Hon. Gordon Dirks, B. Ed., M. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Calgary-Elbow

Dear Gordon:

Truly one of the finest men to hold the office of Prime Minister, John N. Turner never really got a chance to take the office to new heights & lost the II elections he faced to Marty B. Mulroney as the citizenry of Canada knew that Pierre E. Trudeau had hung on to long & voters were mad at the Liberals. I was a huge Mulroney supporter but if Prime Minister Turner had won the Ist of II elections they fought wouldn't have bothered me as he is such a gentleman. As it stands at just LXXIX (79) days in office, Mr. Turner was our IInd shortest serving Prime Minister. Sad b/c he was shown great respect for his efforts in helping put the bicentennial celebrations of Sir John. A. Macdonald's birthday together, a Grit reaching across the Tory aisle!

Being a British born immigrant to Canada, Prime Minister Turner had a unique perspective on the nation as he represented three different ridings in three different provinces. As a result, he got to realize the importance of trying to get the regions II work in harmony as much as possible. He knew there would be fights over policies which would lead to compromises or "give & take" from all sides for the good of the citizenry of the Dominion including children.

"In any democracy, there is always a tug-of-war between policies to achieve equality & policies to promote excellence. I am certain that Canada can achieve both quality & excellence."

Was Not An Elected MP Or An Appointed Senator While Serving His Tenure As Prime Minister,

Rory
