"And Thank You To The Member For The Question!"

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin., #6, 14504-108 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T5N 1G8

May XXXIst, MMXVI

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

In over 1,500 plus question periods in 36 plus years of watching them at the Alberta Legislature, you begin to notice things & student groups who attend there might pick up on this as well. In my 2,015th visit to the Legislature Bvilding yesterday, I keep on noticing the "& thank you to the member for the question" by the New Democratic cabinet ministers to opposition questions. With the most flagrant user being the Hon. Sarah Hoffman, B. A., B. Sc., B. Ed., M. Ed., MLA, Deputy Premier & Minister of Health, New Democratic, Edmonton-Glenora & my MLA. If the cabinet ministers stuck with just "Mr. Speaker" or "thank you Mister Speaker" & eliminated the portion where they thanked the member for the question (& then proceed to not answer it in most cases anyway), that would save 2-5 minutes I estimate each of the four Question Period days. Which would allow for say 1-3 more questions & responses. I've timed it on my stopwatch hundreds of times. It has now become a stall tactic & I don't single out Rachel or Her Majesty's Government of the New Democratic persuasion of 53 weeks as the previous Progressive Conservative administrations also did this. Of course the best thing about QP is its never a repeat episode!

Just A Thought,

Rory

May XXXth, MMXVI

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minixter of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

Michigan returns to the spotlight today with one last quote from Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence. Brenda's focus is on making sure that kids in foster care situations get a decent quality education, the same as any children in households with parents/guardians.

"Foster care school-aged children deserve the same access to a quality education as everyone else."

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

As the only Member of Congress to ever be endorsed by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (an excellent endorsement I'd say), Congressman John Conyers of Michigan talks about giving every child an equal start in the educational world. In this way, they will have a better chance at an improved quality of life for themselves & for future generations.

"Our education needs to begin early to ensure that ever child starts the race of life from the same line."

May XXVIIIth, MMXVI

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

Today, Executive Dissertations has Illinois Congressman Randy Hultgren explaining what he feels is a most pressing issue for students. The need for families & parents/guardians to be actively involved in their child or children's education. Doing this through a healthy home environment will in Randy's thinking translate into greater academic success in the classroom.

"Parents & families should play the primary role in a child's education. Without support at home, efforts in the classroom will fall short of providing students with the best possible chance to succeed."

Rory

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

From Congresswoman Kathy Castor of Florida, a remark on the shortage of doctors being trained at Floridian medical schools. Certainly a situation we are facing in Alberta & many other jurisdictions are worldwide, especially when you consider many Albertans don't even have a family physician.

"Florida has about 20 medical residents per 100,000 residents, well below the national average of 37 medical residents per 100,000 residents. This has aided in creating a looming doctor shortage & if we don't begin to tackle this, especially with our state's growing population, our neighbors will soon find it very challenging to access a doctor."

Jackie's issue of focus in her comments to Steve is student debt & financial relief.

"Students who were defrauded by Corinthian Colleges were just handed two enhanced options to deal with their student loan debt. These institutions should have never been allowed to prey on students & taxpayers, but at least we can prevent students from losing their futures to unforgivable debt."

Bully on former Tory MLAs Thomas Lukaszuk & Gene Zwozdesky for getting together to promote the fundraising dinner at the Maharaja Banquet Hall tonight for the Fort McMurray Red Cross Fund. Only $50.00 bucks a head, these two ex politicos are both teachers by profession so they are "teaching" students from Edmonton & around the province to buy in, enjoy a great meal & good company. Lets hope the event sells out & that the auction items get extremely high top bids so we can truly help Fort Mac & Wood Buffalo residents out! Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

We say goodbye to a broadcast legend in Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) News Correspondent Morley Safer tonight this one final Sunday night. Canadian by birth, only the world's greatest journalists make "60 Minutes", CBS News Magazine & Morley did so.

Before that, Morley reported for the superb Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) News & was also a newspaperman at various Ontario papers. Morley is that rare breed of journalist. Tough as nails & just as cantankerous as the late & great Mike Wallace (which if you knew Mike, you pretty much had to be.) This got him Mike's respect & made him stronger in his reportage.

From covering war to domestic issues, Morley knew journalism cold & it clearly showed in his professionalism. My favourite pieces of Morley's were when he discussed his love & hatred of art as they were so refined, so nuanced in style.
