Dear Jeff:
As its August IVth (4th) today, students might question what's in a number? The number "4" or any number can have a significant meaning, & can mean something different when tied in with different numbers &/or letters &/or symbols. Examples of 4 include:
I. The "4-H Club", a worthwhile charitable organization.
II. Shouting "four" on a golf course to warn golfers ahead or behind you of an impending golf ball or dangerous object coming at them.
III. "Four score & seven years ago" in President Abraham Lincoln's (Republican-Illinois) Gettysburg Address to signify his nation's forefathers started the United States of America 87 years earlier with a score meaning XX (20) years.
IV. "4" years being the maximum single term length affixed for a President Of The United States.
V. "Vier" is "4" in Dutch, the home nation of many of my relatives.
VI. The Alberta Legislative Assembly used II sit V (5) days a week, Monday-Friday whereas now it sits IV (4) days a week, Monday-Thursday.
So B"IV" students discount numbers, they must remember that we need them, just like we need letters & symbols in order "IV" society II properly function on a daily basis,
Its All IV One & One IV All,
Rory
