XXIVth Mayor Of Edmonton William Hawrelak was an Alderman, Mayor, & even a Federal Liberal MP candidate. Definitely the most corrupt person to hold the office, William resigned in September MCMLIX after just under 8 years because he was to profit greatly from a land deal that was under negotiations with the City. That should have been a red flag there & a lifetime ban on seeking public office. But people loved William Hawrelak as he got things done. The Centennial (Main) Branch of The Edmonton Public Library (now Stanley A. Milner Branch), The Valley Zoo, Fort Edmonton Park, Queen Elizabeth Planetarium, Coronation Park, & many other things were built under William's watch this timeframe. Plus he got the Edmonton portion of the Yellowhead Trail expedited.
