February VIIth, MMXV
Hon. Gordon Dirks, B. Ed., M. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Calgary-Elbow
Dear Gordon:
Executive Dissertations concludes its look at "The Assemblymen/women" with the member for Edmonton-Mill Crick, the Hon. Gene Zwozdesky, MLA who happens to be the Speaker of that very chamber. Gene although elected as a Progressive Conservative must have his picture in the centre to ensure neutrality & impartiality in his role as Speaker. Gene referees sporting events as a hobby in addition to being a Speaker & just like these events, he has to keep each side of the house fair & impartial & try to deal with 86 bickering personalities under the dome (a losing battle quite often as I've got cousins who are just 4 & 6 who are behaved better.) The late Premier Ralph P. Klein called it: "domus morbus" or "dome disease." Talking to students touring the Legislature, Gene explains his job.
"As Speaker you have to be impartial, you have to be fair."
Alta. Legislature Assembly Eighty-Six,
Rory
