The Longest Ballot Committee

Rory J. Koopmans, B. Admin., #6, 14504-108 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T5N 1G8

July VIth, MMXXV

Hon. Demetrios Nicolaides, B. A., M. P. S., Ph. D., ECA, MLA, Minister of Education, United Conservative, Calgary-Bow

Dear Demetrios:

I actually like the "first-past-the-post" system. I mean if  Winston Churchill, the wartime hero British PM thought it was solid, then I think we should stick with it. Still, I respect "The Longest Ballot Committee" & its right to field candidates. But, I remember the State Of California & its "Total Recall" Gubernatorial Election in MMIII where Governor Gray Davis, Democratic was recalled & replaced by actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Republican. At 135 candidates, & as an open race where more than one candidate could run under the same party banner made the ballot just too lengthy. Here is a sample from Orange County.

The Longest Ballot Committee should put one or two really strong candidates in place if they hope to get a strong showing. Such as in the current Battle River-Crowfoot byelection scenario, because invariably, a long ballot just causes voters to screw up & some will with all the confusion, marking their ballot for a candidate they didn't mean to choose.

Balloted,

Rory
