Dear Dave:

Bringing out my "A-Game" today, I say that it would be great if students just going back to school this week could occasionally student plan & teach a course for 1 or 2 classes. Not outright alone but with a teacher to guide them, sort of a team teaching effort, thus giving them extra confidence!

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

I want to congratulate radio host Mrs. Danielle Smith-Moretta on doing her "homework" ahead of time on that very important topic: HOMEWORK! Its a constant struggle as students return to class for the fall & thus on Danny's radio show she had an expert on yesterday explaining the situation. Whereas sometimes there isn't enough homework being sent home, & sometimes it can serve to become all-consuming at home: thus destroying a student(s) home life & making things harder for their family too. A balance must be struck in terms of amounts of homework given & whether the student(s) should get homework breaks that could in fact let them participate to a greater extent in family activities! A mother of canine children, Danny has to choose like any other parent which school setting is best for them!

An Editor's Note: Danny agrees with me vociferously that her husband David is more trouble than their dogs. Just like most men, am I right ladies?!

August XXVth, MMXVI

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

We round out New York today with campaigning Congressman Chris Collins in a relaxed chat with students on glory & restoring a positive vision to America. Something his fellow New York Candidate for the Presidency, Mr. Donald Trump seems to favour, which is why Chris endorsed him, one of very few Republicans to do so. Its about positioning himself for reelection & Chris sees enough "anti-establishment" figures in his riding so he realizes endorsing "The Trumpster" might get him reelected.

"The United States of America will reclaim its past glory as the Land of Opportunity, restoring the promise of the American Dream for our children & grandchildren."

Selfie-Employment

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin., #6, 14504-108 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T5N 1G8

August XXIVth, MMXVI

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

My neighbour's daughter couldn't find much work this summer so she & some of the neighbourhood kids started their own car washing business complete with a lemonade and cookies stand! Imagine, kids coming up with this idea on their own. So students have to look "outside the box" as this economy doesn't necessarily allow for the government or private industry to help them land student jobs. When all else fails, student self-employment is definitely another option as Finance Minister Joe Ceci is a hopeless basketcase!

Dear Dave:

We have Cuban born Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida explaining "the immigrant experience" on the campaign trail in a speech to newly sworn in Floridians. Proactive Police Presence Paramount Pictures Corporation (TM)

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin., 15902-100A Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T5P 0L8

August XXIInd, MMXVI

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

Besides the option of a mobile Edmonton Police Service (EPS) command centre in say a donated rv or trailer that would sit on the gravel driveway year round right in the heart of The Ice District, there is the option of reactivating the old Paramount (TM) Theatre on palatial Jasper Avenue as a storefront police station with plenty of lighting. The Edmonton Fire Department (EFD) Officer who rents the space could hardly object as he is helping fellow emergency responders Dave & is only in the building what 6-8 weeks a year. As a result, a Jasper Ave. station could serve as a base full time and be less than 4 blocks away thus housing officers & police equipment around the clock every day of the calendar year. This will allow matters from Mr. Katz's Ice District as well as surrounding venues to be dealt with quickly & efficiently. Thus providing confidence to students & their families that they'll be safe downtown while attending events such as Edmonton Oilers games & other festivals! Maybe Daryl could provide say $300,000.00 a year towards this venture from his parking revenue as he's not exactly starving!

Parasailing,

Dear Dave:

A psychologist by vocation, Congresswoman Judy Chu of California gets in a remark on the campaign trail about the "psychology" of just how smart seniors are & how their votes can be most invaluable. A great tip for students here in Alberta looking to lower the voting age to XVI (16.)

August XXth, MMXVI

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

Economics students take note, Congressman Michael C. Burgess of Texas is right on the money with his quote above. What with all the stupid Blatchford Field development delays, it just goes to show the idiocy of having shut down the City Centre Airport just north of downtown Edmonton & the rather low intelligence levels of Plan Edmonton officials! That airport was a strength & not a weakness. We should have kept it as people are suffering because of its loss, not just because of air transport issues, but a much poorer response times for flights with people with medical issues not being able to land there anymore! Since the development is a year or more behind, the businesses there could have stayed where they were & not had to relocate! Texans are lucky to have Mike on this file for families!

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA

Dear Dave:

Why when letters are sent to periodicals are there not a greater number of student submissions? I ask because students got a hearing on lowering the voting age to XVI (16) before Edmonton City Council which is quite a remarkable achievement. I don't agree or disagree with that decision, but it would be great to have a day or two of strictly letters from students & then a corresponding day or two of those people opposed to this motion.

August XVIIth, MMXVI

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA
Minister of Education,
New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

With my Aspergers Syndrome or "high-functioning" autism, I admit I am of course extremely annoying at times. But, even I know when to be quiet & that for instance is here in the Public Library. But these damn kids here, you almost have to babysit them, frankly the staff are busy & don't have time to do so & as the library has just opened & they are heading into a quiet study room which they haven't booked with their game consoles & are constantly having to be tossed out by the people in there studying quietly. Perhaps they should do their gaming in the childrens section or at home. I also despise it when kids tie up all the computers in a branch with their stupid games, thus causing library patrons who need computers for study &/or research purposes to not be able to have any computer access. Note: its great that kids are into games but many can cause them to get violent & not know the difference between reality & fantasy!

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

Strictly speaking from the standpoint of being a Grant MacEwan College & Athabasca University business graduate, has Horse Racing Alberta & Northlands ever looked into the possibility of the following?

A. Converting Northlands Coliseum into a year-round indoor horse track? Arguably, this would save several hundred jobs in the service area that will not leave Edmonton. Thus, Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson & City Council wouldn't face any tax loss.

B. It would go a long way to paying down a portion of Northlands loans outstanding to City coffers.

C. The facility is already built & the bottom say 6-8 rows could be ripped out to make way for stables & Northlands racing staff & thus accommodate a track.

D. Mr. Daryl Katz & Rogers Place staff haven't expressed any interest in running such horse racing events, so an indoor track inside Northlands Coliseum would definitely not be a direct competitor per se.

To Test Or Not To Test

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin., #6, 14504-108 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T5N 1G8

August XIIth, MMXVI

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

I find it interesting that some people like standardized testing & some people feel it is not a necessary tool for students to learn with. What would be great is if adults were given the opportunity, even seniors who have more time on their hands to take these tests. Give them a decent honorarium, a hot meal, & cover their parking &/or transport costs. In this way, they can evaluate the tests in a "real-time/in classroom" setting, such as in empty classrooms of underused schools that could be reactivated for such a purpose. These adult testers who arguably took the tests as students themselves could then give a first hand account of their feelings & suggest improvements.

Test Best,

Terrible Service

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin.
15902-100A Avenue
Edmonton, Alberta T5P 0L8

August XIth, MMXVI

Hon. Dave Eggen, B. Ed., MLA
Minister of Education,
New Democratic, Edmonton-Calder

Dear Dave:

When I brought my neighbour & her son over to the provincial employment centre earlier this morning to help them get staff to talk to them about a provincial child subsidy, I was stunned at how poor the place is being run!

I. Half the computers don't have working printers & this has been this way for four months. People are getting more & more desperate & the line ups to use machines & see workers much longer. So long in fact that people give up waiting & go starve rather than waste their time for employees that don't have any idea how to do their jobs beyond the paper shuffling.  Plus there are two security guards instead of one now as the economy is getting so desperate, people are more apt to do violent things such as robbery &/or assault to one another at the centre. The look on the faces of families who cannot afford to feed their kids is sad.

II. Two of three fax machines are completely broken & have been that way for a year. This adds great stress to employers wanting hard copies rather than emails of resumes.

III. The land lines are constantly cutting in & out.

IV. There are no longer scissors, rulers, tape, & glue being handed out to assist people making up documents.

V. Most of the staff are beyond useless & many full-time staff were replaced with part-timers who cannot even speak English.

VI. And most of the Syrian refugees get jobs right away when they land in Alberta, thus displacing thousands of Albertans, that's awful!

Frankly Dave it seems to me that the Province Of Alberta can do better in meeting the employment needs of its citizens, a lot better!

Employment Stress,

Rory

What with America & Canada divided so politically & bitterly in this Presidential Election Cycle, this makes great sense for her honour to speak on.

"I've led a school whose faculty & students examine & debate every aspect of our law & legal system. And what I've learned most is that no one has a monopoly on truth or wisdom. I've learn that we make progress by listening to each other, across every apparent political or ideological divide."
