Dear David:

Excellent work by the staff and Edmonton Catholic Schools II increase safety levels at St. Pius Xth Catholic Elementary School. Presumably II prevent a repeat of the incident where a great grandmother was killed in a crosswalk while walking her great granddaughter to school. Sad that it took a death to get these measures in place, let us hope the new features prevent future tragic incidents.

Dear David:

While I agree the Calgary Public School Board has the right II cut alternate languages as compulsory courses, what they did yesterday was a step backward. Of course students with auditory & cognitive troubles should be excluded, but mandatory Francais classes from Grades VI to IX give students a leg up in society. As do optional Francais classes from Grades IV to VI. Say they get inII the civil service or the armed forces, a second language is imperative in those careers.

Precisement,

Rory

Beyond Despicable

April XXVIth, MMXI

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I was watching CBC News last night & they had a report on aboriginal social housing up north. What sickened me was the fact that in one house of less than M (1000) sq. ft., there was a family of XI living together. Grandparents, Uncles, parents, kids, grandkids. No privacy, no respect: plus the dwellings were in horrid disrepair. Plus there is a XV year waiting list to get a home, this has to be shortened substantially. Every Canadian child should be able to live in housing with a couple of decent rooms & a bath. It should be in my opinion that no matter what your race, whether aboriginal or anglo saxon, you should be able II grow up in a shelter that is warm & inviting. It should be quite frankly a right, not a priviledge!

As the CBC reporter noted, close quarters & an inability II have privacy or have proper materials to clean the house can lead II a breeding ground of sickness & death due to say family violence issues as there is no escape IV victims from their perpetrators. These aboriginal kids & their family's should have better homes II live in, so they can grow up strong, attend schools like normal kids. Then get onto a career path IV which they can use the funds to help lift themselves & their family's out of poverty!

For Shame,

Rory

Dear David:

IV the Ist time in its history, Elections Canada is looking IV workers aged XVI or XVII. I think this is a great initiative II fill shortages. Of course they could not do the XII or XIII hour required by law shifts of adult workers, but VIII hours of spending cash & a day off from school would definitely give these fine students a chance to learn about the democratic process. Plus they could definitely tag it on as a High School Social Studies Project, perhaps getting reference letters from their supervisors at the site & the Returning & Deputy Returning Officers in each Returning Office. It is my most humble opinion that youth should be encouraged II take up jobs with Elections Canada. This will get them excited & engaged about the democratic process.

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

While I a sure Charlie Sheen & the mother of his twin sons (ex-wife Brooke Mueller) are both loving parents, I do not feel that it was right to give Brooke custody of the kids over Charlie. Those II boys deserve II grow up healthy & strong & frankly neither of their parents is mentally stable. The boys should be turned over to the joint custody of the Mueller & Sheen family relatives until Charlie & Brooke can overcome their addiction problems. With of course suprvised visits with mom & dad. Failing that, the State of California should step in. If the Sheen kids are going II grow up & get a stable education, then their parents need to get treatment so that II normal home environments can be set up.

Excellent work by the Toronto Police Force in nailing & arresting the jerk who slayed that poor Chinese exchange student. IV days flat & they've got him. St. Albert, Alberta

April XXth, MMXI

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I cannot believe the gun incident in Quebec where a gentleman got inII a school with a sawed off shotgun, no proper id & held a group of kids hostage. Thank God no one was injured or died. The Quebec School & Security staffs did a great job.

Then we have in the Sovereign State of Texas a case where a Kindergarten student brings a gun into a school cafeteria, sits on it & it fires, injuring him & II other students. This just proves my case, while the long gun registry is ridiculous & needs II be abolished, we need to orchestrate much better security measures & enforcement of gun laws stopping potential crazies & lunatics from hurting our most precious resource, schoolchildren. Frankly, no parent should have II worry about their child's safety when they send them to school. Yet with this culture of violence, these incidents keep on occurring.

Sadly,

Dear David:

I do not envy the Trustees in the Battle River School Division #XXXI. Having to potentially close schools anywhere is tough IV any group. But if the Board hasn't got the enrollment, then it must be done. From what I hear, Lougheed, Phoenix Outreach, Rosalind, & Strome Schools are beyond excellent. Dear David:

English Professor Nicholas Mount knows how II engage a room of D (500) students. He knows how II draw them in. Having just won the IIIM (3M) Teaching Fellowship for excellence in University teaching & sponsored by Maclean's Magazine. One of only X teachers in the Dominion per year II receive this honour. At the University of Toronto, he regularly draws packed in crowds.

He includes his students & gets them II read literature & then learn to love it! He knows his material cold & so when he tells the students II embrace it, they know he already has. Prof. Mount is amazing as he at first didn't finish High School. But with encouragement he enrolled at the University of Victoria. So he truly knows the pressures & stresses of both non academia & starting out cold in the post-secondary world. This is why his students can respect him b/c they are what he used II be.

Plus he has Ph. D. students II help others students with tutorials. Truly innovative I'd say. Plus he chats at a pub with students as equals after each lecture. Now thats a true "pioneer" of education!

Dear David:

What a wonderful appointment as new Chief of Police that the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has made. Senior Deputy Commissioner Rod Knecht has experience working in Edmonton & Alberta, plus his Federal experience as part of Her Majesty's Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) will be a valuable asset. He can use both his Provincial & Federal contacts, as well as his Edmonton Police friends II launch a new way of bringing Law & Order to the streets of Edmonton.

Students of Alberta & Edmonton proper have II realize the importance of respecting the Police & making sure they & their family's grow up safe & strong. Police bring a sense of security & honesty to our streets. By respecting the law & being listened to as students, they will realize just how valuable the Police will be to them. Perhaps they might even consider a career in Law Enforcemement themselves. The Police always need good people to join their ranks, both as beat officers & in their civilian aide divisions.

She is setting a bad example IV students as she is clearly playing politics with a video in which the Right Honourable Member IV Calgary-Southwest just because he is Conservative, while her politics are clearly Liberal. Dear David:

If students want to truly enrich their lives, they should journey inII the past & research their genealogical history. Its truly amazing what you can learn about yourself & your modern family & how they all relate to past generations of family members. Back in the Netherlands, we had a researcher trace my dad's lineage back to MCDXX (1420.) The lives of my Dutch relatives were quite fascinating, before my family's last name was "Koopmans", it was "Broersma." Its definitely a thing students should be made aware of either on their own or as part of a Social Studies Research Project, or both.

I live on a fixed income, but even those with large financial acumens can benefit fropm this service. Have people go II the Edmonton Public Library Website to take a financial services survey. In this way, they can decide if they should reinvest their money or take a few courses on how II invest smarter. EPL Library's are considering offering in branch financial services seminars. The more people we get II sign up & take the survey, the more likely that the seminars will be offered. This set of seminars will be a great learning investment tool IV s tudents as they start on their financial savings plans IV their post-secondary years, as well as throughout their lives on their chosen career paths.

Regards,

Rory

Dear David:

I have had several comments made to me about wooden picnic tables in school yards in Edmonton. How they crack, warp, & are unsafe after awhile. Even causing kids and teachers to be injured with slivers & such. As the son of a carpenter, I know about the injuries caused by wood, especially if its not sanded correctly. Now we already have playground equipment in many school yards thats hard plastic & recyclable compounds & built IV durability due II our harsh winters. So why not mandate that all school yard picnic tables Province wide be made of these same materials & eliminate wooden picnic tables altogether?

Dear David:

It looks like the "knives in the back" are not just in the current Federal Election. Professor of English & Film Studies at the University Of Alberta, a Dr. Carolyn Sale has it right in today's Edmonton Journal. The lies & shell games that U Of A administrators are playing with salaries are atrocious. Professors are right II fight & stick it to the man. They gave up wages & benefits at previous junctures, its time they are rewarded with a fair wage. Especially when you consider the bloated wages & benefits of the Chancellor on down. I IV one feel that folks who are teaching the post-secondary students of the future deserve "the best of the best" in terms of pay & respect!

They Sure As Hell Aren't Getting It Now,

Rory
