Larry King Live Abdicates In Tributation

Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

They do no make quality broadcasters like Larry King anymore. He's stepping down at just the right time. LIII (53) years on the air, XXV (25) at CNN alone as host of Larry King Live. We must teach kids in language courses and students in broadcasting colleges such as NAIT that Mr. King has set a higher standard of oratory. First in newspapers, then radio & finally on CNN. Sort of like the late Tom Snyder & the still Correspondent Emeritus for CBS News' 60 Minutes, Mike Wallace.

Larry is LXXVI (76) years old & has two young sons and a wife who has faced depression troubles including a recent suicide attempt. Good IV Larry, he's putting his family first & making them more special then his career. Luckily he will still appear on the air with specials, documentaries and sports programming. Get students II watch his archival footage. Larry with his broadcast microphone circa MCMXXX's (1930's) on the desk has a way of making folks feel at ease. Kids can learn Larry's style & use that II conduct quality interviews inII the future.

Signing Off & Watch The Pictures As They Fly Through The Air,

Rory

Dear David:

A split decision in Edmonton Youth Court David. As a Q.C. you can appreciate the Judge's ruling that the teenagers who swarmed the Edmonton Police Service officer were provoked and wouldn't have surrounded him if their friend had not been punched. In the St. Gabriel School school grounds. Certainly the students should not have been yelling vitriol at the officers but the officers had no business being so violent towards the students/youths when they had tasered him already. Resulting in his incapacitation. The youths had given the officers their names after a mediated discussion, so in this situation the police were just too heavy handed.

Dear David:

Please encourage students to never IVget the value of this LXXXIV (84) year old lady. On July VIth, MMX, she'll have been in power LVIII (58) years & V (5) months. We must always remember that through trials and tribulations she has stood firm & devoted her whole life II service. From serving in the British Armed Forces as a valuable Royal Army mechanic, under her father His Majesty King George VIth as a morale booster until his death when she had II take command of the big chair at such a young age, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth IInd has been the finest of them all. She cannot & will not resign because she knows the Monarchy must survive at all costs.

Lets hope her journey II Canada is enjoyable & shows Canadians that she has never let them down & never will. Encourage students II look at the Monarchist League Of Canada & competing Republic nation state sites. They'll see that having a strong Monarch keeps this great Dominion on an even keel. It makes us better as citizens. We needed Her Majesty Queen Victoria to shape us IV July Ist, MDCCCLXVII (1867) & we need her great great granddaughter Queen Elizabeth to keep us going until she no longer as breath and His Royal Highness Prince Charles has to step us as the brave replacement to his mother as King. The Royals act as counterbalance II keep the politicians especially the Canadian Prime Minister of the day under control. This is healthy & should be encouraged strongly II future generations.

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I can only hope what with these sad columns on Fulton Place, Eastwood & others in their final days that students will always remember how great their old schools were. It was nice II see the old schools celebrated & lauded one last time as they stood down from being educational centres IVever. The way the teachers kept every tradition in place was stellar.

We can only hope that students, parents, staff and administrators carry on the excitement of learning and garnering knowledge in their new facility's. Knowledge is power & these retired old gems had lots of it. They gave their all II kids and adults alike. The least that can be done is that we must hope that thew community's that lost their schools will not die out.

June XXIXth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

That's a great move II allow Boards II pass their budgets for MMX-MMXI by November XXXth, MMX instead of the usual June XXXth, MMX David. Edmonton Catholic & Boards province wide needed a little extra space II breathe & the delay will allow their successor Boards what 6-7 weeks to scope out new funding alternatives and get a line on where cutbacks need to be made. Let us hope it helps alleviate stresses in the system.

Part of the problem David is infrastructure expansions by Catholic schools like St. Francis Xavier High & Archbishop Macdonald High when they already have perfectly serviceable gymnasiums and sports centres. Or, could have entered rental agreements with other school districts/community halls IV for facility's badly needing revenue I am sure at a much lower cost.

Exeunt,

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Well this is great news. There appears II be a recognition breakthrough going on in terms of aboriginal children that are buried in a forgotten graveyard. These fine students were buried just west of Red Deer near the old Red Deer Industrial School. I give kudos II the landowner IV having the class to preserve the site & it burial history. I must also say that its great that the Sunnybrook United Church is trying II make amends by finding out where the graves were & researching historical records so that aboriginal culture is not forgotten. Its definitely a great start.

The healing ceremonies on June XXXth, MMX starting at 11AM are a great idea. The Cree bands have been given a decent budget & venue II heal & remember the fallen students. These students had a hard life full of disease & despair. It is my considered opinion that they need II be remembered.

Graciously,

Dear David:

I know this matter is in the sovereign State of Oregon. But this doesn't mean we shouldn't help. I am becoming quite concerned IV the safety of Kyron Hormon a 7 year old boy missing & last seen by his school what III weeks ago. Please encourage Canadian School Boards II put up his picture on their websites. Also, please get people unfamiliar with United States Law Agency's such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to pass on thoughts and ideas that might help to their local Canadian investigative units such as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police so these strategies can be acted upon.

Also contact American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) affiliate KATU-TV anchor Steve Dunn in Portland, Oregon with any tips directly. His email is SteveD@Katu.Com & his newsroom can be called at 1-503-231-4264. One kid missing is II many. Lets help Kyron's family find him quickly & safely!

Dear David:

It is sad tht the Riverdale Kindergarten program was killed off. But surely combining Kindergarten & Grade One classes might have been a better option. In this way, the students coming online it the MMX-MMXI and future years might have a better chance & II years II bond with their teachers. Thus making them much stronger Grade II students. Plus the additional advantage of keeping them in the Riverview District &/or School Grid Zone.

Dear David:

I must congratulate Special Trustee Colin Kelly of Northland District #LXI (#61) on getting the Bishop Routhier School up & running. Even if its in a limited capacity, Trustee Kelly has done more in VI months then the old Northland Board had ever done. I of course recognize that it took a herculean team effort, but I am also amazed at the superb efforts of the older Grade VI students in wanting II help out & be an "example" to the younger kids by helping set up areas like the library.

What impresses me the most is that the excellent Edmonton Journal Sarah O'Donnell got students II talk & actually write down what they loved about their new school. Then they printed some of the comments. This was great because then the students become the story & not the lousy way in which the school opened due to bureaucratic laziness, incompetence & construction delays.

Lets hope the new school gets up II capacity soon. Hopefully there are no more worries & stresses IV too much longer over the unfinished playgrounds and play equipment.

Encouraging Words From Beijing

June XXVIIth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

It was truly nice II hear Beijing & Shanghai Communist News Agency's correct their error & admit that Pyongang & the North Koreans started the attack on June XXVth, MCML (1950) by incursion over the XXXVIIIth (38th) Parallel & absolve then XXXIIIrd (33rd) United States President Harry S. Truman, Democrat-Missouri for blame in starting up a "police action." I mean why wouldn't Harry not stop it in its tracks? He promised II do so after he saw the Soviet threat which emerged under President Josef Stalin.

To see that this fact is also being corrected in school texts is also encouraging. Yes there were many United States Presidents from Dwight Eisenhower to Richard Nixon who interfered in Asia to sustain (& create) wars IV their own political glories. Ie: The Gulf of Tonkin incident under Lyndon Baines Johnson. Its just nice to see that future of kids will be taught the right facts.

Note: As the Korean War was settled by an "armistice" & not a "surrender" in MCMLIII (1953) that means the war never "legally" or "technically" ended. So its been going on IV what LX (60) straight years. As it now enters Year LXI(61), I take no stance as to who(m) is winning it on the ground &/or politically.

Thanks Mr. Todd Babiak & you lovely wife Gina Loewen IV taking Avia & Esme II WWI & WWII battlefield monuments along the French coast. Religious Differentiation

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin.,Ward A, Edmonton Public School Trustee Candidate, #203, 8912-156 Street, Edmonton, Alberta T5R 5Z2

June XXVth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I certainly approve of Alberta Education's move II drop the forced teaching of religion curriculum. While I with a Christian background enjoyed Religious Meanings XX through Edmonton Christian High School (Public) & Religious Studies XV, XXV, XXXV through St. Gabriel Storefront Online Cyber School (Public/Catholic) in St. Albert: there are just students who are quite rightly uncomfortable about religion.

What I like is that parental rights are added in this Bill XLIV (44) equation. A parent's input is just as important as the student's. After all, it is they who decide when & where their child will attend school. With the open borders policy in Alberta, that could be anywhere.

It should be the child's prerogative II say when s/he is ready (or not) II learn about religious doctrines & tenets. That is, in tandem with their parent/guardian.

Dear David:

I thought in the court systems that attempted murder was XX (20) II life. Yet in the great province of Quebec, a woman is getting IV years in a Montreal jail cell IV hurting and abusing her VIII (8) children. While its terrible what he did, VI months for each child is not enough. I am sorry, but a sentence of X (10) years should have been laid out, then the mother should be put in a psychiatric facility the rest of her life. With proper cognitive function, she will be allowed II have safely controlled visits with her children. Thus ensuring no more incidents can occur.

The fathers of these kids need II step up and support them now. Quebec's Child Services Division needs to make sure their daily needs are met. There is no excuse IV beating children. I would argue that since there are VI fathers II the VIII kids, that they and their extended family's have an obligation to give these neglected and tortured kids a fresh start.

June XXIVth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

This little Elliott Littlewood-Snyder is sure one cool kid. He's at the University Of Alberta wearing a brain activity monitor which studies why toddlers and kids can react out, &/or have temper tantrums. So he's doing research in the hospital, and that research is II play & let Psychologist Sandra Weibe & her Psychology team go to work studying machine data of his brain patterns. Its like a scam job, he plays in the hospital, doing what every kid should do, play & be normal. In addition he gets praise from his family, friends and the researchers. I mean hook my brain up to this device David if I could just play all day.

The charts can tell when a subject or kid is lashing out in a reaction format. It can also tell when they are "controlling their behaviour." Truly I would say a remarkable tool, it lets people see how a young brain starts off & where it will begin the process of learning as Elliott & other kids begin entering say playschool &/or kindergarten.

Dear David:

I do no really like the Sector Planning Review Process. If you want to send in your thoughts by mail you wind up sending it to a bureaucrat in Ottawa. Quite frankly, what in the hell do Ottawa bureaucrats and the great province of Ontario have II do in deciding what schools in Edmonton & Alberta IV that matter will be reconfigured &/or closed?

The conversations are in a style thats rigged II treat you like a baby. They group all of our questions together where they "feel" that they "best fit." Then they only answers groups of these questions in blocks. Both at forums and the internet, thus ensuring that no form of question &/or input gets a straight answer.

IAP2 Code Of Ethics

June XXIIIrd, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progessive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I understand that there is an IAP2 Code of Ethics IV Sector Planning David. But why is the process even being gone through when Edmonton Public's entire administrative goal is to close schools, come hell or high water? Yes its partly due II mismanagement of facility's and not pumping cash in them IV repairs, ie: Eastwood School.

But its also due II the fact the whole process is rigged. If it weren't, why are there LXXVI
(76) schools on the MMX-MMXI tentative chopping block? This isn't ethics, its the J.R. Ewing style of looking ethical but being shady.

I. I see no respect IV communities. Respect means keeping the schools open, not shutting them down & forcing family's out. Seems like every Board of Trustees faces this. How?

II. There is no openness. The administration is only releasing information it feels is relevant II the public. You want transparency, release it all. What has the admin. department got to hide?

III. There is no public role definition. Members of the public are allowed II speak, but they are not allowed II make any of the decisions. Why?

Dear David:

Gosh Heidi Janz of the University Of Alberta is one smart lady. She wins an Award of Distinction IV her efforts in disability studies. As a person with a disability myself of autism, I am really get where Heidi is coming from. She doesn't see people in palliative care as a burden. No she sees them as having entered a new stage in life & bully II her IV that. She was nominated by friends at the University Of Manitoba. To be ethical & treat disabled folks about palliative ethics & that we all have the right II a great life. Now thats a person who is respected.

Last night I attended (as an invited guest) the celebration of life of Gary McPherson. He was crippled from the neck down and wound up being an Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta. This man was in hospital for XXXIV (34) years of his life. Yet he did more in his life for Albertans, both disabled & non disabled then many other people. Here's a guy who was on a ventilator what VIII (8) hours a day and he ran IV PC Leader & Premier. A truly great egg. I did some volunteer campaigning for Gary myself in the leadership election. Phone calling & even donated to the campaign. He was a great student of the world. He didn't judge me IV my autism & I didn't judge him IV being in a wheelchair. He was a real guy with a heart of gold.

Note: It was nice of Premier Edward Michael Stelmach & the cabinet II establish a University Of Alberta Scholarship Fund in Gary's name. Then II announce it by video to the Shaw Centre Hall A Service, touching.

Scoliosis A Nightmare IV A Teen IV Anyone

June XXIInd, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Hopefully kids her age are cheering her on. Having scoliosis myself as a youngster (which cut back my athletic abilities) I strongly support Edmonton student Flory Saslavsky's decision to have spinal straightening surgery with titanium rods implanted in her back. I hope she makes a full recovery & has a great life.

I had the electrocharge therapy on my back IV three years through the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (attached to the Royal Alexandra Hospital) to prevent my spine from getting worse. It worked and was great as the position of my curvature didn't allow IV surgery.

So kids of all ages cheer on Flory when she undergoes surgery on Wednesday. She seems like a great young lady who with successful surgery will contribute greatly to society. She might even serve as a scoliosis ambassador IV other kids!

I must say its great to see Midget AAA coach Rick Swan get some recognition with his Knights of Columbus Award. As important as teaching is inside a classroom situation, I would argue coaching is just as important a concept. Coach Swan is teaching healthy bodies = healthy minds. He develops his young charges into potential National Hockey League stars and motivates them. This is definitely a form of positive teaching. Retired coach Billy Moores says that coach Swan is teaching "life skills." Things like perseverance and excellence. I couldn't agree more.

So David we must tell the kids to work hard, play hard and have fun and spirited competitions under the direction of coach Swan!

Dear David:

On this the occasion of my friend Tim's XLIVth (44th) birthday in Japan, where he is an English teacher, we need II remind folks of the importance of staying in school. If a student(s) needs are not being met, they'll need a little extra motivation. Or perhaps its a case where they need II be home schooled, correspondence &/or online learning, etc. They might also fit well in more of a special needs environment, rather then a regular classroom.

The key is Tim says kids must be educated in some format, in some way. There are kids of all ages according to Tim. In Japan, some of the biggest classes are those run with seniors aged 60 & over. Which just proves you are never II old II learn.

So stay smart, stay in school kids!

The initiative shown by Father Michael Schumacher & these kids is unreal. Sad in these modern times that there has II be so much hunger & despair. Dear David:

Talk about female empowerment & having their heads screwed on straight. Serious kudos belong II Kevin Maimann of The Edmonton Examiner IV highlighting the people skills and distinct teaching abilities of U of A ringette players Aissa Liska & Kyla Pronovost. Their solid efforts in teaching ringette to Baturyn School students and other schools are awesome.

Being in great shape & giving so much effort shows that they are talented athletes & youth motivators. This takes quite a bit of effort for such busy University students. Ringette appears II be about inclusiveness IV all. That is truly a great mindset to have. I cannot believe the excellent efforts of Pat Zeenuk, Lynette Thomson & the Castledowns Recreational Society tagging on student help from St. Lucy School to arrange school supplies and toys was also brilliant. Kids can make all the difference and I have II compliment Mrs. Nancy Rempel for bringing attention to this matter.

The kids in the Philipines obviously really needed the playground supplies & little emotional & educational support.Isn't that what caring is all about: giving to the maximum II help others when they are down? Then II go down themselves as Edmontonian boosters II install the equipment in the Filipino Park themselves, I mean that's both class & style.

Dear David:

I see that your new education document talks about collaboration & inclusiveness but gives zero new funding. Pardon me for saying so David, but it looks like an administrative whitewash. Without cold, hard cash David there will be trouble in Education. Yes I knw Teddy Morton increased the budget a quarter billion in his budget statement. But no offense, that's just chicken feed.

Frankly David, go back to the drawing board. Special needs kids need more hands on face II face time, not less.

What a great initiative by Miss Sue Mah & past and present Rio Terrace Elementary students to unearth a time capsule buried in 1980 (MCMLXXX.) As I have said beIV in entries, we can't learn about the future without first exploring the past. How great it must have been for Dr. Dave Hoshizaki who is a dad now to show his daughters (also Rio Terrace students & my mom June, a former teacher there) the capsule & artifacts he had a hand in burying.

Let us hope he next retrieval ceremony at the school in 2030 (MMXXX) is just as successful!

Dear David:

What a brilliant move by the University of Alberta to reappoint Fern Smart as their Dean of Education. She has won many awards and skillfully filled in at lower administrative levels. She is especially well known IV her work as Vice-Dean in promoting aboriginal educational rights. She has doubled faculty & research grants to her department to over 32 million $ by networking. This is stellar to say the least.

I certainly wish her much success in steering the Education Department through these tough economic times in her second term of office.

Killarney Junior High School A Raging Success

Dear David:

Its really groundbreaking what is going on at Killarney Junior High School. There seems II be a high level of tolerance between Muslims & Christians as well as other interfaith groups. Not just because of the excellent Principal, Dave Devin & his adroit staff, but the students themselves. Their is a strong personal bond between them all & there are zero color barriers.

This is why Edmonton Public Schools should look at merging some of their school buildings with Jews, Muslims, Mormons, Hindus, whomever to save on space & adminisrative costs. If ethnic groups can mix well at Killarney, they can mix well at other schools.

Dear David:

It seems to me that if the Paul Band First Nation's want true accountability, all Federal funds IV their educational needs should be frozen immediately. For at least the time it takes them to graduate their students at a reasonably cognizant level. 65% reading at a Grade 2 level while in High School, that is quite frankly David appalling, to say the least.

Besides why shold native tribes get Federal educational funding for non-post secondary institutions when school districts across the Province are suffering from severe budget cutbacks & deficits? There should be equal funding levels for all. These non native districts get no Federal funds, its seems there is a funding issue of discrimination & a lack of fiscal accountability by the school Principal & members of the Paul Band including its Chief, Daniel Paul.

Dear David:

A very good column by the Edmonton Journal's Paula Simons on Page B1 on June XVth, MMX. It really does seem rather shameful that Premier Edward Michael & the Province are stuffing our artifacts & treasures away in stuffy warehouses. Seems to me that in order to increase aboriginal pride and cultural pride as a whole, the Province & the School Board should enter a joint sharing revenue agreement & stick the artifacts in the halls and rooms of closing schools which will bring them back to life, as satellite museums of the Royal Alberta Museum.

The increased revenues could then be plowed back into the neighbouring communities for hot meal & inoculation programs. This would be extremely helpful to the children who have lost their inner city schools. We cannot learn definitively about the future unless we adequately explore our past.

Happy Birthday II My Cousin Sandy,

Dear David:

The way I analyze this document, it appears you are not setting aside enough resources IV disabled students. Its almost as if a forced integration of disabled students into classrooms is helping. I categorically & vociferously disagree with this decision. All disabled students learn at different paces. If they are brought fully into regular class settings, the non-disabled students will suffer from a lack of teacher attention.

To me it not about inclusiveness or exclusiveness. But if a wheelchair bound child is scared II IV instance be around non-disabled folks, would it not make sense to tutor them at home? Either in person &/or in correspondence/online sessions?

June XIVth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

What a distinct honour & privilege I have had here at the Greater St. Albert Catholic (Public) Board Offices tonight David. I gave a presentation & showed my II High School Diplomas & told them of my achievement in getting 200 High School Credits. Then I mentioned II them that II other St. Albert Catholic High students will be passing me & how I was honoured to have gotten there in the same city.

They were welcoming & enthusiastic. Peppering me with lots of questions to see if they could stump me. A lovely coffee was served and I received a nice applause. At the Board's insistence I stayed IV XX minutes of the meeting & several Trustees remarked at how greatful it was II see me so keen about education.

BeIV this I attended an interesting soiree on your approach IV Alberta Education's future. It was very enlightening but as I haven't read the document in full or even a summation I can't formulate its overall effect.

Delighted I Am Sure,

Dear David:

Its so blatantly obvious that the teachers are overpaid & also get too much vacation time for the hours they put in. When the pension fund liability of 2 billion $ was paid off, the government should have insisted on a wage freeze for two years. Then they should have only agreed to at par or just below par wage increases. I work part time at much harder labour jobs then teachers and get a medical pension. But I fought going on it but was ordered on it. I haven't had an increase in two years. In fact, I can only earn $400.00 a month supplemental tax free & then after this I must hand back governments pension cash, 50 cents on the buck. I work and go hard & constantly get shafted by Alberta Seniors & Community Supports.

Seems II me the Alberta Teachers Association needs to clam up & be greatful. If they weren't so greedy, the School Boards wouldn't be in such a crisis that there are layoffs of teachers. Of course your chronic underfunding doesn't help either. There are billions in infrastructure needs & yet new schools are opening in the suburbs for rich kids. This of course is a the expense of the inner city kids who are losing their hot lunch programs as well, even through quality providers like E4C Church Corporation.

Rory

Dear David:

The Boyle Street Community Services Program that works in tandem with the Sunchild Distance or E-Learning appears II be a wonderful thing. The code named "Water Wings" program appears so successful because it tailors its approach to custom fit each individual student. If you do not believe me, just ask student Duane Gambler. He is staying sober & is not judged IV his past alcoholic addictions. The school is so great in its approach, its trying to become a year round facility, I wish them much success.

Clearly a second story of aboriginal success is the Ben Calf Rope Program under the fine tutelage of Richard Letendre at NorQuest College. This program, which consists of many aboriginal pride & basic functioning courses also has a highly respected & quantified high school component courses which consist of: Aboriginal Studies 10, 20, & 30 (X, XX, XXX.) The program has run successfully for many years, lets hope it continues.

June XIIth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I find it quite funny that City of Edmonton Councillors & others seemed shellshocked by the news that there will be a huge overage of students come fall class season. Do they not understand that Edmontonians do love public transit? I mean we have the second highest per capita in North America number of visits to our public library system (on a daily basis.) With only New York City Proper beating us.

Its not just the southern line by the University of Alberta that will be affected. It will also be the line north towards NAIT, feeding off of Grant MacEwan. Sattelite campus colleges off of the beat & path such as Norquest & Concordia will also see a high level of students. When the western line is completed, schools from Kindergarten right through to the Jasper Place Grant MacEwan Arts Complex Campus will be inundated with the LRT students from Edmonton & surrounding area who may never have ventured out west before. Or at least had a harder time getting to & from their destination on a standardized diesel engine powered regular bus.

Sincerely,

Rory

If the E4C Church Corporation needs funds II keep food in the bellies of students, they couldn't do anything better then going to other religious groups. This is true in particular because of their battle to reconfigure the Lessard Mall property into an Islamic school & community centre.

I certainly wish them much success with their event. Have they ever thought of putting food bins IV inner city schools in libraries? This foodstuff duplication would do wonders IV the kid healthy caloric intake & metabolism levels. Plus it wouldn't cost a cent as the space is already there.

While I certainly never endorse knife fighting or stabbing in school grounds in any way, form, or manner: I can unequivocably understand it to a degree. Especially in cases of self-defense. Or perhaps an emotional reaction. To perhaps say a dating situation gone bad or in protection of someone. What the students from Archbishop O'Leary High School need II do is settle their differences in productive combat situations. Where they can blow off a little steam. But at the same time no get really hurt. Say at Gold's Gym or an inner city gym. The kids could instead box or wrestle wth protective gear on. In this way, they can still fight constructively. But while wearing protective gear & with the further incentive that each side would have a statiscally equal chance of winning. Hurting is always stupid. I always say, try & negotiate through peace & understanding. Perhaps in the format suggested by the Dalai Lama & the late Mahatma Gandhi.

Are U Freakin Kidding Me, The University Of Alberta Rebranding In A Recession

June VIIIth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

What in the hell is wrong with University D'Alberta President Indira Samarasekera? Pissing away untold millions on a rebranding of the classic University of Alberta Seal & monikers in the middle of a recession! This is like saying former saying Office of the Premier Communications Staffer Roxanna Benoit was even 1/2 "competent" in toilet flushing what 38.5 million Canadian dollars down the drain putting up a new Alberta Government Seal with the Irish or Scottish coastline in the background & believe it or not, she has a degree! Plus they gave her a nice performance bonus for this staggering stupidity, why? The old seal was awesome, it was serviceable.

The University can't meet its contractual/legal obligations because your counterpart at Advanced Education, Minister & Deputy Premier Doug Horner is not doing his job. Budgets are being slashed, students are being screwed royally with inflation raising tuition increases that are well above the national norm, staff are being cut & there are many forced retirements just to save a few bucks. There are many places in the building where infrastructure is in bad shape, just look at the 40 year old couches in the cafeteria by the Myer Horowitz Theatre.

Leave the old seal in place! Its just an excuse for the President to keep her extremely bloated salary!

Old School,

Rory

Dear David:

What an awful tragedy this is that the 21 month old child had to die! It behooves me II say that this child would obviously be better of in the custody of his grandparents, especially if they were to assume all fiduciary & legal responsibilities ( and they were.)

While I am sure that the sovereign State of Oregon & its Child's Services did what they could II a degree. They are obviously overwhelmed & the child died as a result. I love grandparents & would trust my mother June & my father Joe with their grandkids any day. The wisdom & knowledge that a grandparent can impart to his child's progeny are beyond valuable.

Plus grandparents can put their grandkid charges in the right state of mind to get a great start & succeed as students in our Alberta Education system.

Dear David:

As we remember our Canadian & Albertan World War II heroes this Sunday. Let us emphasize II Alberta students that their sacrifice & the sacrifices of all Albertan troops must never be forgotten. D-Day wasn't just a day, it was a movement that brought peace & tranquility to the European Combat Theatre. The Marshall Plan ensured there would be no bitterness from the vestiges of the Germans bitter loss & subjugation in World War I which was felt strongly all the way from Kaiser Wilhem II, right down to street fighters such as Corporal Adolf Hitler.

The Canadians were especially heroic that day & on D-Day plus days. This led to special combat missions and an initial bigger take of land back from the Germans then any other battle theatre group. Albertans made the ultimate sacrifice, just as they are doing in Afghan Combat Theatre situations today. Be sure to emphasize this in Social Studies classes David!

Sector Review At Ross Sheppard High School

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin., Ward A, Edmonton Public School Trustee Candidate, Woodcroft (Westmount) Public Library Terminal #XV, Edmonton, Alberta

June Vth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I just attended the West-Central Plenary Session for Edmonton Public Schools at Ross Sheppard High School. I left the meeting realizing that governments are in a tight spot & that both the old Public Board & the newly elected Board to be sworn in on October XIXth, MMX will be damned if they do & don't. The prospectus I see from you that Alberta Education is taking even more taxing & special powers away from the Trustees. Really not advisable when I & many others have suggested II you in emails and by face that you give Trustees their power back. If you think the Alberta Health Services Superboard under your buddy Health Minister Gene Zwozdesky is even doing a subpar job, you are dreaming in technicolor.

I. When schools die, a community dies. That sense of community is being robbed not just in Edmonton Puiblic, but in districts all over the Province where you are failing to meet infrastructure & child needs. Forcing Chairman Don Fleming & other Boards to dig into regular reserves, emergency funds, and in certain circumstances take on bank loans and other debts just to keep their schools at an even keel with the newer (& richer) suburbia schools.

II. Parents are dreading the fight with one another because if one school closes & its the school of their best friend & neighbour, then family, friendships and trust bonds get destroyed. Plus the parents know that they'll eventually have their school on the chopping block again when funds are cut. They'll have to then then have II dig even deeper & fight harder II save that school. Which might all be for naught as budgets must be met.

III. Trustees have zero power. I have noticed this since time immemorial when Halvar C. Jonson took away Trustee taxing power & Lyle Oberg made it so plebiscites could only take place in election years II raise extra contingency funds. Well this makes zero sense. It means that the Board who initiated the fundraiser plebiscite can't get a chance II show it can spend the extra dollars wisely. It falls to the new board. This is not only unjust, its quite frankly democracy derailed!

IV. Truck kids into older schools by bus. Why build new schools when the facility's in place just need standardized structural repairs? And then are serviceable as solid infrastructure for another 50-100 plus years. Arguably, retaining walls and materials in older schools are built with much sturdier & longer lasting materials. Lets take advantage of that diligent construction David!

The children of suburbia are not the only future. There are poorer, immigrant family's and family's who live in the outskirts who have a strong faith in the system. Seems to me that if all Edmonton Public & Edmonton Catholic Schools were converted into multi use facility's in which Muslim's, Hindu's, Jews or any group could join, a lot less schools would have to close.

Adroit,

Rory

Dear David:

Except for a break between 5-6pm for a supper break, I went hard IV the Tim Horton's Children's Foundation. I worked from 5am-5pm & then from 6pm-11pm. So I worked 17 hours IV the kids this year. Breaking my record of 16 last year. And I am not even a Tim Hortons employee.

I worked at locations throughout the entire city as a volunteer. As a former Timmy's staffer I was allowed II make sandwiches & work the till. It was a great time. I was given great caffeine beverages to keep me going. Its an honour II give of my time to such a great charitable endeavour once a year. Might I recommend people donate their loose change and bills to the kids of Tim Hortons Children's Camps on Camp Day, but year round as well.

Tim Horton's is a great employer and I was honoured II serve them in II contract positions totaling 2.5 years. The owners, management & my fellow staff members were all par excellence at every juncture. Serving the kids first one day a year with beverage sales, that's marvelous! Helping kids get a yearly camp break thats sublime! May we continue II break all fundraising records!

Graciously,

Dear David:

I am in total agreement with the host of "The Late Late Show", Mr. Craig Ferguson on the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) & owned by Worldwide Pants Incorporated, David Letterman's production firm. He has stated on several tour performances here on stage at the Winspear Centre that the Library was built to look like a 1950's medium security prison. He has actually gone onto repeat these allegations in his Scottish Soliloquy monologues right during his broadcast from CBS Television City in the Los Angeles, California studios.

It is my belief that what should be done is II tear the entire structure down & do what they did in Salt Lake City, Utah. Make it more family friendly. While the branch is being completely rebuilt, the satellite banches are then given more dollars to increase their resource availability & number of hours they can then open. As mentioned for example by a Mr. Garth D. Izzard in his story of the attempt assaults that occured on him at the Stanley A. Milner Branch, Edmonton Journal's Letters Page, Saturday, May XVth MMX.

Lets make he downtown library a showplace for all peoples. It should look & feel like any modern suburbia branch. Happy, healthy & invigorating in spirit IV students of all ages to garner new ideas and bulk up their knowledge skills exponentially.

Happy Children's Day David,

Rory
