Hon. Gordon Dirks, B. Ed., M. Ed., MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Calgary-Elbow

Dear Gordon:

An Editor's Note: It should be noted that after President Herbie Hoover's term of office, all future Presidents were to be sworn in on January XXth every IV years instead of March IVth. So Pres. Hoover was the last President to sit from March IVth to March IVth. When President Franklin Roosevelt, Democratic-New York was sworn in for the Ist time it was from March IVth, MCMXXIII (1933)-January XXth, MCMXXXVII (1937), a shortened term rather than the standard 1,461 days. This was to be fair to Pres. Hoover who had a legal right through his election to sit a full IV years. The swearing-in date was moved up because transport methods had improved & President-Elects didn't need months or weeks to travel to Washington, District Of Columbia to be sworn in any more.

Speaking on the topic of the stupidity of war & the political machinations behind it, Pres. Hoover makes a very telling point.

"Older men declare war. But it is the youth that must fight & die."

March IVth, MCMXXIX (1929)-March IVth, MCMXXIII (1933),

Rory
