Dear Dave:

From one Lois to another, I mean how appropriate is it that I send this post from the EPL Library Branch named after the late & great Former Lieutenant-Governor Lois Hole in order to write about our IInd Lois in the Command Chair for Her Majesty's Government The Honourable & current Lieutenant-Governor Lois Mitchell?

I had the good fortune to attend my XXXIIIrd (33rd) New Year's Levee at Government House yesterday & as always the food was rather excellent, not to mention the great people you get to meet in line. I myself consider it a very prestigious honour to attend these things as I first went to them as a young whippersnapper with my parents when I was just a baby & Lieutenant-Governor Ralph Steinhauer held the office!

I remember before that "Protocol" had been that the people meet the Provincial Representative of Her Majesty The Queen would greet average citizens upstairs in the Caucus Room so that there would be many more people able to sit & mingle in the food area downstairs once they were done meeting the Lt. Gov. & assorted dignitaries.

For many years this was changed to have the Lt. Gov. & the receiving line in the room where guests were eating & this clogged up the room greatly. Thus leaving seniors & those with mobility issues unable to sit down & thus the room could become stifling hot. This change to placing the diplomatic party back upstairs into the Caucus Room yesterday allowed for better traffic flow & let guests mingle in comfort now that the bank of chairs on the south end of the room could once again be used for sitting.

Students looking to join the Alberta Diplomatic Service should look to the Lt. Gov's Office & that of Legislative Security & Alberta Sheriffs for a textbook case in planning excellence.

Louis Lui,

Rory
