Dear Jeff:

In last night's Turner Classic Movies (TCM) tribute to the New York City borough of Brooklyn, there was a great film about being encouraging II musical students. Triple Academy Award (TM) Winner Frank Sinatra was playing an army veteran looking II break inII the musical business. He stopped by the musical class of a young lady he liked who also happened II be a musical teacher. The actress playing the role was Kathryn Grayson, noted IV her ability as an accomplished opera singer as well in real life.

The film was called "It Happened In Brooklyn" from MCMXLVII (1947), & Ms. Grayson played Anne Fielding, a music teacher. She was teaching her students how II sing an opera aria, as well as play it if they were strictly insdtrumental students. She was teaching them how II perform it at a low tempo/pace, as well as mid-tempo, & high-tempo. This of course allows the students II learn at a pace thats comfortable IV each of their individual musical ability's & also then lets them know their limitations & how they can improve. Sinatra plays Danny Webson Miller, who is romantically interested in Anne after getting out of the army & hoping to restart up his dream of having a musical career. Anne is a music school teacher who hates her job but cannot get auditions to get a foothold inII the New York City opera scene, so she settles & does her best by teaching others.

Sinatra stops by Anne's class & performed some of the aria himself. So the students get II not only learn from a superb opera singer, they get a crash course in perfect pitch & intonation from Ol' Blue Eyes himself. The Chairman of the Board also works at a music shop II sing & play live music, the students from the surrounding neighborhood come II the store & listen II him, as well as buy records. So Sinatra & his supporting cast are being encouraging of young & developing musical talent. The film also stars reliable Rat Packer Peter Lawford, Jimmy Durante, & Gloria Grahame of "Its A Wonderful Life" fame with Double Academy Award (TM) Winner Jimmy Stewart.

Mack The Knife,

Rory
