September XXVIIth, MMXIV
Hon. Gordon Dirks, B. Ed., M. Ed., Progressive Conservative, No Constituency As Unelected
Dear Gordon:
As a Major-General in the United States Army bIV his succeeding to the Presidency & after becoming the civilian military Commander-In-Chief on becoming President, President Zachary Taylor was always trying to instill honesty in young people. This insistence on military integrity, honesty, & forthrightness ran the gambit from his children at home, all the way to the young soldiers he commanded in both battlefield & in civilian situations as a General & as President respectively.
"I shall pursue a straight forward course deviating neither to the right or left so that comes what may I hope my real friends will never have to blush for me, so far as truth, honesty & fair dealings are concerned."
March IVth, MDCCCXLIX (1849)-July IXth, MDCCCL (1850),
Rory
