Dear Jeff:

Part of police work is being able II take down accurate police reports & witness statements over the phone & transcribe them in proper shorthand until the witness can come in & make a much fuller or more "complete" statement at a later juncture. The reason shorthand is important or as Sergeant Joe Friday of the Los Angeles Police Department quite often requests: "Just the facts" is so that any & all investigating officers have a summation of points II work with & thus can actually start up a decent preliminary investigation. Teachers calling in from schools who are witnessing students beat & rob younger students have been tying up police lines since they are stuck in their schools making sure the victims get medical attention & that no further attacks occur. At the LAPD Police Headquarters at City Hall, Telephone Squad Commander Sgt. Friday explains the police process of what the cops want to do with the students to calm any fears of the teachers calling in & he tells this to his squad team to.

"What we're trying to do is head off the kids from becoming violent outside the school before they leave and start on a path of crime."

Scaring Them Straight Hey Joe?,

Rory
