Dear David:

Now that the Oscar (TM) fuss is over with, Academy Award (TM) Winner IV Best Actress, Miss Natalie Portman deserves extreme applause IV her efforts in promoting equal education & better life overall IV girls in the African nation of Kenya. Her volunteer & name recognition efforts need II be built upon as its cruel that in this XXIst century, girls & women are treated as subpar. Plus they have II deal with the constant threat of being raped, tortured & having II possibly get diseases from these horrid sexual abuse acts & live with the consequences of not only protecting themselves, but any children born as well.

Miss Portman went back to school to Harvard to complete her education. She knew it would cost her a ton of cash, but she knew that having an education would make her more grounded in her acting career, & in her new role as an expectant mother & ambassor of hope & goodwill. Best of luck II her & her fiance Benjamin Millipied as they get ready II be first time parents & folks should definitely look at helping Natalie in her efforts to help those disadvantaged African girls have a better life.

Rory

Dear David:

What an awesome thing IV the Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences II do. Trucking in the kids from Staten Island, New York's P.S. XXII (22) II sing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" was quite smart. Giving the kids the glory at the end of the actual Oscar (TM) telecast of the LXXXIIIrd (83rd) Academy Awards (TM) instead of the hosts, nominees & winners was inspiring. It shows that the acting industry isn't completely jaded & there are plenty of kids who will be the show business stars of the future. Plus the song was originally sang by Double Academy Award (TM) Winner Miss Judy Garland for "The Wizard Of Oz" & The Cecil B. Demille Oscar (TM) for Lifetime Achievement in Films, so it was appropriate IV the stage piece at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California.

Queen's University of Kingston, Ontario offers the Queen's Executive MBA, Cornell-Queen's Executive MBA, & Queen's Accelerated MBA. Dear David:

Here's a valuable lesson from the late night television battle zone. The man who has more Emmy's (TM) & has done more episodes than Johnny Carson, a Mr. David Michael Letterman states that more needs II be done to combat world hunger. Folks need to be educated on just how much food is wasted & how people are dying each day from an empty belly. Truly sad, especially when kids die beIV they've had chance to live a full life. Having been a patient myself of Dr. Barry Lycka & his fine staff, as well as having had relatives see him, I can truly attest II his excellence & skill as a physician. In dermatological & cosmetic endeavours, he quite frankly has no equal in Edmonton. My advice is that folks should look in on his seminar at The Mayfield Inn & Suites at 1:30pm on April IInd, MMXI. Dear David:

So let me get this straight, the German Defense Minister admits cheating on his Doctoral thesis. All he does is give up the Doctoral credentials & he gets to keep his job. Thats appalling, its outrageous. How does Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg staying in office act as a case of Ministerial proper ethical standards II German Political Science students & others who might want II be members of future German governments? He needs II resign & let another person take his place, perhaps a man or woman who earned their Ph. D. legitimately.

Dear David:

Here's some frightening news, in the Sovereign State of Texas, Austin legislators are trying II pass a bill forcing schools to not be allowed to ban guns anymore. Isn't that nuts David? We need less guns in schoolsm, remember Columbine in Colorado, or the XX person shooting in Tucson, Arizona. Hell, the City of Houston is hosting brain injured Congresswoman Gabrielle (Gabby) Giffords in one of its intensive care units as she recovers from her gunshot wounds. That alone should make Texas lawmakers want II keep the gun ban in place in schools. We need II destroy the gun culture, not allow it free reign in all education systems.

Dear David:
Writer & commentator Thomas Friedman points out that the United States Military should divert some of the combat aid over II Egyptian schools. This is a remarkably great idea as Former President Hosni Mubarak let them rot II hell, as he did a lot of Egypt's infastructure during his XXIX.V (29.5) consecutive years in office. Mubarak just stalled out for XVIII (18) days beIV he quit so he could loot & hide out the billions he stole from his fellow Egyptians. Under his so called leadership, he let the educational system in his country fall apart, as he did many other things. This is why his people were living in such abject poverty, he was trying to keep them down to kep his power. Goodbye Hosni Mubarak, hello freedom. I think Egyptian students deserve the same rights II a superb education, just like students in any other jurisdiction on planet Earth!

Dear David:

I do not know about you, but I was quite mortified II hear of the attack on a young man in Winnipeg by his fellow students. The attack was led by a young girl in a church parking lot across the street from Shaftesbury High Shool. Imagine that, I thought churches & their surrounding environs were supposed II be a place of sanctuary. Other kids cheered the attacker on, then threw cigarettes & water at the defenseless victim, then posted the attack on video Facebook so the victim could be ridiculed even more.

I feel sorry IV this boy's family, including his mother who watched the video replay & said "I was paralyzed by it." Violence & bullying of any sort at any time should never be tolerated. Its good the boy is safe now & a big shout out II Winnipeg Police.

Congrats II the Edmonton Journal's Paula Simons in realizing the educational & emotional value of musique. Her tour & column promoting the return of carillon to the Alberta Legislature was spellbinding. Also thanks II choral director Robert de Frece IV playing the new instrument & Minister of Infrastructure Ray Danyluk IV being Paula's tour guide. Music is a great art form & it certainly stimulates the mind. This carillon will help return the Legislature back to its former musical glory & make it a more stimulating environment to be in. The music will certainly be more entertaining than the actual chamber debates. What I really appreciate is that Paula & Minister Danyluk delve inII the history of the original carillon from MCMLXVII (1967), a Social Studies factoid if there ever was one.

Dear David:

Proving the old adage that you are never II old to learn, Master Cpl. Shawn Grove is learning to speak a new language, Pashto. A language of dialects & literatary orations that allow him II communicate on a daily basis with tribal Afghani's/Warlords/Citizens in the Afghan Battle Theatre. This is a superb idea as it cuts the need IV translators & gives the Afghans a sense of greater trust about the Canadian mission over there to stop terrorism as a whole.

I certainly applaud the Master Cpl. in his efforts to build bridges & make Afghans know that he respects them enough II converse with them in their first language. I cannot of course pick up other languages with my disability, but I certainly applaud the efforts of any Canadian & Allied soldiers in wanting II get II know folks on the ground. This War Theatre learning field can definitely also be handy in allowing Mstr. Cpl. Grove II gather intelligence. Not to mention the fact that he can come up with ground game adjusted battle plans for unexpected contingencies with locals. Dear David:

As I sit here on this auspicious & historic occasion, the last day of the regular Jasper Place EPL being open in this particular building, I cannot help but feel a little sad & maudlin. A touch of melancholy is natural I guess because this Branch just being 1/2 a block north from my home makes it seems like a second home.

Any blog entries that i write from the temporary location will be of course addressed with the moniker of "Satellite" in front of the words "Jasper Place." Which of course is appropriate as this Branch will return to this spot in its new building, both bigger & better than ever in what XIX (19) to XXIV (24) months scheduled construction time. Barring unforseen delays & technical troubles in hauling out the old supplies & reformatting different parts of the old building into its replacement. So there is no need II worry by students. Jasper Place Branch EPL will return stronger than ever, led by the superb Mrs. Edith Parsons & her staff of great clerks like Mr. Jeff Thiessen.

Its not just the facility, the books, the dvds, the cds, the computers & the like that make a great study atmosphere & family place to be. No its the sense of family, the people who work here & the people who come here II use the facility's & who appreciate the great efforts put on by the staff.

By having a Thom Elniski Memorial Tounament on the M.E. Lazerte Gym Floor, they are showcasing Coach Elniski's love of the game & respect IV their old High School Coach. Coach Elniski must have been so proud of the Parker boys & many of his other students as they went onto better themselves & their Coach by playing in professional basketball leagues. Truly the highest compliment anyone can pay is by getting consistently stronger in their chosen vocations, including athletic endeavours.

Quite frankly on Access Television tonight, St. Albert Catholic (Public) School Board Chair, Mr. David Caron was on message & on point. St. Albert Catholic (Public) is a great school division. Dear David:

Let me say what a great letter writer & ideas person Mr. Willy B.T. Xavier is. In today's Letters Page of the Edmonton Journal, he proposes that students of limited means & those of developmental disorders be able to live in the Former Chancellor Sandy & Mrs. McTaggart residence. This beautiful home that was so graciously donated by the McTaggart's upon their retirement to Arizona would then as Mr. Xavier states: "be lived in."

Reasonable student accomodation at an affordable rate, how novel. Plus having the students grow their own garden, what a sublimely excellent concept. Seems to me a really great thought process & I sure hope students who have trouble with a dormitory living concept are given a chance to live there!

Accomodating & Exciting,

A Christian Perspective

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Having proudly attended the West Edmonton Christian School & the Edmonton Christian High School beIV they were part of the Edmonton Public Schools System, I can truly say I had many great experiences there. I highly suggest this school as a superb learning centre with an honest focuson spirituality in everyday living. I also think that Meadowlark Christian Elementary & Millwoods Christian Schools have great lessons to teach students who want a more religious experience. Thats of course for Round 1 of my path.

St. Gabriel Storefront Catholic (Public) & Edmonton Revelation Online Catholic have also been excellent II me & many other Alberta students, & by extension: their family's. To me its not about Catholic vs Protestant or vice versa. No, its about embracing Christianity from all sides, as well as other faiths.

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I cannot believe how exciting this is David, my old stomping grounds of Lymburn are celebrating the XXVth (25th) anniversary of their Elementary School. I lived in the Lymburn community from MCMXCI (1991)- MM (2000) & really enjoyed it. The kids & neighbours were great with all of the kids telling me just how much they loved Lymburn Elementary. While I never attended the school, I was there IV community meetings and as an Election Worker in the capacity's of Poll Clerk & Information Officer. I admire that facility greatly. Sharon Filipek & Carol Emir-Ahmet deserve (along with the many staff & students past & present) a huge congratulations! See if you can attend their birthday party tomorrow David, I bet they'd love II have you!

Go To 18710-72 Avenue & Check Out The Excitement,

Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I just received a very kind note & a Canadian Flag pin from this fine Ontario Member of Parliament, Mrs. Irene Mathyssen, New Democrat, London-Fanshawe. This superb lady really gets me as she has worked with & taught other students with Aspberger's Syndrome. Now while I am not of the New Democratic Party persuasion, I can really appreciate that there is someone besides my pal Mike Lake, MP, Conservative, Edmonton-Millwoods-Beaumont fighting IV the rights of autistic kids and their family's on Parliament Hill!

Best Wishes,

Rory

Take Him To Interview Room Three

Edmonton, Alberta T5R 5Z2

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Try & get kids to not think of Parent/Teacher Interviews as stressful or berating. Also make their parents feel at ease. Whether the student is in the room or not, try & make the interview process seem relaxed. Sometimes if a student is struggling, a parent/guardian can feel that their child is under assault, &/or they have a problem in terms of their parenting skills. Both sides should feel relaxed & remember the focus is not on them, but instead on helping the child get better academically & socially.

Rory

From The Floor Of The House Of Commons

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin.
Jasper Place Public LIbrary Terminal #I
Edmonton, Alberta
February VIIth, MMXI
Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I agree with questions today in Question Period from The House Of Commons in Ottawa. Both the Opposition & Government are right in their request to increase operational controls over the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Making sure that as much money as possible that is being sent in IV use by students in developing nations by having it given directly to their teachers & teacher aides is very smart. The more money that goes II educating students, the better off their populations of students will be. They can then use that knowledge to better the lives IV the citizens of their nations. Former Prime Minister, The Right Honourable Charles Joseph Clark, P.C., C.C. deserves a lot of credit on this file, particularly during his tenure as Minister of External Affairs.

Floor Fight,

Rory

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

We need II get folks involved in keeping the University Of Alberta "New Trail" Alumni Magazine going. Both in print & online, its a rather sublime read & really cares IV the needs of not just teachers & administrators; but IV the students, both past alumni & present. A magazine like this opens up your mind to great discussion & debate. Both my mother June (an alumni) & I see the importance of keeping dialogue & channels open. The written word provides a great context & a permanency of recorded thought.

Dear David:

Take a stroll over to Meyonohk School in Mill Woods David. It offers an exciting opportunity to students of all races, religions & cultures to learn both Mandarin Chinese & English. Its not just a program IV Asian students, but a program IV all kids interested in exploring Asian-Pacific culture & the exciting influence that is the People's Republic Of China. I have a relative teaching there & he is just so excited about this wonderful land of opportunity. I also encourage students II earn Cantonese, another great Chinese language/dialect!

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I was taking my mother II a Dr's appointment at 3:10pm yesterday & we were both quite amazed at the great job the kids were doing in their crosswalk guard capacity's. These were the kids of Meadowlark Christian Elementary School at 158 Street and 92 Avenue as we were headed west in my truck. They had their brightly coloured reflective vests on and worked hard to have their hand held stop signs out straight forward at the wrist, so that vehicles from both sides (going east & west) knew to stop. These kids, their parents, the kids they are protecting, as well as the management & staff of Meadowlark Christian School must be very proud of their fine efforts!

Dear David:

In the great Alberta town of Three Hills, we have the Prairie Bible College. It seems like a great place if you are of Christian background, & a place where you can learn about the Bible & what is like II serve Christ. I'd go so far as to recommend the place II non Christians who want to learn about another rich faith group and want to see how it relates to their own.

In Christ,

Rory

A Wise Stratagem In Regards II Egypt

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Thanks David first & IVmost IV putting the students of Alberta first by not running IV the PC Alberta Leadership again. We need a good man to steer the Education Portfolio in these challenging times & you are definitely the go to guy.

Kudos have II be given II Kate Chegwin School student Bailey Close & her family & school officials IV cancelling their trip II Egypt. Yes its painful to cancel a trip that has already been planned & the trip would have been a valuable experience of learning on the ground in "real time" about a exciting civilization with a rich culture & plenty of excellent historical sites.

But safety must come first. So it has here. Its sad but there will be other trips & other chances to learn. Plus once President Hosni Mubarak leaves office, the situation on the ground will stabilize. Then an alternate travel date can be arranged.

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Now here's a man of great vision in his future. With the ironic name of Leon Almightyvoice. This poor young aboriginal man suffers from a terrible stutter. Just like Colin Firth in his portrayal of King George the VIth (6th) (a well known stutterer) in "The King's Speech." A sure Oscar (TM) contender. Well, old Leon is doing so well he is going to take Toastmasters training & will show his family & friends from the Great Province of Saskatchewan just how much he has learned. He has talked II his daughter on the phone & she is proud of him.

The late King George was the main reason in WWII we in the Western Hemisphere are not saying "Sieg Heil" & worshipping the descendants of Corporal Hitler now. His Majesty overcame his struggles to lead & command respect. I know Leon will as well. Kudos II Holly Lonheim, Leon's ISTAR Adult Clinic Coordinator as well!
