Dear Jeff:

In the film "The Gift Of Love" last night on Turner Classic Movies (TCM), Star Of The Month Academy Award (TM) Winner Lauren Bacall plays a woman who knows she has a heart defect. She is worried that her hgusband, a physicist played by Robert Stack will be lonely if she ever dies. He does find out eventually that his wife is sick as she tells him of her heart trouble. However, her character of Mrs. Julie Beck gives her husband, Dr. Bill Beck the greatest gift of all, she & her husband adopt a precocious little girl aged VIII (8) from an orphanage who has had III (3) adoption attempts already fail. Evelyn Rudie plays Hittie, the girl adopted.

Mrs. Beck wants to keep her husband grounded & know that he will be part of a safe family unit of II if she should pass away. She wants Hittie & Bill to be able to take care of one another & feel safe, happy, & best of all, not totally alone if she goes. When she does die, Dr. Beck falls apart his adoptive daughter & he try to cope, Hittie tries to help Bill remain strong IV the both of them. Eventually the stress of everything gets to the best of them & Hittie runs off depressed back to the orphanage. She falls on some rocks by the cliff the orphanage is by. Dr. Beck is miserable at home when he hears that Hittie has gone missing, he comes to the orphanage to help find her.

Whats really nice is he takes her home to raise on his own. He knows that this little girl will give him the strength & he her strength in return to recover from his wife's sudden passing. He will raise her right, put her in the best schools in order II make sure his late wife's legacy of family & caring will always be remembered!

Delightful,

Rory
