Bad Teacher

May XXXIst, MMXI

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Recognizing that the movie "Bad Teacher" with the lovely actress Cameron Diaz playing the role of a slutty teacher is just acting doesn't make the movie right. When you glamourize & sexualize teachers in on screen roles such as Academy Award (TM) Winner Gwyneth Paltrow in her turn on Fox Television's "Glee" as a Sexual Education Instructor & Diaz, you are downgrading most other teachers. Most teachers are hard working & honest, who are just there in the classroom II teach, nurture students to mature & in turn learn from them. Quite frankly I am disgusted & turned off by the whole premise of the movie.

Teachers Unite Against Uncalled IV Stereotyping,

Dear David:

The Holyrood School Council was very adept bringing a peaceful protest right II the doorsteps of where you work at the Alberta Legislature. These educational funding cutbacks are beyond ridiculous in a province as rich as ours. Giving cash II Slave Lake fire victims & then turning around II take from children (including the developmentally disabled) is not ethical. Its like robbing Peter II pay Paul.

What can be said of poor XVIII year old Ottawa Mother Teresa Catholic High School Student Eric Leighton? This fine young man was just learning how II build things (barbecues in this instance) with his hands in his shop & enjoying his life & the learning process. An oil drum that once carried harmful chemicals gave off vapours and then exploded, killing Eric & injuring his classmates & his intructor. At the Edmonton Public School Board Meeting last night, I learned that the Evansdale Elementary School here in Edmonton is the first school in Alberta officially recognized as a supporter of human rights by the United Nations. Now what can be said about that except its a real accomplishment, or feather in their cap.

Plus the school is known IV being quite a big supporter of multiculturalism & holds Multiculturalism Days wherein many ethnic dishes that represent the makeup of this great socioeconomic fabric that is the Dominion of Canada are served. Dear David:

Here's avery positive development sir. At the Lois Hole Branch EPL "Mommy & Me" Exercise Class, we have mom's carrying their tots in little carriers that allow the mom's II exercise. What's exciting about is that their child gets II bond with them & experience the excitement & stimulation of the brain caused by movement. This will give them a great start in life & educate them that its healthy II explore & move around.

What's truly great is that there were three dad's with baby's strapped around them in the class. So no sexual barriers of female discrimination against males. Sure women still perform most of the child care in relationships, but its great II see males bonding with their kids & getting exercise as well. This can only be beneficial to them, giving them time with their child(ren) that they might not normally get b/c they are working (especially helpful in situations where they might be raising their kid(s) as a single father.)

Dear David:

Sheila Pratt did a fine Sunday featurette on Edmonton Public School Board Chairman & Ward D Trustee David Colburn. Not to mention the great remarks about his "forward thinking" colleagues at EPSB as well. What impressed me most was the focus on anti-bullying & anti sexual discrimation school rules being put in at meetings so those who are gay, bi-sexual, & transgender are treated with total equality. This set of governance rules is now being adopted in British Columbia & other provinces, with Edmonton Public being the template.

Edmonton Public also put a II year moratorium on closing older schools in older neighborhoods. This decision by Trustee Colburn & his other VIII colleagues impressed me greatly as he is showing that family's who live in older neighborhoods are just as important as important as family's who occupy newer neighborhoods & subdivisions. So there may be economic strife IV some family's, but this Board is treating all family's equally, so that their kids have an equal educational opportunity in life.

Sheila Pratt of the Edmonton Journal tied these points & others together sublimely. Journalism at its best I'd say! Nay I'd insist!

Dear David:

MDC (1600) Junior High kids from Grades VI & VIII showcased a real talent for science, innovation, & invention last week. This all occurred at the Telus Plaza in a display of the inventions in palatial downtown Edmonton. The inventions created showcased just how smart the generations of future Albertans are. From velcro components in pants & attached to underwear & pants. It prevents underwear from riding up during sports related activities, all the way to making edible rice paper muffin cups that prevent the paper ones from being thrown out after eating your muffin itself: it really was a remarkable day.

Kids showcasing their inventions learned how II properly protect their property intellectually & copyright it so they can make money in the future on it. Inventing gives these students skills in math, scient, art (such as design & drafting.) Another kid invented a bra for female students that had a pocket IV their cellphones, this storage area is great IV female students as it frees up pocket space in their other clothes, plus gives them easy access to their cell's in an emergency.

Plus its healthy II encourage the students to pick up artistic talents, in this way by seeing their art up from, they are artistically encouraged & nurtured!

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

Can you believe how screwed up the judicial system is in Quebec? Some retarded judge in la belle province orders a mother & father to put their two younger children inII state run daycare. Even though this is more expensive & the mother was at home teaching the kids full time. Enforced socialization David, frankly you get it, your a lawyer or "QC" by trade what this judge is doing is enforced "socialization", frankly thats bloody communism, or at least its marxist-leninism & control.

The two older kids have been forced into regular public schools II be around other kids. Well one of the kids is deaf in one ear, so is thereIV learning sign language due to a speech delay impediment. Any normal human or legal expert in other jurisdiction would say that what the mother & father are doing is right. Having the affected child learn at home would be a lot less pressure. Plus, by keeping all of her kids at home, the mother can teach them as a bonded family unit in a legal homeschool setting.

Glad I Do Not Reside In Quebec,

Dear David:

I realize that you cannot live w/o even one day of Executive Dissertations & that these entries are singlehandedly keeping you on top of your game in the Education portfolio. So alas I must truly apologize that the consecutive streak of entries, with at least one per day, every damn day of the year ended yesterday. Blogger & Blogspot went down IV maintenance late Wednesday night & came back online Friday. So there was no way I could get II a Thursday entry.

Anyways the Liberal MLA's IV Edmonton Goldbar & Lethbridge-East ought II be congratulated by Alberta students IV holding your feet II the fire on education cutbacks & the need II restore funding as soon as alternative cashflows can be found. Hugh Macdonald's question asking IV more funding IV a certain sector division. Then the follow up by Bridget Pastoor with her petitions & tabling of motions by Albertans who were upset by the education sector cutbacks ought to be applauded. Its nice II see that even with the tributes to the retiring Liberal Leader David Swann & Edward Michael as Premier (& Tory Leader), these hard working MLA's & you had your standard query & answer session on the Assembly's last day. This shows that they & you are working hard II find solutions IV our students. As well as that debate is healthy in the chamber.

End Game,

Nederlandse Kinderen A Real Dutch Treat

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Here's a nice little tidbit from my second homeland of the Netherlands. Crown Princess Maxima, wife of future King (Koning in Dutch & current Crown Prince) Willem-Alexander has done something quite extraordinary. She & her husband have taken Euros out of their own pockets & the Crown Princess has started a drive to rid lice from schoolchildren's hair in Dutch schools. Even travelling the width & breadth of the country to physically wash some of the children's scalps back to healthiness herself. Talk about a wonderful future Dutch Queen & an outstanding effort at a public health initiative in schools.

Tot Ziens,

Dear David:

On the "Assignment: America" section of the CBS Evening News last night, there was a rather unique piece by reporter Steve Hartman from Millville, New Jersey. A single father Jim Brozina & his daughter, Alice Ozma kept up what he called the streak for what IX straight years. As a librarian by trade, he plotted out an idea to get his daughter reading, from storybooks to Shakespeare & everything in between, he read to his daughter & she read back II him IV at least XV minutes a night, every day of the year, from Grade IV right up to & including the first day she went to college & he dropped her off. Now she has written a book of those experiences in reading & can read that book to him, he must be so proud as the student has become the teacher!

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

Daniel Haines is an amazing senior. Illterate until adulthood, he was ashamed & constantly coming up with ways II hide his deficiency. He even became so depressed at points that he battled booze & suicidal thoughts rather than admit his trouble. So he sought out Project Adult Literacy (PALS) with help in learning reading skills. So in otherwords, he became an adult student & was matched with a volunteer tutor named Kate Hume. Kate didn't judge him, she just found books that interested Danny & also helped him garner writing skills. Truly a match made in heaven!

Danny is still tutored II this day & is no longer ashamed of needing a little help. Age LXIII (63) now, Danny is such a rock star at being a continuing literary student, that he mentors others in the PALS Students IV Students Literacy Program & sits on the Board of Directors IV Literacy Alberta. Danny says "its never too late to learn, you're not alone, & don't be afraid to try."

Ben Gelinas Respects His Mother

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin., #203, 8912-156 Street, Edmonton, Alberta T5R 5Z2

May VIIIth, MMXI

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Here's a great story of respect. Edmonton Journal writer Ben Gelinas respects his mother greatly. He even put up with a move II Vegreville in May as a child, near the end of the school year b/c his mother had remarried & so he went off to live with her & his stepfather. He may not have liked doing so, but he put up with his trials & tribulations b/c he as a student knew that even though life changes can be hard, his mother will always be his mother & its very important II honour & respect her. Even if that means you don't like your stepdad, you put up with him & make the best of things b/c he makes your mother happy. Ben did exactly that b/c he knew that by being a strong student & engaging young man, he'd be better off in life as an adult in relation to his own wife & kids. Plus his mother is getting married again by giving it the old college try the IIIrd time this year. I wish her & her new hubby (as well as Ben Gelinas) much success!

"Ben"tastic,

Rory

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

As we celebrate this grand occasion of Mother's Day, we must respect that every person born came from a mother. Whether they be in a home wwith a traditional mother/father setting, with a single mother, or with a home where there are two mothers, we must learn II respect just how important being a mother is. Instilling family values in students by their female (& male) & acceptance of all parental types is very important.

There are all sorts of family's, I love my mother June very much & also being a single father to my feline son James Redwing. As a continuing education student, I know that looking after your mother & parental figures is key. After all, they raised their family's, sent them to school so they could grow up strong & be productive members of society. Perhaps even doing better than their parents in life. Mothers feed us, nurture us, & guide us II becoming better persons.

Dear David:

Today from XAM-IIIPM is the Spring Market or Markt at The Dutch Canadian Centre, which is located at the Peter Lougheed Multicultural Village, just off St. Albert Trail. My father is an immigrant from the Netherlands, as is his girlfriend & they were there working a couple of booths as volunteers. There was food galore, music, Dutchies Wutchies in conversation. Beverages & apperitifs were proffered, as well as games IV the Kinderen (children) plus face painting. A great time was had by all. People such as I who knows about how great the Dutch people are were & are really proud II attend this event. I encourage family's with a Dutch heritage II join Dutch Club's in their local community. Students who want to learn about multiculturalism in Canada can learn a lot by participating in Club events. People from other races, religions, & cultures are also welcome. The Dutch like to socialize & this Market is a great networking opportunity IV family's!

Dear David:

I cannot believe how proud I am of the not I, not, II, not III, but IV, thats IV students from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec who got elected under the New Democratic Party banner in last Monday's Federal Election. Including a XIX year old, the youngest ever person elected to Canada's National Parliament. When I said I wanted in earlier entries IV students II increase their participation, I really meant it, but I never expected them II do their University & the Dominion of Canada so proud. Plus we have a XX year old single mother who is now a barmaid/hostesss winning a seat & she never actually campaigned in the riding. Sad that she didn't care II campaign, but her winning that seat will give her a chance to improve her lifestyle & that of her child, as well as picking up French oratorical skills. This will certainly help her communicate better with her constituents & make her more employable in her post MP career.

Professor Michael Ignatieff may have not won the May IInd election IV the Liberals, he even dropped them to IIIrd place. But he tried & is now signed up to be a teacher at the University of Toronto. Dear David:

I am quite sickened by "the oil business" mess going on up north. Here we have kids at the Little Buffalo School who are already economically & racially put in a lower class b/c of their aboriginal status, & on top of it, they are now not able II go II school. We need II fix this mess & fix it now. Those kids must have the air & water table atmospheres cleaned up quickly so they don't develop early onset cancers & other diseases.

Dear David:

As a person & current part time student with a medical disorder, I can truly understand compassion IV those who are sick. Here at the Lois Hole EPL is a lady named Delilah who is bi-polar & falls frequently. She was afraid II take her safety dog over II the help desk IV when she rang the bell b/c she thought kids in the library might make fun of her. I told her that she shouldn't be afraid II go ring the bell & get help. I also calmed her down so she wouldn't go manic as her human part time caregiver wasn't with her & the dog. I showed her the picture of my feline son, James Redwing from this blogsite & said that since I am a single daddy of a cat & she is a single mommy to her dog, that I would look after him. She is taking some sociology courses online b/c she is afraid II go inII classrooms & be around II many people at once. This idea was really appreciated by her & I had the dog lie down beside me at my current computer terminal so she knew it was safe & was never out of her site. This gave Delilah the confidence to go ring the bell at the help desk & ask IV assistance from a library staff member. Plus I got to give both her & her pooch hugs & kisses afterwards. Talk about an awesome reward!

Dear David:

During this "North America Occupational Safety & Health Week", I commend your colleague, the Hon. Thomas Lukaszuk, MLA for stressing the safety of young workers, in particular, young student workers. They are working hard II pay their tuition, course fees, & living expenses & by doing so are driving Alberta's economic engine of the future. To me their safety is of paramount importance. Plus Thomas is a teacher by profession so we know he cares about students on a personal level.
