time IV family's, but alas it can also be stressful. Especially with the need to make sure family's & their kids are fed, sheltered, educated, & clothed properly. All of these needs are exponentially difficult on tight finances, of course thus making the ability to make sure all the kids in the family have a Christmas present all the harder.

Hurry In David Folks Are Starving,

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I cannot tell you how proud I am of the little III year old boy in Vancouver, British Columbia yesterday. Held hostage at knifepoint by some crazy nutjob IV about VIII hours & he didn't even cry. He didn't even cry when he was cut in the face. I mean talk about a brave little gaffer. His mama when she saw him in the Ambulance must have been so proud! I know I am, & just feel that the Police, Ambulance, & arresting authorities did a wonderful job coordinating with the staff at the Community Centre, & with the local media II make sure the situation didn't get too out of hand, or spiral outside the walls of the room where the boy hostage & suspect were barricaded. This is one little boy who thankfully will have a chance II grow up. Hopefully, the suspect can get the medical & mental health help that he needs & will be put in a locked down facility where he can be safe & kept properly medicated around the clock.

Dear David:

Its hard II believe that it was XLVII (47) years ago today in Dallas, Texas that XXXVth (35th) United States President John F. Kennedy, Democrat-Massachusetts was shot II death, thus necessitating the swearing in on Air Force One of Vice-President Lyndon B. Johnson, Democrat-Texas as the XXVIth (36th) President. With the time stamp on the death being recorded at 2:38pm Eastern Standard Time, thats 1:38PM Central Standard Time, some XXXVIII (38) minutes ago by legendary CBS News Anchor Walter Cronkite.

Students must learn that even if you disrespect President Kennedy as I and many others did, you must learn to have respect for that Office. Even Richard Nixon his MCMLX (1960) opponent for the Presidency stated that folks should respect that Kennedy was the President & thereIV his power & his messages should be listened to with great care as they were historical commentaries.

Last night on CNN's "Larry King Live", Dr. Jill J. Biden, English Professor was on with her husband, the XLVIIth (47th) Vice-President Of The United States, Joseph R. Biden, Democrat-Delaware. I congratulate her for her long career in teaching & educating young minds. I also congratulate the VP for insisting she keep her career, despite the fact she is arguably very busy with her husband's political calendar, & her legal title as "Second Lady Of The United States." She is a respectable teacher, wife, mother, & IInd Lady simultaneously & I would say performs her State duties & functions very gracefully. Plus she keeps the VP in line & an even keel, & as he was a Senator for XXXVIII (38) years before assuming the Second In Command Post under XLIVth (44th) President Barack H. Obama, Democrat-Illinois on January XXth, MMIX, he knows the political game & establishment well. For Dr. (& Mrs.) Jill J. Dear David:

Defense Minister Peter Mackay & Prime Minister Stephen Harper have it right in the Afghani Battle Theatre. We have been at war long enough. Its time to have our soldiers teach Afghan battle troops not just the "Art Of War", but to give them the teaching tools they need IV peace. This is why the Executive Decision made in conjunction with Leader Of The Opposition & Leader Of The Federal Liberals, Professor Michael Ignatieff was also correct.

By giving diplomatic & peacekeeping assistance past our June XXXth, MMXI pullout date to an extended new date of December XXXIst, MMXIV only makes sense. The stronger that Afghani officials in the Karzai Government are in terms of negotiating, the faster they will be able to resolve civil conflicts. As a result, there will be less deaths then overall. I sure wish them much success in this new military diplomatic attache endeavour.

My extreme congrats must go to the New York Educational Trust & the New York City Board Of Education. Their extemely smart move to team up with Public Television & make a documentary with filmmaker Ken Burns on the United States Woman's Suffragette movement was very adept. Alberta students & students worldwide need to know how bad things used to be for women & how awful it was for them that they couldn't vote. Both in the United States & in Canada it wasn't until roughly the 1920's women would get equal rights. As a man, this truly sickens me (as it should students.) On this Rememberance Day & My XXXVIth (36th) Birthday, I just saw some prophetic words by Judge Judith Scheindlin on television last night. She say thats all American kids should have "the right to a free education." I totally agree with her there. But she also stated that if those same kids were caught planning say a mass murder of their fellow students by weapons or by blowing up their school, then "the State should have the right to take away any chance these kids would have of ever completing their education." I also agree with that.

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

Kudos II St. Gabriel Storefront Cybernetics Catholic (Public) School in St. Albert & all schools in the Province today. Most of these schools are holding their Rememberance Day Services today at about 10am, 10:30am, & 11am. This is I am sure truly appreciated by Canadian Veterans of all wars & today's active duty servicemen & women in both peacekeeping & actual combat theatres. As a man born on Rememberance Day MCMLXXIV (1974) come XXXVI (36) years ago tomorrow, I always am glad to participate in a Rememberance Service every year. These fine folks were injured &/or killed in combat operations, the very least we can do is hold in our hearts a full day of thanks once a year.

By holding their school services on November Xth, schools can allow their students to have a day off the next day with family & friends (& presumably the XIIth as well) to meet up with veterans & attend services of honourarium throughout the Province, & as a matter of fact, throughout the Dominion. So buy a poppy, take time out to remember, watch a war film. Watching these films will show folks how neccessary war is at certain points. It will also show them how stupid it is & how we as Canadians & United Nations World Citizens need II encourage peace instead of killing. Killing is just retarded. Quite frankly, I say its better that we all live in harmony.

I must certainly applaud retired Math Professor Werner Liedtke. He takes the time to play with building blocks with his grandsons so that they can have fun learning about shapes & numbers. These visual aides make great projects IV building things like buildings, and castles. Plus they let Dr. Werner's grandsons gain a real appeciation for basic mathematical principles & engineering skills. Fun projects with blocks include building a structure, then asking the child(ren) II visualize it after seeing you build it. Thats called "bonding." Another project is to get the kids to chat about what they are building (as they build it.) In this way they will become even more excited about mathematical problems, as well as the overall experience of actually learning.

Dear David:

Avoid exam stress by arriving at the exam site early. Reread each question carefully so you can cojutate and carefuly consruct a well informed answer(s.) Write down formulas/equations on the scrap paper provided by the exam monitor to ensure you have a fair & equal chance at passing the exam, doing this will also help you remember formulas that you were not totally sure of. Pace yourself and remember that if you have 1 hour to complete a test and 60 Multiple Choice Questions, then you have 1 minute to spend on each. Read each question through and fill in the ones you know the answer for 100% and then you'l have more time to work on the remaining questions.

Graciously,

Rory

Dear David:

According to Statistics Canada, the High School dropout rate the last XX (20) years has been slashed by almost 1/2 from 340,000 to 191,000. So from roughly XVI.VI to VIII.V aged XX-XXIV do not have a High School Diploma. If I with an auditory disablity can obtain II High School Diplomas, then an 85-90% completion rate for these young adults is not too far out of reach.

Even in good economic times, those without a High School Diploma have on average nearly double the unemployment rate & earn $70.00 less per week then their colleagues who have a Diploma. It really is food IV thought. Getting a job & holding onto it at all costs is easier the more educated a person you are.

Respectfully,

Rory

Dear David:

Kids can learn a thing or two from now retired Environment Minister Of Canada, the Hon. Jim Prentice. He said he would stay in politics IV only X years or less & is quitting at IX years. He ran what Aboriginal Affairs & Northern Development, Industry, & now the Environment departments & had not one hint of scandal. Truly amazing indeed. This is a family man & politician I can respect. He kept the Ethics Commissioner apprised step by step of his contract negotiations & is being enough to stay on as a backbench MP until Prime Minister Harper & the Federal Conservative Calgary Centre-North Constituency Association can hold a proper replacement candidate nomination meeting.

Dear David:

While I am not even close to a fan of wrestling or World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), I have to admire its stars: "Hornswoggle", "Eve", "The Big Show", & "Kofi Kingston" for taking the time & effort out of their training schedules to encourage kids & all of their fans II read. This is how these wrestlers stay on top of their game. They are showing that they exercise both their minds & their bodies.

Dear David:

I definitely applaud your consideration move of forcing kids to not be able to quit school until age XVII (17), up from the current XVI (16). It definitely is a step in the right direction towards increasing the possibility of those students at least completing Grade XI (11). If they are only one Grade instead of II Grades short, they will then more likely see the value in going hard & fast & be me more willing to go and finish off Grade XII (12).

By showing kids the light at the end of the educational tunnel, they will then more than likely want II increase their carrer opportunities by attending post-secondary institution(s). Ie: Grant MacEwan University (GMU), The Northern Alberta Institute Of Technology (NAIT), etc.

Sincerely,

Rory

Dear David:

Perhaps it is only fitting, but on the night of the United States Mid-Term Elections, all of the Catholic & Public School Trustees-Elect are being sworn in tonight or tomorrow at their inaugural meetings. I wish them nothing but success, especially my Ward A Public opponent, Trustee-Elect Mrs. Cheryl Johner. May they be properly guided by the administrative staffers that aid them. May they also be given the proper facts & figures in terms of raw data and surveys so that they can make properly informed choices for our schoolchildren.

Dear David:

I must truly congrastulate Mrs. Barbara Williamson, The Editor Of Letters IV The Edmonton Journal. Her focus IIday in allowing the aboriginal kids who were affected by the school in their district opening a year late was a masterstroke. Its not the family's, & administrators who are affected by the delay, but the students themselves who are on the ground, book learnin' every single day, Monday-Friday.

Mrs. Williamson is very adept at making the students feel like the stars of the column commentaries. They get their names & ages spelled right out. Plus they are put in one Super Section of the Letters Page II give their agony over the rough way in which their educational needs were put on hold.

Its Journalism At Its Finest,

Dear David:

A few days go, The Edmonton Journal went to interview kids at schools that suffered a drop off in attendance due II new schools coming online. Some of the kids say that partially empty schools are great because they can learn more. I 100% fundamentally disagree. The fuller a school is, the more livelier it is. Plus there is more chance IV social interaction between students both in & out of class. These social interactions allow kids to grow & expand their horizons. Some will be good & some will be bad but at least the kids will know what they can expect out of real life once they leave educational establishments.

School Of Thought,

Rory
