Dear David:
Having just seen "Captain America: The First Avenger" (C. MMXI Marvel Entertainment Group (TM) & Marvel Comics Enterprises (TM)) I was blown away at the quality of the film. Yes the Captain is essentially a World War II propoganda figure, but students can learn a lot about the Captain & other heroes by not just reading comics, but by getting inII designing & shaping them. Say as perhaps writers, editors, illustrators, & graphic design artists. Comics actually have some great stories & riveting scripts. Think of the indellible "Classics Illustrated" comics, or the graphic images of shock & horror upon the "Death of Superman."
Comics challenge & stimulate the brain, they along with their freewheeling & iconic images have a way of making students & people in general in reading other forms of literature. Then the next challenge is to turn these images into film in order to showcase the differences between bad & good. Remember the stirring performances of Triple Academy Award (TM) Winner Jack Nicholson & Academy Award (TM) Winner, the late Heath Ledger. Both Oscar (TM) winners, both playing "The Joker", & Heath winning his role posthumously IV that very role.
Its students of film, from the Executive Producer right on down to the lowest writers & illustrators who put these stories together. So a career doing graphic design, both of stills & videos might be an exciting one for students interested in pursuing it to the full.
Defeated The Nazis & The Red Skull,
Rory
